4 best Costco hearing aids of 2024, according to experts

Hearing loss significantly impacts mental health and quality of life. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 1.5 billion people live with some degree of hearing loss, a number projected to rise to over 2.5 billion by 2050. (1) This condition not only hinders communication but also exacerbates feelings of social isolation, depression, and anxiety, underscoring the necessity for effective hearing solutions. (2)

Costco, a popular retail giant, has recognized the critical need for accessible hearing aid technology and offers a small range of devices to improve hearing and communication for its customers. Costco currently carries three prescription devices: Jabra Enhance Pro 20, Phillips HearLink 9040, and Rexton BiCore are available through its in-store hearing centers, while the Lexie B2 Plus is accessible online as an over-the-counter (OTC) option. If you’re considering the best hearing aids from Costco, we’ve done the research for you and have provided all the details about each product and recommendations regarding who they are best suited to.

Editor’s pick Costco hearing aids

We selected the Jabra Enhance Pro 20 as the best receiver-in-canal (RIC) model due to its exceptional digital processing capabilities and crystal-clear sound quality. Why we like Jabra Enhance Pro 20 as best receiver-in-canal

Costco’s most expensive prescription option is the Jabra Enhance Pro 20. It’s only available through Costco in-store hearing centers after a professional evaluation and hearing test. Prices start at around $1,600, but costs will vary slightly by state. The Jabra Enhance 20 is the smallest rechargeable hearing aid made by Jabra and comes in four colors.

The Jabra Enhance Pro stands out for its advanced digital processing capabilities, which deliver crystal-clear sound quality and an outstanding listening experience in various environments. This hearing aid is custom-programmed to match your personal hearing loss profile, determined with an in-store audiogram. Its combination of small size, cutting-edge technology, ease of use, and versatile features make it our choice for the best RIC hearing aid available at Costco.

All Costco prescription hearing aids come with free follow-up care (including video appointments and remote adjustments), a three-year manufacturer’s warranty, and two-year coverage for unlimited repairs and one-time replacement due to loss or damage. They also include a generous 180-day trial period, giving customers ample time to adjust to their new hearing aids and ensure they meet their needs before making a final commitment.

The Jabra Enhance Pro 20 treats mild to profound hearing loss in individuals ages 12 and up. They’re water- and sweat-resistant with an IP68 rating (submersion is not recommended, but a quick accidental drop in the sink or getting caught in the rain shouldn’t cause damage). Users can utilize the popular Jabra app to make adjustments (like switching between the five listening programs) or for live video appointments and remote adjustments with a hearing professional.

If you suffer from tinnitus, a buzzing or ringing in the ears, the Jabra app has an excellent tinnitus management program with tinnitus masking features, which offers significant relief from the negative impacts of tinnitus by “masking” the tinnitus sounds with more pleasant sounds. (3, 4

The app also allows you to locate lost devices, a surprisingly rare yet very appreciated feature. As with all prescription hearing devices from Costco, custom-made molds are available for those who cannot find a comfortable fit with the molds that come with the devices.

The Jabra Enhance Pro 20 comes with one portable charger that will fully charge the aids in three hours and provide three full on-the-go charges before needing to be charged again. The aids have about a 24-hour battery life (up to 30 hours), depending on your usage patterns—streaming drains the battery quickly.

Speaking of streaming, these devices come equipped with advanced LE Audio Bluetooth connectivity that directly streams from both Apple and Android devices (a rarity in the hearing aid world) and hands-free calls with Apple devices. Users can share audio with other LE Audio-enabled devices. (5

LE Audio allows for Auracast, an advanced broadcast audio technology designed to stream live audio to unlimited Auracast-equipped devices in public spaces like concert venues, event spaces, and transit stations. This innovation will revolutionize accessibility for hearing aid users by making information and audio more readily available in airports, railway stations, conferences, theaters, and places of worship, reducing stress and enhancing the listening experience. Auracast also simultaneously facilitates streaming in multiple languages and enables shared audio experiences in private settings, ensuring compatibility across different hearing aid brands. (6)

Why we like Lexie B2 Plus as best over-the-counter

If your hearing loss is not severe and you feel comfortable adjusting yourself, you may want to consider Costo’s OTC option, the Lexie B2 Plus. OTC hearing aids are showing as much customer satisfaction as professionally-fitted devices in studies. (7)

This model is available only online and requires no testing or professional intervention. You can receive some set-up guidance through the app, but you are, for the most part, on your own. When we called our local Costco hearing center we were told this option is only recommended for tech-savvy customers.

It will Bluetooth connect to the Lexie app but doesn’t have streaming capabilities beyond iPhone calls. It’s not compatible with Android devices. In-app adjustments include volume control and muting, treble and bass, microphone directionality, balance, environmental presets, software updates, and video chats with Lexie support.

Lexie has added an optional in-app hearing test to this model, which can customize your settings to your specific hearing needs. You can use the four pre-programmed environmental presets (noisy indoors, outdoors, music, and every day) as they are or fine-tune them to your preferences. You can also create up to 10 more customized presets.

It comes with a portable charging case but has a shorter battery life than the prescription-strength models, with up to 18 hours of use on a single charge. It is water resistant but cannot be worn in the shower, unlike the professional models in this review. It’s meant for those 18 and up with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.

What customers are saying

The Lexie B2 Plus hearing aids earn an average of 4.1 stars across 78 reviews on Amazon. Customers often highlight how easy they are to use and set up. The sound quality during conversations also earns high praise.

Amazon reviewer Robert M. finally found a good fit after several months of trying different hearing aids. They shared their experience: “These Lexie B2 Plus devices are amazing. Powered by Bose, the sound is awesome, with realistic sounds. It’s what I was expecting, and I wasn’t disappointed. When connected via Bluetooth to my iPhone, conversations are natural. I now let my wife set the TV volume because the sound is clear and understandable at a much lower setting. Lexie cautions that streaming music may not be as good as  AirPods, but I can’t tell the difference. I’m more interested in normal day-to-day hearing and phone calls. The fit is comfortable and didn’t take long to get used to. The battery life so far is long enough to last a full day and evening without going out.”

“These hearing aids are spectacular. They are so comfortable and easy to set up, and my hearing has greatly improved. I’m hearing things I haven’t heard in years. I cannot recommend these highly enough!”

Bearspater, verified Amazon customer

In a few reviews, we found comments regarding Bluetooth connectivity issues as a primary driver for frustration.

Amazon customer Steve says, “The hearing aids seem good, but the app is terrible. I spent an hour on the phone with customer service. They were no help and could not get the Bluetooth to work. They said my Android was incompatible.”

Why we like Phillips HearLink 9040 as best sound processing

The Phillips HearLink miniRITE treats mild to profound hearing loss in individuals ages 36 months and up, so it’s the only Costo option suitable for children. It features advanced AI technology that automatically adjusts in real-time and learns as you go. AI technology in hearing aids is new and increasingly helpful. (8) This model uses SoundProtect technology to automatically detect and reduce annoying background noise like wind or handling noise.

It utilizes the same advanced Bluetooth technology as the Jabra Enhance Pro, streaming directly from Apple and Android devices. The new Phillips HearLink 2 app allows for adjustments (like selecting listening programs) and a live connection with a hearing professional for remote adjustments. The app also includes a tinnitus support program.

The HearLink’s larger size means it’s not as discreet as the Jabra Enhance Pro, but it comes in six color options to match your hair and skin tone. The larger size does allow room for a telecoil.

It comes with a portable charger, which provides three full three-hour charges when fully charged. Run time is approximately 24 hours (up to 30 hours without streaming) per charge. This hearing aid has an IP68 rating, meaning it’s sweat and water-resistant enough to allow for some splashes or brief submersions.

Why we like Rexton BiCore C R-Li as best for travel

Studies show that travel is good for mental health (9), and the Rexton BiCore hearing aids are perfect for taking anywhere in the world. They come with two chargers: one you can leave plugged in by your bedside and one you can bring on the go. They take slightly longer to charge than the others in this review (four hours instead of three) and will run for up to 28 hours (24 hours if you’re streaming).

They’re also incredibly durable with their “life-proof” protections. Rexton goes beyond sweat and water resistance and makes its hearing aids heat-, UV-, vibration-, impact-, and chemical-resistant. Hair products won’t harm them, nor will dropping them on a hard floor. This may be your best option if you are very active, accident-prone, or just tough on your belongings.

As with the other apps we’ve discussed, the Rexton app allows for wireless adjustments through the device’s six listening programs or remote connections and adjustments from your hearing professional. The app also includes a tinnitus support feature with sound and notch therapy. This model comes in 10 color options and does not house a telecoil.

Pros and cons of buying hearing aids from Costco

Pro

  • Cost-effectiveness: Costco is known for offering hearing aids at a more affordable price than other retailers and hearing clinics. This affordability makes hearing aids more accessible to a broader range of people.
  • Free hearing tests and follow-up services: Costco offers free hearing tests at its in-store hearing centers conducted by licensed hearing aid specialists or audiologists. It also provides free follow-up appointments to adjust and service the hearing aids and a three-year manufacturer’s warranty plus two-year coverage for unlimited repairs and one-time replacement due to loss or damage
  • Convenience: For many, shopping for hearing aids while handling other errands at Costco is a significant plus. Costco stores with hearing centers nationwide add to this convenience. It also provides remote adjustments for all hearing aids it sells.
  • Risk-free trial period: Customers can take advantage of a generous 180-day trial period, giving them time to adapt to their new hearing aids and ensure they meet their needs before making a final commitment.

Cons

  • Membership: You must be a Costco member to purchase any of its hearing aids.
  • Limited brand and model options: While Costco offers a selection from several brands, it may not include all the latest models or the full range from each manufacturer. For example, Lexie’s offering is an older, replaced model. This limitation can restrict choices for those seeking specific features or brand preferences.
  • Potential for longer wait times: Due to the popularity of Costco’s hearing aid centers, customers might experience longer wait times for appointments for hearing tests, fittings, and follow-up services.
  • Lack of highly personalized care: Although Costco employs qualified professionals, the level of personalized care and ongoing support might not match that of private audiology practices, where services are more tailored to individual needs.
  • Insurance considerations: Costco does not accept insurance for the purchase of hearing aids.

How much do Costco hearing aids cost?

The OTC option, Lexie B2, costs $999, and the prescription models start at around $1,500. Prices vary somewhat by location; additional costs may be added when ordering custom ear molds or accessories. You must be a Costco member to buy hearing aids from the retailer and to use the complimentary services in the hearing centers. These include:

  • Product demonstrations
  • Hearing tests
  • Follow-up appointments
  • Hearing aid cleanings and checkups
  • Hearing aid adjustments

Membership fees start at $60 annually.

What to consider when shopping for Costco hearing aids

When choosing hearing aids from Costco, several factors can influence your decision. Here are key points to consider to ensure you select the best option for your needs:

  • Hearing loss severity: You may consider the OTC option for milder hearing loss. You should go to the hearing center for a professional fitting for more severe cases.
  • Budget: The OTC option costs $999. The professional models are not much more expensive, starting at around $1,500.
  • Technology features: Advanced features like AI technology, Bluetooth connectivity, and app-based adjustments can enhance your experience. Determine which features are essential for your lifestyle and hearing needs.
  • Battery life: Battery life varies among models, although all four options should last an entire day. If you need a very long-lasting performance or plan to stream a lot, you’ll want one of the prescription models.
  • Durability: If you lead an active lifestyle or work in challenging environments, consider hearing aids with high durability ratings, such as water, sweat, and impact resistance, like the Rexton.
  • Fit and comfort: All Costoco options are RIC-style, but you can order custom ear molds for the prescription models for a specialized, comfortable fit.
  • Maintenance and support: The OTC model is self-fitting, although you get some guidance through the Lexie app. The prescription models come with free follow-up care.
  • Trial period and warranty: The OTC model has a 45-day trial period and a one-year warranty. The prescription models come with a 180-day trial period, a three-year warranty, and two-year coverage for unlimited repairs and one-time replacement due to loss or damage.

Costco alternatives

Not a Costco member or looking for less expensive options? We like Audien hearing aids as affordable alternatives to Costco devices. They’re available without a prescription and may be purchased online through the Audien website. They offer five models in various styles, ranging in price from $99–$489 per pair. OTC hearing devices are meant for mild to moderate perceived hearing loss only and are unsuitable for more severe hearing impairment. They have some limitations, like the lack of Bluetooth connectivity, so they’re suitable for those who want simple, easy-to-use devices without advanced tech features.

We would caution that Costco’s three prescription hearing aid models are fairly limiting, considering there are many more excellent brands out there. Dr. Julie Prutsman, owner and founder of Sound Relief Hearing Centers in Colorado, told us, “Each brand has something slightly different to offer, so you want a hearing professional with access to all those brands.”

Costco may suit those with fairly common or straightforward types of hearing loss, but those experiencing more complicated cases may want to seek care through traditional hearing care centers with access to a wider range of devices.

All Costco hearing aids are RIC-style. If you want more discreet, smaller, in-ear styles, read our roundup of the best invisible hearing aids.

FAQs

Does Medicare pay for hearing aids at Costco?

No, Costco does not accept insurance, including Medicare, for any of its hearing aids. While unfortunate, this isn’t unique to Costco. Traditional Medicare doesn’t cover hearing aids, regardless of where you shop.

Why are Costco hearing aids so inexpensive?

Costco hearing aids are cheaper due to the company’s bulk purchasing power, streamlined supply chain, and membership-based model. These factors allow Costco to offer high-quality hearing aids at lower prices than many traditional hearing care providers.

Are Costco hearing aids good?

Yes, Costco hearing aids are generally well-regarded for their quality and performance. They offer a range of models with advanced features, such as Bluetooth connectivity and AI technology, from reputable brands. Costco also provides excellent follow-up care and support, which enhances the overall value.

What brand of hearing aids are sold at Costco?

Costco sells hearing aids from several well-known brands, including Jabra Enhance, Phillips, Rexton, and Lexie.

Does Costco use audiologists?

Costco employs licensed hearing instrument specialists and audiologists in its in-store hearing centers. These professionals conduct hearing tests, fit and program hearing aids and provide follow-up care to ensure customers receive the best possible service and support.
