Why we like Helix Dusk Luxe as best overall

We chose the Helix Dusk Luxe for many reasons: it appeals to a wide range of sleep preferences and needs. Based on our tests and research, we found that this mattress excels in key areas for a great sleep experience, including pressure relief and staying cool. Zoned lumbar support coils and a premium quilted pillow top create a great mix of comfort and support in medium firmness, which is ideal for spinal health. (1

This mattress is certified by CertiPUR-US® and GREENGUARD, which means it’s free from harmful chemicals and releases minimal levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Environmental Working Group recommends mattresses with low VOC emissions to improve indoor air quality and avoid health issues. (2) Another requirement of products earning this certification is passing tests for performance and durability. (3)

You can choose additional support and cooling upgrades to tailor the mattress to your specific needs, though, for around an extra $249. For instance, its GlacioTex Cooling Cover is an add-on option that regulates temperature and pulls heat away from the body, which is recommended for hot sleepers. Another option is a contouring dense foam ErgoAlign layer that the company recommends for people with back pain.

The Helix Dusk Luxe mattress is a bit pricier than other options at $2,374, and the price increases even higher if you add the extra cooling and support features. However, you have 100 nights to try out the Helix Dusk Luxe mattress at home to see if it’s a good fit. Plus, it comes with a 10—to 15-year warranty for peace of mind and long-term protection for your investment.

Cons

May be too soft for heavier stomach sleepers

Why we like Nectar Premier Copper as best memory foam

The Nectar Premier Copper Mattress is cooling, supportive, and comfortable with low-motion transfer, which is ideal for couples. Featuring multiple cooling elements, including a breathable cover woven with copper fibers, this mattress effectively regulates temperature to avoid overheating, which is especially helpful for couples with different temperature preferences. (4

Our tester found that the Nectar Premier Copper provides excellent support and pressure relief, especially for back sleepers. It felt doughy, but moving around and changing positions with a surprising amount of bounce for a foam mattress was still easy. Thanks to its 6 out of 10 medium firmness level, they felt the mattress could accommodate various body types, from lightweight to heavyweight sleepers. However, they noticed it’s likely too soft for stomach sleepers unless they’re lighter weight.

The edge support, which earned a score of 3 out of 5 during our testing, may need to be increased for couples who want to use the entire mattress surface. Motion isolation was better than average, but our tester found some noticeable movements that could disturb light sleepers.

At $1,949, the Nectar Premier Copper is priced toward the higher end. Still, you can thoroughly test its features with the 365-night trial period and Forever Warranty, the longest typically offered for mattress brands.

What you should know

The DreamCloud Hybrid mattress offers a luxurious sleep experience with a perfect balance of pressure relief and support. It is ideal for various types of sleepers, but especially for back sleepers. Adaptive foams and a coil unit create a gentle, responsive, cushioned feel that offers sturdy support and motion isolation.

  • The mattress combines layers of memory foam and pocketed coils to provide a comfortable and supportive feel, promoting proper spinal alignment and pressure relief. It is especially suitable for back sleepers and those who enjoy a mix of cushioning and firmness.
  • Despite its premium quality, the DreamCloud Hybrid is competitively priced at $1,332, offering excellent value for the materials and features it provides.
  • This mattress is best suited for individuals who prioritize a cool and supportive sleep surface, making it suitable for hot sleepers, seniors, and back sleepers.
  • Crafted with high-quality materials, such as a cashmere blend cover, gel memory foam, and individually wrapped coils, the DreamCloud Hybrid ensures durability, comfort, and breathability.
Pros
Perfect balance of pressure relief and support
High-quality materials
Multiple cooling features
Exceptional support spinal alignment
Promotes airflow
Super responsive
Cons
Motion isolation could be better
Heavy and challenging to move
24- to 48-hour off-gassing and decompression period

Why we like DreamCloud Hybrid as best hybrid

A combination of memory foam and pocketed coils provides excellent pressure relief and responsiveness in any position, making the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress comfortable for couples with different sleep needs. It balances comfort, support, and durability with a medium-firm rating (6 out of 10), a universally ideal firmness for most sleepers, especially those with back pain. (1)

Couples with different temperature preferences should remain comfortable due to a few temperature-regulating features. The top layer of cooling gel-infused memory foam contours to your body and effectively balances body heat by breaking up otherwise heat-trapping memory foam. (5) (6) Its breathable cover improves airflow and prevents overheating.

Made with high-quality materials, the DreamCloud Hybrid is designed for durability and resists sagging, so it maintains its shape over time. It features a thick pocketed continuous steel coil system (a single wire of loose coils) in the base and firm high-density memory foam certified by CertiPUR-US®, which helps ensure its quality.

The mattress also comes with a generous 365-night trial period and a Forever Warranty, giving couples plenty of time to test it out and secure their investment.

While the DreamCloud Hybrid has many advantages, some users might find it heavier due to its hybrid construction. Although the continuous coil system means the mattress is durable, it results in more noticeable motion transfer, and while it provides support, it isn’t targeted. (7)  However, this coil system is less expensive than pocket coils, helping keep the price down to $1,332.

Cons
May be too expensive for some couples at $2,095
Some motion transfer
Mattress weight may make it difficult to move or rotate

Why we like Saatva Classic as best for sex

Our testing and research on the Saatva Classic mattress found it to be the best mattress for couples looking to spice up their bedroom activities, which can help you sleep better. (8) During testing, it scored perfectly in bounce and responsiveness, meaning it’s incredibly easy to move around on the bed, switch positions, and enjoy intimate moments with your partner. It also has remarkable edge support, scoring full marks for stability and comfort even when using the edge of the bed. This feature makes it ideal for exploring different positions and allows access to all bed areas without sinking or slipping.

Our tester felt the Saatva Classic in Luxury Firm provides excellent pressure relief, particularly for back sleepers. It relieves pressure points and optimizes spinal alignment so couples can focus on their connection without discomfort or distractions. While the mattress doesn’t fair quite as well as some others in motion isolation, according to our tester, it still offers a decent level of stability during sex and is supportive and comfortable for sleeping. The mattress’s medium firmness level should work for many sleepers, including couples with different preferences.

Regarding cooling, the Saatva Classic features a breathable cover and a coil-based support system that improves airflow. Our tester noted that the mattress feels airy and soft, staying cool and comfortable without being cool to the touch. Lightweight side sleepers might find the mattress a bit firm, especially if they prefer a more enveloping feel. For them, we recommend the plush model of the Saatva Classic, which maintains the same high-quality construction but with a softer feel.

The Saatva Classic is priced at $2,095 for a queen-size, which is on the higher end of the price spectrum. However, it includes a 365-night trial to ensure a good fit and a lifetime warranty for peace of mind. Plus, it’s made from high-quality, natural materials and comes with free white glove delivery.

What you should know

The Nolah Evolution mattress is a luxury hybrid that offers comfort and support. It features pressure-relieving foams and zoned coils for optimal spinal alignment. Its top-notch edge support and excellent responsiveness make this a fantastic choice for couples searching for a king-size mattress.

  • Our testing found that the Nolah Evolution’s plush top layer, full-body support, and exceptional cooling technology make it a favorite for all sleepers. Back and stomach sleepers will particularly appreciate its lumbar support and spinal alignment.
  • The Nolah Evolution, priced at $2,699 for a King size (though it’s frequently discounted), offers a premium sleep experience at a competitive price.
  • The mattress is crafted with quality materials, such as pressure-relieving foams, zoned coils, and a border gusset, to enhance airflow and ensure durability, comfort, and breathability.
Pros
Multiple design features for enhanced cooling
Three firmness options
Comfortable for back, side, and stomach sleepers
Supportive all the way to the edges
Cons
At 135 lbs, it might be heavy and challenging to move
Shorter trial period than some competitors at 120 nights
The mattress may be too deep for some sheet sets at 15 inches

Why we like Nolah Evolution as best king-size

If you’re after a luxurious sleep with room to spread out, the Nolah Evolution in a King size will fit the bill. Our tester found it spacious and supremely comfortable, thanks to its plush top layer and full-body support, which make it feel like a top-quality hotel bed.

During testing, the mattress was extra supportive, provided ideal spinal alignment and stability, and prevented sinkage, even at the edges. This is an excellent feature for couples who want every inch of their King size mattress to count. Pressure relief is reasonably balanced, with slight shoulder pressure but excellent support for hips and the lower back. This mattress should work for couples with different body types and all sleeping positions, though back and stomach sleepers should particularly find it comfortable.

The Nolah Evolution’s first-rate cooling technology, which shined during our tests, effectively controls temperature and prevents overheating. It includes coils, open-cell, airy foam, and a gusset border to break up heat and promote airflow. (9) While it didn’t perform perfectly in motion isolation, the Nolah Evolution still absorbs significant movement. Additionally, the mattress’s bounce and responsiveness were ideal for easy movement when changing sleep or sex positions.

However, the Nolah Evolution might not be ideal for couples highly sensitive to motion transfer, as some movement may still be noticeable. It has a shorter trial period than some competitors, at 120 nights, and its full price of $2,699 for a King size is on the higher end. But frequent promotions reduce the cost, and its individually wrapped coils are more durable and supportive than less costly types, making this mattress worth the price.

The Emma Hybrid Comfort mattress is a hybrid of foams and coils with a firm yet supportive feel and minimal sinkage. It is ideal for back and stomach sleepers. The mattress has some cooling features, and the coils allow for airflow. Motion isolation and edge support are top-notch.

  • Our testing found the Emma Hybrid Comfort has exceptional motion isolation, good edge support, and a firm “on-top” feel without sinkage.
  • With some of the best pricing in the market at $1,319 for a Queen, frequent deep discounts, and a generous 365-night trial, this mattress is a bargain buy without compromises.
  • It features breathable open-cell foam and supportive coils for comfort and proper spinal alignment. It’s perfect for back and stomach sleepers who need an uplifting feel and lighter sleepers who like a firm mattress.
  • Crafted with quality materials and a Seven-Zoned Support System, the Emma Hybrid Comfort is a durable choice.
Pros

Excellent motion isolation
Strong core for exceptional support and weight distribution
Cooling foam technology
Good pressure relief
Effective motion isolation qualities
Cons
Noisy when repositioning
Limited firmness options—only comes in medium
May not provide enough pressure relief for side sleepers

Why we like Emma Mattress Hybrid Comfort as best motion isolation

Getting the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep (11) can be a challenge at the best of times, but if your bed partner wakes you up from tossing and turning, you’re likely to struggle even more. About a third of couples opt for a “sleep divorce” or sleeping in different rooms (12), but it’s worth knowing that sleeping with your partner has incredible benefits for your health and relationship. (13) If your top priority is sleeping through the night, even when your partner, pet, or kid makes that a challenge, the Emma Mattress Hybrid Comfort will be your best ally. During testing, motion transfer was so minimal it was barely noticeable—even when jumping on the bed.

The mattress is also an all-around high performer in support, cooling, comfort, and is budget-friendly. Plus, our tester found that the Emma Mattress Hybrid Comfort, with a combination of foams and coils, supports couples of different weights and sleeping positions.

While our tester noted it is not the coolest to the touch, the Emma Mattress Hybrid Comfort still regulates temperature with its moisture-wicking breathable cover, Breezy Airgocell Foam filled with air to absorb and release body heat and moisture, plus coils for airflow. (6)

The Emma Mattress Hybrid Comfort’s medium-firm feel will keep you uplifted and supported. Our tester noted: “Immediately when I laid on the bed, I could feel it was quite firm and didn’t offer much sinkage,” which makes it ideal for back and stomach sleepers. However, it’s likely not contouring enough for side sleepers to avoid hip and shoulder pressure. Some couples may also find it too firm for their liking, especially if they prefer a softer mattress with more contouring.

Cons
Edge support could be better

Higher price point than some other hybrids at $1,799

Why we like The WinkBed as best cooling

After thoroughly testing and analyzing the Luxury Firm model, The WinkBed came out as our favorite cooling mattress for couples. It incorporates a breathable, eco-friendly, moisture-wicking TENCEL cover and coils that promote airflow throughout. While our tester noted it doesn’t feel cool to the touch, it still regulates temperature, so you’re neither too cool nor too hot.

The WinkBed also performed well in motion isolation during our testing. While there was some movement transfer, the mattress still offers decent stability during sleep. Its Extra-Edge anti-sag support was similarly effective, providing stability and preventing sinkage, especially when sitting on the edge of the bed.

Our testing of the Luxury Firm found The WinkBed to be a well-rounded, comfortable, and supportive mattress suitable for most sleeping positions. However, our tester noticed that it took a few nights to fully get used to the firmness level.

If a firm mattress isn’t your thing, WinkBed offers four firmness levels to accommodate a wide range of sleepers, including a Plus option for heavier couples. All of The WinkBed’s options have joint and spinal health in mind. Depending on how you sleep, there’s a recommended firmness option for pressure and pain relief.

The WinkBed mattress is third-party tested for durability as part of its Duratech Lifetime Durability System. The company says it has proven that the mattress sags less than 2% over 20 years of use using independent testing methods. Although the WinkBed is priced higher than other options at $1,799 for a Queen, it’s a quality, durable option with stellar cooling and a lifetime warranty.

Why we like Brooklyn Bedding Signature as best budget

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is an excellent choice to get a good night’s sleep without breaking your budget. The mattress also excels in edge support, with our tester noting they felt incredibly comfortable and supported with barely any sinkage when lying or sitting on the edges of the bed.

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature did a decent job at cooling during testing. While it may not be the top choice for hot sleepers, it does have cooling properties that help regulate temperature, such as coils and a breathable moisture-wicking top. The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe may be a better fit for hot sleepers.

Despite its motion isolation features, the mattress has great bounce and responsiveness for easy movement and position changes, which our tester felt makes it ideal for combination sleepers. They also noted balanced pressure relief for most sleep positions and body types, though it may not be plush enough for those with sensitive joints.

Why we like Titan Mattress Plus as best for heavy couples

Choosing the right mattress for heavy couples involves considering support, durability, and comfort. The Titan Mattress Plus excels in these areas, as it’s designed explicitly for heavier-weight sleepers. During our testing, the mattress provided outstanding support, lifting the entire body without sinking. This is important for heavy couples to keep their spines properly aligned and avoid discomfort during sleep. (10)

Our tester noted the mattress offered plenty of support and spine alignment while being responsive enough to change sleeping positions easily. Its firm feel and sag-resistant design will likely last a long time.

The Titan Mattress Plus has excellent edge support with stability and comfort even at the edges of the bed. Heavy couples typically require strong edge support to prevent sagging and make getting in and out of bed easier.

One potential drawback of this mattress is its motion isolation. While the Titan Mattress Plus minimizes disturbances from partner movements to a reasonable extent, some motion transfer may be noticeable. And while it may not have specific cooling properties, the mattress’s construction allows for decent airflow. There is an optional cooling cover add-on, which is ideal for heavy couples, especially those who tend to sleep hot.

The Titan Mattress Plus’s firm feel, rated 7.5 out of 10, provides the support and lift ideal for heavy sleepers. Side sleepers, especially those with joint pain, may feel this mattress is too firm. Due to its firmness, it may not be comfortable for lightweight sleepers, so heavy couples should consider their individual preferences before making a purchase. At a total retail price of $1,249, this mattress is a great value and should last sleepers a long time.

Overall, The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress offers decent stability and great edge support and is ideal for couples with different body types and sleep positions. It combines natural latex and individually wrapped steel coils for excellent support and contouring. Performance (sleep experience)—30%

A high-quality mattress should feel like it’s designed to provide you with the best sleep of your life. They should also deliver on the promise of a great sleep experience. Our sleep science coaches assess various factors to reflect the functional aspects of the mattress as well as the user’s sleep experience. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Temperature regulation
  • Motion isolation
  • Edge support
  • Technology

Comfort and support—30%

Alongside the sleep experience, comfort and support are just as important for a healthy and restful sleep. A high-quality mattress should assist in providing relief with certain aches and pains a user may experience when sleeping. It should also help users wake up feeling energized and rested. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Firmness
  • Pressure relief
  • Spinal alignment support
  • Customization

Value—20%

Assessing value involves a meticulous examination of several key factors that contribute to a mattress’s worth. A mattress that’s priced just within reach of its target audience yet surpasses competitors in terms of materials, performance, and support presents a compelling value proposition. However, value is not solely determined by the lowest price point. We also find the balance between cost and the tangible benefits a mattress provides.

Customer experience—10%

Sometimes, the mattress can be great, but if the overall shopping experience wasn’t, that could easily put a sour taste in a user’s mouth about the mattress they just purchased. We put in the hours to determine how well the entire process of buying a mattress matches users’ expectations and what options are available when something goes wrong.

  • Shipping
  • Warranty
  • Customer service
  • Sleep trial

Health and safety—10%

It’s important to understand that a mattress is more than just a sleeping surface—it’s an environment where you spend a significant portion of your life. We meticulously assess critical aspects of mattresses that may directly impact your well-being and peace of mind.

Our factors in this rating include:

  • Hypoallergenic materials
  • Off-gassing and chemical exposure
  • Safety certifications

What is the best mattress size for couples?

When choosing the best mattress size for you and your partner, you’ll need to consider your budget, the space in your bedroom, and your specific sleep needs. A queen-size mattress is a safe choice for most couples, with enough space for two people to comfortably sleep without dominating the room. For larger couples or for those who’d like a more luxurious sleep experience, a king-size mattress could be worth the extra expense.

How to choose a mattress for couples

With so many available options, it can be challenging for couples to select a mattress that fits their needs and budget. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when mattress shopping:

  • Motion isolation: Particularly important for fidgety sleepers, choosing a mattress with low motion transfer will help to minimize disturbances if one or both partners move around a lot at night.
  • Cooling: The best mattress options for couples who sleep hot or like to cuddle up in bed incorporate heat transfer technologies into their design, including breathable toppers, cooling gel foams, and coils designed to maximize airflow. Some mattresses may include more than one of these features.
  • Support and firmness: A mattress that’s durable enough to support the weight of two people is essential. Partners who like to sleep right at the edge of their bed should look for a mattress with enough edge support to minimize sagging or feeling like they will fall out. Additionally, couples need to consider the preferred sleeping positions of each partner and choose a mattress with the right amount of firmness to provide ample comfort, ease aches and pains at the end of a long day and enable a restful night’s sleep. As a rule, heavier couples will need a firmer mattress.
  • Trial period: Most online mattresses offer a trial period after which they can be returned, sometimes at an extra cost. Couples should choose a mattress with a long enough trial period that both partners can thoroughly test it together to confirm that it meets their sleep needs.
  • Budget: Mattress prices vary widely depending on size, features, and construction materials. Selecting the most desirable features and setting a firm budget can help narrow down the options.

FAQs

What type of mattress is best for couples?

The best mattress for you and your partner depends on your budget, preferences, and sleep needs. However, some features are ideal for the needs of couples, such as cooling, edge support, motion isolation, and responsiveness. Heavier couples should look for mattresses with steel coils and plenty of durability and support features. At the same time, those with back pain may need a mattress with additional lumbar support and pressure relief. The Helix Dusk Luxe is a great all-around option that suits the needs of most couples, body types, and sleeping positions.

What is the best mattress for couples who toss and turn?

For couples who are a bit restless or take longer to find a sleeping position just right before they can drop off, we recommend the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. This mattress scored well with our testers for different sleeping positions, and its individually encased coils help to minimize motion transfer. The Emma Hybrid Comfort is also an excellent choice, and it comes with a more extended trial period than the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. However, it lacks as many firmness options. You may need to try several options to find the right mattress.

How thick should a mattress be for a couple?

A mattress thickness of 10 to 12 inches balances comfort, support, and durability. Some models are even thicker, including the Nectar Premier Copper at 14 inches and the Nolah Evolution at 15 inches. Thicker mattresses incorporate additional layers of materials for improved support and pressure relief, though they may make it difficult to find sheets that fit.

Is memory foam good for couples?

Memory foam contours to the body and offers excellent motion isolation. These features make it a great construction material for your mattress but remember that traditional memory foam tends to retain heat. A mattress made with open-cell or gel foam and other cooling features, such as a breathable top, would be a suitable choice for couples who sleep hot. Optionally, choosing a hybrid mattress with coils can increase breathability and airflow for a more comfortable sleep.
