What you should know

With eight support layers, DreamCloud’s hybrid blend of memory foam and inner coil springs is made from quality materials that create a comfortable sleeping environment. The cashmere cover adds a nice touch of breathable comfort.

  • The firm feel of this mattress makes it an excellent choice for back and combination sleepers, but side sleepers may prefer a softer feel.
  • This budget-friendly luxury mattress has a price point under $1,000.
  • Reduced motion transfer through individually wrapped coils means less sleep disturbances, even when your partner is restless.
  • While it has decent cooling features, memory foam is known to sleep on the hotter side.
Pros

Cashmere cover creates a breathable top layer
Year-long sleep trial and lifetime warranty
Cons

It may not be comfortable for side sleepers
Memory foam may not be as cooling as other hybrid options

Why we like the DreamCloud Hybrid as best overall

The DreamCloud earns its spot as our top pick for its ability to deliver a hotel mattress’s superb comfort and support while not breaking the bank. This bed-in-a-box ranks as one of the best mattresses under $1000 while offering generous support and relief.

The DreamCloud starts with a light, breathable cashmere cover that lends a plush, quilted feel as you climb into bed. Its wicking design helps create airflow to control body temperature and reduce heat. Below the cover are seven more layers designed to bring you comfort and stability. Quilted foam layers combine with memory foam underneath for superior cushioning and contour that helps relieve pressure at critical points like your neck, shoulders, and hips. The CertiPUR-US gel memory foam ensures this mattress upholds high standards for health and safety. (3

The DreamCloud boasts cooling features in the gel-infused memory foam and heat-dispersing coils. However, memory foam is known to trap body heat, so the sleeping experience wasn’t as cool as we had hoped.

Our testers discovered thick coils surrounding the perimeter of this mattress, which maintain solid support all the way to the edge. These same individually wrapped coils extend throughout the mattress to help reduce motion transfer. Couples will appreciate this feature, knowing their partner’s fidgety sleep habits won’t disturb their slumber.

A standard foam layer effectively transitions between the memory foam cushion and the coil springs’ stability. Our evaluation showed that this balanced construction created the perfect combination of comfort and support.

This mattress comes in a single level of firmness, with the firm feel making it an ideal choice for back and combination sleepers. While we found it had decent cushioning, it’s worth noting that it may not be enough to alleviate pressure on the hips and shoulders of side sleepers.

What you should know

The Saatva Classic’s design targets lumbar zone support paired with contouring comfort layers that relieve pressure points and reduce back stress. This results in a durable luxury mattress with a year-long sleep trial and lifetime warranty.

  • High-quality foam, a Euro pillow-top, and coil-on-coil construction provide support where it’s needed most to help alleviate back pain.
  • Three firmness options make this mattress an excellent choice for any sleep position.
  • While this isn’t the cheapest mattress on our list, it is very affordable for its luxury comfort.
  • Saatva offers stress-free delivery with free set-up and mattress removal.
Pros
Luxurious comfort at an affordable price
Trial the mattress for an entire year
Made with eco-friendly materials
Free white-glove delivery
There are three firmness options to choose from
Cons
The price may not fit those looking for a budget-friendly option at $2,095
The mattress weight may make it heavy to move or rotate
Firmer options may be too firm for some

Why we like Saatva Classic as best for back pain

The Saatva Classic stands out for its durable design and superior support, which offer pressure relief for all sleep positions, especially in the lumbar zone. With high-quality, eco-friendly materials at the core of its construction, this mattress reigns as the best luxury mattress overall while maintaining a more accessible price than most high-end mattresses.

A layer of high-density foam resting on pocketed coils creates an ideal combination of contouring comfort and centralized support. This strategic pairing is at the heart of Saatva’s Lumbar Zone® Technology and boasts healthy spinal alignment. We consider this an exceptional highlight of this mattress, considering that back pain is one of the most common causes of decreased mobility in middle age. (4)

The Euro pillow top adds a layer of enhanced comfort with its plush, quilted design. While our testers found the pillow top helped maintain a comfortable body temperature, they wouldn’t consider cooling a standout feature for this mattress.

When buying the Saatva Classic, you can choose between three comfort levels. The mid-range Luxury Firm option offers a well-balanced medium-firm feel, which has been shown to reduce the risk of developing back pain. (5) However, the right level of firmness for you can depend on your body type. Heavy-weight sleepers may be better off opting for a firm mattress to ensure it maintains the optimal level of support.

Couples and other co-sleepers may be pleased to hear that our testers found the Saatva Classic performed well in reducing motion transfer. In addition, the high-density foam rail maintains enough support to sleep or sit comfortably on the edge of the bed without worry.

A luxury mattress can be a big investment, especially if you aren’t sure it’ll fit you. Saatva’s generous year-long trial allows ample time to ensure you get what you need from the mattress. Although, you will owe a $99 fee if you decide to return it.

The Midnight Luxe is part of Helix’s luxury line of mattresses, which provides support and comfort with a cooling feel to give that hotel-level sleep quality.

  • The Midnight Luxe delivers an outstanding combination of comfort and support.
  • At $2,373.80, the luxury feel comes with a higher price tag than some other hybrid mattresses.
  • This mattress is assembled, packaged, and shipped from Arizona, making it an excellent choice for those who prefer locally crafted products.
  • All sleepers can find comfort in this mattress, but side sleepers specifically will discover the design suits them well.
Pros

Cons

Less suitable for stomach sleepers
Expensive for a bed-in-a-box

Why we like Helix Midnight Luxe as best luxury

Many people may not consider a bed-in-a-box a valid option when envisioning a luxury sleep environment. However, the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress defies the odds with its outstanding performance in plush memory foam comfort and advanced cooling technology. This mattress proves you don’t have to participate in the sleep tourism and wellness travel industry to experience luxury sleep.

The Luxe offers all the superior features of the Helix Midnight while flaunting key upgrades that amplify the sleep experience. The hybrid construction of thick memory foam and multiple zoned coil layers creates a nice blend of comfort and support. Its medium firmness makes this mattress ideal for various sleep positions. Side sleepers will enjoy a softer feel at the shoulders for added pressure relief, while the firmer middle third provides enhanced hip and lumbar support.

Many people consider a mattress’s cooling properties essential to getting quality sleep. The Helix Midnight Luxe offers multiple options in this category. An added copper gel foam layer and breathable coils can help keep you cool. Additionally, the mattress comes with a TENCEL cover that is comfortable and cool to the touch. If that’s not enough to keep you from sweating at night, you can upgrade to the GlacioTex Cooling Cover.

The standard Helix Midnight model excels in the motion category transfer, and our testers were eager to see if the Midnight Luxe would uphold those high standards after adding additional layers of cushion. With multiple bodies in the bed at one time, testers noted they could feel larger movements, but it wasn’t enough to be overly disruptive.

Helix is known for its customized sleep experience through its short quiz on its website. After answering questions about your physical characteristics, sleep habits, and preferences, you’ll be matched with a mattress tailored to your unique needs.

The WinkBed Luxury Firm delivers optimal firmness with outstanding edge support to prevent sagging wherever you are on the bed. The mattress’s cooling properties will keep even the hottest sleepers comfortable through the night.

  • Lumber support and weight distribution promote spine alignment and help alleviate back pain.
  • This mattress is more affordable than many other luxury mattresses.
  • Couples will enjoy the superior movement isolation this mattress provides.
  • The moisture-wicking TENCEL™ cover and breathable coil-on-coil construction make this an exceptionally cool mattress.

Exceptional back support

Excellent choice for hot sleepers
Solid edge support

Cons
Shorter sleep trial than some competitors
Firmness may not be suitable for side sleepers

Why we like WinkBed Luxury Firm as best firm

We chose The WinkBed for its ability to strike the perfect balance between comfort and support in its Luxury Firm mattress. Its hybrid design is made from quality foam and individually wrapped innerspring, which optimizes back support while keeping sleepers perfectly cool through the night.

Maintaining a neutral spine is critical for easing the stress on your neck, back, and shoulders while you sleep. (6) The WinkBed impressed our testers with how well it helped maintain proper spinal alignment through the night. They noted that the firmness felt ideal for back sleeping. However, one tester felt less body contouring, creating pressure points around their shoulders, neck, and hips. As a result, side sleepers may struggle to find comfort in the firmness of this mattress.

Another highlight of this mattress is how responsive it is to body movement. It’s easy to move around and switch between positions, and you’ll feel like you stay on top of the bed instead of sinking into it. Furthermore, the extra edge support offers stability around the entire perimeter so you can sleep as close to the edge as you want without feeling like you’ll slip off.

The WinkBed also earns high praise for its effective cooling technology. The TENCEL fabric in the mattress cover keeps moisture at bay, while the gel-infused foam ensures body heat isn’t absorbed and retained in the mattress. Pocketed coils just below those layers increase breathability and airflow for maximum coolness.

While a price over $1,000 may be less budget conscious, The WinkBed is significantly cheaper than many other luxury mattresses we evaluated. Moreover, our testers noted that the construction felt durable and the materials were high-quality, which can lead to a long-lasting mattress worth shelling out a little extra for.

Finally, I was impressed to discover that this mattress was handmade to order in my home state of Wisconsin. This may appeal highly to buyers who prefer products made in the U.S.A.

What you should know

We highly regard the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe for its advanced cooling technology, which features a cool-to-the-touch mattress cover, gel-infused foam, and premium steel coils. This mattress offers pressure relief and support, making it a comfortable choice for most sleepers.

  • The various cooling technologies merge, creating a mattress that is noticeably cool to the touch.
  • Although this mattress is expensive, our testers say its luxury feel and cooling features make it worth the money.
  • You can choose between three firmness levels to find your ideal comfort level.
  • CopperFlex foam is highly responsive, meaning it’s easy to move around and change positions.
Pros
Exceptional cooling technology
Choose between three firmness levels
Made from durable, high-quality materials
Maintains spine alignment
Very easy to switch positions in bed
Cons
The soft option may still be too firm for side sleepers
More expensive than some competitors at over $2,000
Slippery feel reduces edge support

Why we like Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Cooling as best cooling

The Aurora Luxe Cooling mattress is second to none at creating a cool sleep environment with advanced features engineered to regulate body temperature. Along with setting an ideal room temperature to help you fall asleep, mattresses with this level of cooling technology can be critical for reducing the negative impacts that feeling hot and sweating can have on sleep quality. (7)

The GlacioTex cooling cover is the first ingredient in this mattress’s cooling recipe. Our testers noted that it felt soft, breathable, and cool. Below the mattress cover, the hybrid design combines foam layers with breathable inner coils. While most memory foam mattresses are known to retain heat, the Copperflex foam is gel-infused to help dispel excess body heat.

There are three firmness options: soft, medium, and firm. This flexibility extends Aurora Luxe’s cooling features to a broader audience of sleepers. The mattress’s responsiveness also allows easy movement and position changes throughout the night.

Our evaluation found that the mattress offered solid support and body contouring that maintained spinal alignment. There was minimal pressure in the lumbar area and no sinking. The Copperflex™ foam is known for this latex-like pressure relief, but it’s cheaper to produce, lowering the overall cost of the mattress. Unfortunately, our testers noted the foam felt too firm for side sleepers, who may want to consider a mattress that sinks slightly under their shoulders and hips.

It’s worth noting that this mattress falls short in the edge support category compared to other mattresses we evaluated. The cooling cover’s slippery feel made our testers feel like they would slip right out of bed. However, this may benefit folks with mobility issues because it eases getting in and out of bed.

  • It has the right amount of give to relieve pressure in the shoulders and hips without sacrificing back support.
  • This mattress is pricey at $2,499 outside sales events, which may not fit all budgets.
  • Hot sleepers will appreciate the enhanced cooling technologies from its ArcticTex Cover through its cooling foam layers.
  • Three firmness choices make this ideal for any sleep position and body type.
Pros

Ideal for side sleepers
Maintains spine alignment

Cooling features help keep sleepers cool
Cons

It’s heavy, so it may be hard to set up or move

Why we like Nolah Evolution as best for side sleepers

The Nolah Evolution delivers a luxurious sleep experience that rivals any hotel bed. Its hybrid design creates plush, cloud-like comfort that perfectly contours to the body, while the innerspring ensures the body stays supported and the spine stays aligned. As one of the best mattresses-in-a-box, it’s praised for the comfort it provides side sleepers, but our testers found it suitable for any sleep position.

As the thickest mattress on our list at 15 inches, the Nolah Evolution is packed with layers of high-density foam and individually wrapped coils. Nolah’s signature  AirFoam technology does an excellent job of redistributing body weight and relieving pressure. This allows more flexibility around the shoulders and hips and helps prevent side sleepers from waking up with aches and pains.

The HDMax Tri-Zone coils provide additional pressure relief, targeted back support, and excellent responsiveness. In our evaluation, we found that the spine stayed perfectly aligned in any sleep position. Additionally, the mattress knocked it out of the park to minimize motion transfer.

The Nolah Evolution also features a host of cooling technologies. It’s topped with an organic cotton cover and cooling Euro topper that keeps the mattress surface cool and dry. Another unique feature is the border gusset, which allows air exchange so body heat can exit while fresh, cool air enters.

This mattress comes in three firmness levels, allowing buyers to choose between plush, luxury firm, and firm. Our evaluation confirmed that the Nolah Evolution lives up to the hype for providing comfort for side sleepers, but they aren’t the only ones who can benefit from it. Our testers found it comfortable sleeping in any position. Notably, they highlighted the rare combination of pressure relief for the hips while providing excellent lumbar support, which can be especially helpful for stomach sleepers.

Why we like Bear Elite Hybrid as best memory foam

The Bear Elite Hybrid incorporates high-density, dynamic memory foam that provides the cushion and comfort sleepers dream of while the innerspring coils maintain proper body alignment and reduce motion transfer. Sleepers will feel cradled and supported by this mattress as they climb into bed.

The comfort starts with the first layer of gel memory foam that creates a cushioning feel as the mattress contours to the body. This copper-infused foam also boasts cooling technology that disperses body heat so it doesn’t become concentrated in the mattress underneath you. An additional layer of foam provides additional ergonomic support that helps relieve pressure.

Beneath the comfort of the memory foam are individually wrapped innerspring that provide zoned support and spinal alignment. These coils prevent excessive sinking, keeping you on the mattress so your back is supported and your spine stays aligned. Sleepers with restless partners or pets will appreciate that this mattress excels in motion isolation.

The reinforced edge coils helped our testers feel like they could sleep anywhere on the mattress without fear of falling off. They also noted that the mattress is easy to get in and out of, so it’s a solid option for people with mobility issues.

The Bear Hybrid Elite adds to its cooling technology by introducing phase change material into the mattress cover, which actively absorbs and releases body heat. Paired with a breathable CELLIANT® fiber that helps regulate body temperature, these features help you sleep comfortably without overheating at night.

This mattress is made of durable, high-quality materials that ensure it will last for years to come. However, if the Elite Hybrid price is out of reach for you, you could also consider the Bear Original, which is only $998, making it one of the best cheap mattresses on the market.

Why we like Birch Luxe Natural as best organic

The Birch Luxe Natural won us over with its commitment to using organic and eco-friendly materials to create a safer mattress for your home and the environment. Birch upholds this commitment throughout its company to ensure that all materials are responsibly sourced and organic.

The Birch Luxe Natural starts with an ultra-soft, breathable feel thanks to the cotton Euro top cover. The wool layer beneath the cover has a dual purpose: helping regulate body temperature and providing natural fire protection. Birch’s organic materials, like cotton and wool, earn the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification, guaranteeing they are truly organic while being responsibly and sustainably sourced. (8

This mattress truly shines below the surface. While most traditional mattresses are made from synthetic materials, Birch uses natural Talalay latex sourced from rubber trees certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and Rainforest Alliance. By combining firmer and softer latex layers, this mattress gives you a medium-firm feel that contours your body and offers targeted pressure relief for maximum comfort and support.

Beneath the latex, individually wrapped coils work independently from each other to reduce motion transfer while adding more support. The coils extend out to the perimeter of the mattress for extra edge support that will prevent you from feeling like you’ll slip out of bed. At the base of the mattress lies a second wool layer that provides stability, durability, and additional fire protection.

This mattress is a terrific choice for environmentally conscious buyers who value Birch’s dedication to creating organic and ethically produced products from start to finish. Unfortunately, natural and organic materials come at a cost. At $2,623.80, this mattress is at the top of the price range for luxury hybrid mattresses. However, Birch does offer a complimentary eco-rest pillow set as a bonus with your mattress order.

How to choose the best hotel mattress for you

Your unique sleeping needs can help you determine which mattress is right for you. We’ve outlined some key considerations below.

Firmness

The position you sleep in is crucial for choosing a mattress based on firmness level. Side sleepers often prefer medium-soft to medium mattresses that provide adequate pressure relief on the shoulders and hips. Medium-firm to firm mattresses can be best for back and stomach sleepers for optimal lower back support.

Body type can be another vital factor. Heavy-weight sleepers often find firmer mattresses more comfortable because they reduce sinking and maintain support. On the other hand, firm mattresses may feel too firm for lightweight sleepers who prefer a softer support level.

Stephen Light, a certified sleep science coach and the CEO of Nolah, says, “To recreate hotel-like luxury at home, opt for a hybrid mattress with supportive coils and two or more foam layers. Memory foam, other polyfoams, and eco-friendly latex foam are all great options for contouring and soothing pressure relief.” Additionally, the innerspring coils below bring support and reduce motion transfer. Motion isolation can be especially beneficial for co-sleeping with partners and pets that move around often throughout the night.

Light adds that you can enhance the comfort of your bed by choosing high-quality bedding.

“The bedding you choose matters just as much as the mattress. Complement your mattress with a billowing down or down-alternative duvet and ultra-soft sheets made with premium materials like breathable organic cotton.”

Cooling

Light also suggests focusing on mattresses with extra features. “Features like a pillow top, cooling technology, and enhanced edge support will also go a long way to make your bedroom feel like a five-star hotel,” he adds.

Choosing a mattress with proven cooling technologies can help regulate your body temperature throughout the night to prevent overheating and improve sleep quality. (9) Many hybrid mattresses boast cooling fibers in the mattress covers that help wick away moisture. The airflow provided by the foam layers and individually wrapped innerspring coils at the mattress’s core helps disperse excess body heat.

Budget

Mattress prices vary widely based on brands, materials, and extra features. To help narrow your choices, consider establishing a budget before you start shopping around. Fortunately, some excellent budget-friendly options still deliver the luxurious comfort of a hotel mattress.

Sleep trial and warranty

Buying a mattress can involve trial and error until you find the one that gives you the Goldilocks just-right feel. Most mattress companies offer a trial period that allows you to try the mattress for an extended time with the option of returning it if it doesn’t work for you. These trial times can vary from 100 days up to an entire year, and some may require paying a return fee.

A solid warranty policy can be another way to put your mind at ease before spending money on a mattress. You’ll want to consider how long the warranty lasts and read the fine print to understand the coverage.

What mattresses do hotels use?

Hotels often contract with manufacturers to make mattresses unique to their hotel line. Below, we’ll look at some popular hotel lines and the mattresses you might sleep on when staying at each.

Marriot Hotel

The signature Marriott bed is a high-density soy-based foam mattress. It offers the cradling effect many people love about foam mattresses but with added responsiveness, so you don’t sink excessively. This also helps increase the mattress’s durability and longevity so you can enjoy its comfort for many years. It’s described as a medium to firm bed, leaving some room for interpretation based on your experience. Marriott also has an innerspring mattress that offers increased support and reinforced edges. This mattress can be an excellent fit for anyone who prefers a springier, more traditional mattress feel.

The Westin Hotel

The Heavenly Bed is the Westin Hotel’s signature model made by Simmons Bedding Company. The hotel chain revealed a new version of the bed in 2024 that has been updated based on guest feedback and the latest developments in sleep science. It’s a hybrid mattress that layers gel-infused foam on top of pocketed coils. It boasts excellent pressure relief, motion isolation, and cooling. This mattress also features innovative fibers with antimicrobial and antibacterial properties to help keep the mattress cool, dry, and clean.

The Ritz-Carlton

Partnering with Stearns & Foster, the Ritz-Carlton’s custom-made mattress is a hybrid model that blends memory foam, latex foam, and individually wrapped coils. It offers a medium-firm feel overall with a plush pillow top for a luxurious sleep surface. The naturally cooling latex and breathable coils help regulate body temperature for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Four Seasons

The Four Seasons offers a superb luxury experience that includes choosing which mattress you want to sleep on during your stay. The hotel offers three custom-made hybrid mattress options by Simmons Bedding. The Signature offers the most balanced experience with optimal comfort, support, and temperature control. If you prefer a softer mattress, you can opt for the Signature Plush, which offers deeper body contouring and enhanced cooling features. On the other hand, the Signature Firm is available for those who want extra support.

Hilton Hotel

The Hilton bed, manufactured by Serta, is an innerspring mattress with extra coil support to prevent sagging and maintain proper spinal alignment. The sturdy coils extend to the bed’s perimeter for excellent edge support so you can sleep comfortably across the entire mattress width and easily get in and out of bed. The plush pillow top helps balance the overall feel with a touch of softness.

Hotels often contract with manufacturers to make mattresses unique to their hotel line. However, the characteristics they ask for in their mattresses, including what they’re made of and how long they’ll last, are similar.

Construction

With several types of mattresses available, Light explains why hotels typically opt for hybrid models.

“Hotels often choose hybrid mattresses because of their versatility and durability. Hybrids feature cushioning foam and a coil core, providing deep support and suiting a wide range of sleepers. Mattresses with Euro-style pillow tops are also hotel favorites. This added cushioning layer gives a mattress a plush, luxurious feel.”

Additionally, they look for mattresses that offer superior cooling technology to help keep sleepers at a comfortable temperature throughout the night.

Durability

Hotels are also conscious of the quality of materials used in the mattresses they purchase. They select mattresses made from durable materials that will hold up over time and through many different body types and sleep positions.

FAQs

Which mattress do they use in five-star hotels?

Many five-star hotels partner with popular mattress brands to design signature mattresses unique to each hotel. However, they all share similarities in how they’re constructed. The mattresses typically have a hybrid design incorporating foam and innerspring coils with an added mattress topper to provide softer, more luxurious comfort.

Why do hotel mattresses feel so good?

Hotel mattresses are engineered to balance comfort and support. Plush mattress toppers and comfort foam layers deliver a soft, luxurious feel, while the supportive core beneath promotes spinal alignment and reduces motion transfer. Additionally, using high-quality materials makes the mattresses durable and provides long-lasting comfort.

Are hotel mattresses worth buying?

Getting quality sleep is vital to your overall health and well-being. (10) While some luxury mattresses that provide hotel-like sleep comfort are on the higher end of the price range, ensuring you prevent the negative consequences of inadequate sleep can be worth it. Additionally, the high-quality materials used to produce the mattresses make them durable and long-lasting, so you get your money’s worth.

What firmness of mattress do hotels use?

Hotels use medium-firm level mattresses that appeal to various sleep positions. These mattresses are most likely to feel comfortable and supportive for all guests.
