The 10 best mattresses for heavy people, according to sleep experts

Body type is a pivotal factor when choosing a mattress, and heavy sleepers—those weighing 250 or more pounds—have unique factors to consider when shopping to ensure their bed provides optimal support and comfort. Because larger bodies put extra pressure on mattress layers, higher-weight folks need a durable bed with enhanced support. Without it, they often experience excessive sinking, poor spinal alignment, earlier mattress breakdown, and sagging in the middle or along the edges. (1, 2)

With so many mattresses to choose from, it can be difficult to know what to look for. That’s why we compiled a comprehensive list of the best mattresses for heavy people. We meticulously evaluated dozens of mattresses from the industry’s leading brands, considering critical components such as support, pressure relief, cooling, and overall durability. Read on to learn which mattresses we recommend for providing the best sleep experience for larger-bodied individuals.

Best mattress for heavy people overall

Our favorite among all of the mattresses we’ve tested for heavy people is the Titan Plus Luxe. Its durable hybrid design features high-density memory layers and a sturdy, resilient steel coil core. It provides an exceptional blend of plush comfort and robust support. Explore our full review to learn why this mattress is the best overall.

Why we like Titan Plus Luxe as best overall

The Titan Plus Luxe tops our list for its ability to provide heavy sleepers with a cozy, luxurious feel while offering the sturdiness and durability needed to ensure it holds up for years. Its medium-firm feel makes it a versatile choice that accommodates various sleep positions and body types, making it an excellent mattress for couples with differing sleeping needs.

Because durability and support are two of the most critical factors we’re looking for in mattresses meant for heavier sleepers, we started our evaluation from the bottom up. The high-density memory foam base supports the robust innerspring coil core. Our testers note that this mattress feels sturdy and strong from the middle of the bed, extending to the edges. They feel confident it will provide long-lasting comfort, so you don’t have to worry about mattress shopping again in the near future.

As a luxury update from the standard Titan Plus, we found the Luxe model owes its softer feel to an additional layer of comfort foam. This Energex foam offers deeper compression support and greater pressure relief as it gently transitions sleepers from the memory foam layers to the individually encased coils below. Above that, Titan sticks to its tried-and-true quilted gel foam and TitanFlex foam that we’ve come to love in the standard model. Both layers provide sleepers with additional contouring and pressure relief to gently cradle the body.

Our tester felt cushioned and supported while lying on their side and back. Unfortunately, they felt their hips sagging while sleeping on their stomach, which could lead to back troubles. Sleepers who spend most of the night on their stomach should opt for the firmer Titan Plus instead to help keep their spine aligned.

Thanks to the responsive foams and bouncy springs, we found this bed easy to move around. This is an excellent highlight for combination sleepers, those with mobility issues, and intimate couples. Another standout feature that partners will enjoy is this mattress’s ability to isolate motion. You can switch positions as often as you need during the night without worrying about disturbing each other’s slumber.

While this mattress has few cooling technologies, it still slept decently cool due to its gel foam and breathable coil structure. However, if you sleep overly hot, we recommend spending a bit more to upgrade to the GlacioTex cover.

What customers are saying

Amazon customers comment on how supportive and comfortable this mattress is, giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars with over 100 reviews.

“I bought this mattress for my husband, who has a bad back and needed it to fit an adjustable bed frame. I scored on all points…My husband is now getting a good night’s sleep, feels so much better, and is getting better each day. This mattress is extremely well made and very comfortable, even for folks like me who hate conventional mattresses.”

”Sweet Zzzzzzz’s,” verified Amazon customer

Unfortunately, the cooling cover didn’t work well for one Amazon customer, Dacia R., who said it was far too slippery: “We love our 13-inch mattress. It is comfortable and supportive. We regret the “cooling” topper. It is slippery. The sheets, mattress pad, natural latex, and any human being slide around. It flared up a lot of back pain. We definitely recommend the mattress and strongly advise against the cooling topper.”

What you should know

The WinkBed Plus features a hybrid design that provides lasting lumbar support for heavier sleepers through durable latex foam and reinforced steel coils. The moisture-wicking TENCEL cover and breathable construction help keep sleepers cool and dry.

  • This mattress will feel medium-firm to firm, heavier sleepers, and extra-firm to average and lightweight individuals.
  • Nearing the $2,000 mark, this mattress’s price may not be budget-friendly for some shoppers.
  • The reinforced edge support gives sleepers full use of the entire bed width.
  • The lifetime warranty offers peace of mind that the mattress is covered until you’re ready for a new one.
Pros
Zoned support helps reduce back pain

Cooling features make it an excellent choice for hot sleepers
Responsive and bouncy

Cons
This mattress could feel too firm for lightweight sleepers
Side sleepers with shoulder pain may need a softer mattress
It may be too pricey for budget-conscious shoppers

Why we like WinkBed Plus as best for back pain

The WinkBed Plus is designed specifically for heavier individuals, and we appreciate the extra care taken to ensure the mattress stays firm and supportive in the lumbar zone. A mattress that sinks too deep or starts to sag in the middle can cause or exacerbate back pain. (3) However, the robust support core and high-density foams within the WinkBed Plus ensure lasting comfort and support.

This mattress-in-a-box offers a luxurious feel with a soft TENCEL cover and a quilted Euro pillowtop. These layers add cushion without excessive sinkage, allowing us to feel pressure relief in sensitive areas while staying well-supported on top of the bed. While sagging is a common concern among larger individuals, the high-density foam used in this mattress ensures that doesn’t happen.

Taking it one step further, WinkBeds swaps traditional polyurethane foam for all-natural latex in the next layer. Latex is known for its durability, which helps maintain its shape and firmness. Research also shows that it performs better at distributing weight and reducing pressure points than traditional foam. (4) This, combined with strategically zoned support, helps ease tension in the back and maintain proper spinal alignment.

During our testing, we saw minimal pressure build-up around the back and shoulders, making it an excellent choice for back and side sleepers. However, the firmer feel may cause issues for sleepers who are more sensitive to shoulder pain and may benefit from more cushion.

Individually wrapped coils round out this mattress’s structure, contributing support and responsiveness. With reinforcement around the perimeter, we could sprawl across the mattress and sit along the edge without feeling like we’d fall off.

Hot sleepers and couples will appreciate staying cool and comfortable on the WinkBed Plus without paying extra for the cooling features. This mattress is breathable from the cover to the coils and actively disperses heat to help regulate body temperature.

What you should know

Multiple foam layers merge with reinforced steel coils in the Helix Plus’s hybrid design, offering a combination of comfort and support. Breathable materials and adequate airflow through the coils help prevent heat retention and regulate body temperature.

  • This mattress feels durable and well-made thanks to its high-quality materials.
  • Helix is known for running frequent sales that can help you save hundreds of dollars on your mattress purchase.
  • The medium-firm feel offers enough pressure relief and support to cater to many sleep styles and body types.
  • Heavier stomach sleepers may need a firmer mattress to provide more support and help lift their hips.
Pros
Medium-firm feel accommodates many sleep styles
Maintains proper spinal alignment for back sleepers
Sturdy edge support
Can support up to 1,000 lbs
Incorporates multiple cooling features
Cons
Shorter sleep trial and warranty than many competitors
Under perfoms in motion isolation
Pressure build-up may cause discomfort for side sleepers

Why we like Helix Plus as best hybrid

Sleepers looking for the best of both worlds should consider the Helix Plus. This mattress combines the best features of two popular mattress materials—memory foam and innerspring coils—to provide sleepers with a perfect blend of sturdy support, comfort, and durability for heavier sleepers.

When our testers climbed into this bed, they described it as feeling plush on top while staying sturdy and supportive. We attribute this to multiple layers of high-density foam that cushion and contour the body. The targeted pressure relief and responsiveness enabled the mattress to beautifully cradle the body without allowing the sleeper to sink too deep.

As a staple feature of hybrid mattresses, the supportive steel coils complement the comfort layers above. They are individually wrapped so they can respond independently to the unique curves of each sleeper’s body and help evenly distribute body weight. Typically, this design also helps reduce motion transfer across the mattress. However, our testing revealed less impressive motion isolation results compared with other competitors.

Heavy sleepers will likely perceive this mattress as medium-firm. This sweet spot between comfort and support can accommodate various sleep positions. Studies also indicate it’s the ideal mattress firmness for reducing back pain. (5) Side sleepers, beware: We did find a fair amount of pressure build-up in the shoulders, which may lead to discomfort.

Regarding cooling features, this mattress has a breathable knit cover, and the pocketed coils allow for good airflow. The mattress didn’t notice a big spike in temperature after lying on it for a few minutes. However, it may be enough for hot sleepers to consider upgrading to the GlacioTex cover for a premium cooling experience.

Helix offers in-home setup and mattress removal for an added fee if you have more room in your budget. Without this service, this 100-pound mattress may require you to recruit a friend or family member to help you move it to your room and onto the bed frame.

What you should know

Designed for bigger bodies, the Saatva HD offers a durable, responsive mattress with extra sturdy edges and enhanced lower back support. The comfort layers, which include a Euro pillow top, natural latex, and memory foam, provide a cloud-like sleep experience.

  • Heavy sleepers can find comfort in any position on this mattress: side, stomach, or back.
  • Luxury products often come at a high cost; this mattress is no exception.
  • This mattress’s organic cotton cover, perforated latex foam, and pocketed coils whisk heat away from your body, keeping you cool.
  • This mattress is only compatible with the HD Foundation or a platform bed frame.
Pros
Natural latex offers zoned support and durability
A Euro pillow top offers luxury comfort
Double edge support
Made with high-quality, eco-friendly materials
Free in-home setup and mattress removal
Cons
This tall and heavy mattress may be hard to rotate or move around
Not compatible with regular foundations, box springs, or adjustable bed frames
Poor motion isolation

Why we like Saatva HD as best luxury

The Saatva HD won us over with its ability to offer luxurious comfort without compromising support or durability. Saatva is a major player in the luxury mattress market, and we were excited to see that it developed an option that meets the needs of individuals with larger physiques. This medium-firm hybrid model supports up to 500 pounds per sleeper and features a mix of reinforced steel coils, natural latex, poly foam, and memory foam.

The thick, hand-tufted Euro pillowtop makes an excellent first impression, cushioning the body and offering instant pressure relief. Health-conscious sleepers will appreciate the organic cotton and antimicrobial treatment that help keep the surface cool, dry, and clean. Building on that is the natural mold and mildew-resistant latex. This layer offers zoned support that targets critical areas, including the lumbar region, hips, and shoulders. Latex also provides a quick bounce-back that adds responsiveness and resists sagging.

A layer of high-density memory foam is strategically sandwiched between the latex foam and the poly foam transition layer. This allows sleepers to experience additional pressure relief and body contouring without sinking deep into the mattress.

As we got to the steel coil unit below, we noticed a distinct difference in Saatva’s approach to support. The recycled steel coils are thicker than many other models we’ve tested and include a Lumbar Zone Active Spinal Wire for additional back support. Furthermore, the coils are surrounded by a dense foam railing that reinforces the edge support.

Saatva rates the HD as medium-firm, which is typically a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. However, our testers perceived a slightly firmer feel, rating it a seven. Regardless of that slight difference, we feel that heavy sleepers of any sleep position will find comfort in this bed.

Unlike most other mattresses on our list, the Saatva HD is not compressed and rolled up into a box. Instead, it comes ready to sleep on, with free in-home setup and mattress removal if you have an old one that needs to go.

Unfortunately, the high cost of this mattress likely puts it out of reach for many shoppers. It’s also worth noting that the HD is incompatible with adjustable bed frames, regular foundations, or box springs. Instead, you’ll have to purchase the Saatva HD Foundation or find a different compatible platform bed frame, which can further drive the cost up.

What you should know

Nolah designed the Evolution Comfort+ to provide luxury comfort for individuals with a range of plus-size body types. Its plush Euro topper cover and contouring foams provide pressure relief while the thick innerspring coils keep the body supported and the spine aligned.

  • This mattress keeps you well-supported while providing more cushioning and a softer feel than most options designed for heavy sleepers.
  • If the $2,499 price tag feels too much, you can catch this mattress on frequent sales, bringing the price closer to $1,600.
  • Because it’s on the softer side, this mattress is best suited for side and back sleepers.
  • You can pair it with the most adjustable base options for greater sleep customization.
Pros
Euro topper provides a soft, cozy feel
Exceptional pressure relief in the shoulders and hips
Sleeps cool
Maintains solid support around the edges
Compatible with adjustable bases
Cons
It’s likely too soft for most stomach sleepers
The higher price may be a limitation for some buyers
$99 fee for returns or exchanges

Why we like Nolah Evolution Comfort+ as best for side sleepers

With a softer feel than many other mattresses for heavy sleepers, the Nolah Evolution Comfort+ gently hugs the shoulders and hips to help prevent pressure build-up and reduce discomfort for those who prefer sleeping on their side. You might expect to experience less support as a trade-off for this increased comfort, but that’s not the case. The hybrid design incorporates zoned coils that offer lower back support and keep the spine neutral.

Nolah already shines bright in the mattresses for side sleepers category with its standard Evolution model. The brand uses many similar features in this mattress to replicate the excellent pressure-relieving qualities it excels at. Its quilted Euro topper provides two inches of plush cushioning, which continues in the proprietary AirFoam layer below. Combined, these layers help relieve pressure and tension on the shoulders and hips, which is critical for side sleepers.

Even with these comfort layers, our testers said they still felt well-supported on top of the mattress. This support comes mostly from the innerspring coils at the base of the mattress. Nolah maintained the lumbar zone support design but opted for thicker coils in this mattress compared to the Evolution and other models to provide extra strength and stability.

This mattress also scored high with testers in many other critical areas. They noted that it slept cool because of the organic cotton and ArcticTex fibers in the cover, the border gusset, and the airy design of the coils. Additionally, they were impressed with how responsive this mattress is, especially considering the initial softness they felt. Finally, they feel the good results from motion isolation tests make this an excellent option for couples.

The stronger support offered by mattresses designed for heavier sleepers sometimes limits their compatibility with certain bases. We were excited to learn that you can pair the Nolah Evolution Comfort+ with most bed frames, including any adjustable beds

Excellent motion isolation
Cons
Higher price than some hybrid competitors

Thicker mattress may be harder to handle when it comes time to rotate it

Why we like Bear Elite Hybrid as best pressure-relieving

The Bear Elite utilizes a hybrid design that pairs contouring memory layers with zoned support that targets pressure relief in sensitive areas and promotes better sleep quality. Sleepers with joint pain can find much-needed relief on this mattress as they experience the soft cushion and spinal support.

The overall feel of this mattress will depend on which firmness level you select: Soft, Medium, or Firm. Since heavier people typically perceive mattresses as feeling softer, we recommend the Firm option. The higher-density foams used in this model should give you the balanced comfort and support we love most about this mattress.

While the foam density may change between firmness levels, the type of foam used is the same. The first layer of copper-infused memory foam excels at conforming to the body’s shape to help reduce pressure points, which was noticeable to our testers when lying on their backs and sides. This material also contributes to the mattress’s cooling performance with its naturally cooling and moisture-wicking properties.

Up next is another layer of foam that helps transition your weight from the memory foam layers to the coils below. These individually wrapped springs are zoned like other mattress models we’ve tested, with thicker coils in the middle third that provide extra support for the lower back. Conversely, the thinner coils in the upper and lower thirds allow the bed to flex more under the shoulders and hips to help relieve pressure and keep the spine aligned.

In addition to the copper foam, Bear enhances its cooling features by introducing phase change material into the mattress cover. These fibers help regulate body temperature by absorbing excess heat. For even more restorative sleep, you can add the CELLIANT® cover. These unique fibers can repurpose your body heat by turning it into energy and returning it to your body, which has been shown to increase blood flow and oxygen in the skin to help your body recover and improve sleep quality. (6

While evaluating each component, our team noted how durable this mattress feels. Its high-quality materials should allow you to continue to feel comfortable and supported for many years. However, quality often comes at a cost, and the price of the Bear Elite Hybrid reflects that. Spending over $2,000 on a mattress may not be possible or desirable for all shoppers.

What you should know

The Saatva Classic’s coil-on-coil core construction offers maximum support to relieve back pressure and maintain proper spinal alignment. It’s a durable mattress that is backed by a 365-day sleep trial and lifetime warranty.

  • Each mattress layer incorporates lumbar support features to help ease pressure on the back.
  • Even though it’s considered a luxury mattress, it’s affordably priced.
  • Buyers can choose between three firmness levels: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm.
  • Saatva’s year-long sleep trial gives sleepers ample time to decide if this mattress suits them.
Pros

Exceptional durability
Three firmness levels to choose from

Cons

Poor motion isolation
Not enough pressure relief for most side sleepers

Why we like Saatva Classic as best innerspring

With memory foam and hybrid mattresses often dominating the market, the Saatva Classic proves that an innerspring-centric design can still provide luxury comfort. It has not one but two coil layers that maximize support and durability. Back pain sufferers will also appreciate that back support is a focal point throughout this mattress, incorporating Lumbar Zone® technology into every layer.

Saatva also gives buyers the choice between two mattress heights: 11.5 inches or 14.5 inches. Because heavy sleepers tend to sink deeper into the mattress, we recommend the thicker mattress to help maintain support. You don’t have to worry about the mattress thickness changing how it feels. Saatva simply increases the height of the base coils, which doesn’t impact comfort.

This mattress’s thick organic cotton pillowtop cover gives it a plush, luxurious feel. Our testers could feel the lumbar zone quilting, helping their back pain melt away. Below the cover, a layer of CertiPUR-US® foam is strategically placed in the middle section of the bed to provide additional back support. (7

We encountered the first innerspring layer as we sunk further into the mattress. These pocketed coils offer firmer support in the middle third of the bed while allowing the mattress to flex more under the hips and shoulders. We could feel how the bed offered subtle body cradling and contouring around the joints.

The second innerspring layer features a thick tempered steel coil base. This layer provides maximum support and durability and ensures the mattress won’t begin to sag over time. It’s also encased in a thick foam rail around the perimeter, enhancing edge support.

While the coils provide many benefits, including excellent airflow and superb responsiveness, they also have one significant disadvantage. Unfortunately, the bounciness that makes it easy to move around on this bed also leads to much motion transfer. If you sleep with a partner, child, or pet, you could experience frequent sleep disruptions as you feel their every movement.

During testing, we also noticed more pressure build-up around the shoulders, hips, and knees. This may be because the memory foam doesn’t extend to those areas but focuses only on the midsection. For this reason, we wouldn’t recommend this mattress for most side sleepers.

Why we like Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid as best for hot sleepers

Brooklyn Bedding takes cooling seriously in many of its mattresses, including the Signature Hybrid model, which incorporates multiple premium cooling technologies. Overheating at night can significantly impact sleep quality, and your mattress is critical in regulating body temperature. (8) Throughout our testing, we found this mattress outperformed many competitors at keeping sleepers cool at night.

The mattress surface is covered with a quilted topper made of breathable, moisture-wicking fibers. We feel it’s worth the extra $400 (queen-sized) for overly hot sleepers to upgrade to the cooling pillow top cover. The GlacioTex fibers offer cutting-edge cooling technology using thermal conductivity to quickly draw heat away from your body. We found this cover feels cool to the touch, but it’s also slippery. While that can make it easier to get in and out of bed, it also diminishes the edge support, with our testers noting that they felt like they might slip out of bed if they laid too close to the edge.

As we explored the hybrid design beneath the covers, we found two foam layers that help provide comfort and deep compression. These high-density foams offer elasticity, so the mattress quickly responds to your body’s shape no matter which position you sleep in. The thick layer of individually encased coils offers additional body contouring while keeping your body well-supported.

Our testers appreciated that they felt lifted and supported on top of the mattress. However, our pressure sensors showed more build-up around the hips and shoulders, which is to be expected when sleeping on the firmer option. Side sleepers may find more comfort in the Medium or Soft options.

Brooklyn Bedding prides itself on handling all of its bedding production in-house, which helps cut costs. That’s reflected in this mattress’s affordable price of $1,332, which drops even further during frequent sales events.

Why we like Plank Mattress Firm as best firm

Staying true to its name, the Plank Firm is the firmest mattress we encountered throughout all our testing. As the only all-foam mattress on our list, it’s constructed with 100% high-density comfort and support foams. The high-quality materials offer durability and ensure the mattress won’t sag over time, which is often a common concern with memory foam.

Even though this mattress is thinner than many competitors, that doesn’t impact its performance. Two layers of high-density foam provide extra solid support and help maintain the mattress’s structure. Our testers commented on how well it keeps the hips elevated and the spine in a neutral position. Its ability to reduce stress and pressure on the lower back makes it an excellent choice for those seeking back pain relief.

One of the most unique features of this mattress is that it’s flippable, meaning you can sleep on both sides. While one side offers a firm feel, the other side is extra firm. The difference comes from which foam layer is on top and which acts as the base layer. Flipping the mattress can also provide additional longevity by preventing excessive wear and tear on one side.

A common concern with all-foam mattresses is how hot they sleep since traditional memory foam is known for trapping heat. Thankfully, that was not our experience when lying on this mattress. The open-cell technology within the foam layers allows it to breathe and release excess body heat. As we’ve seen with other Brooklyn Bedding products, you can add a GlacioTex cooling cover if you consider yourself an overly hot sleeper.

Even with a touch of softness from the quilted cover, our testers rated this mattress between an 8 and a 10 out of 10 on the firmness scale, depending on which side they were sleeping on. That makes it ideal for heavier back and stomach sleepers who can benefit most from minimal sinkage.

What customers are saying

Amazon customers are impressed with the Plank mattress’s firm feel and its ability to help relieve aches and pains. Of the few negative reviews, most customers complained about the delivery and other aspects of ordering from Amazon.

In a five-star review, Amazon customer Ash A. says, “It has been 3.5 years [of] using this mattress, and I still love and highly recommend it. It does not sink, and we are very happy with this purchase. We bought this mattress for our guest bedroom, too. Side note: The extra firm side is really firm, and comfort depends on personal choice. We like the extra firm side of the mattress, too.”

“This mattress is super firm without feeling hard or thin like a futon,” writes another Amazon customer, “VespaGirl.” “To the contrary, when you lay on it, it feels almost like you are floating above the mattress. It has made a big difference for my back. I highly recommend it!”

Why we like Emma Hybrid Comfort as best budget

The Emma Hybrid Comfort stands out to us as the best affordable mattress for its ability to provide an outstanding sleep experience without breaking the bank. Balancing cost and quality can be challenging, but this mattress achieves that with its blend of comfort, support, and durable materials, all at a budget-friendly price.

The hybrid design combines three layers of CertiPUR-US®-certified foam with a supportive steel coil core. The first layer of foam features a unique Airgocell that resembles gel-infused foam’s contouring and pressure-relieving effects. As the name suggests, it has air pockets infused throughout that promote excellent airflow, reducing heat build-up and keeping your body temperature regulated throughout your slumber. Our testers felt the bed slept decently cool between this layer and the breathable coils.

The next two foam layers serve vital purposes in helping relieve pressure and provide firm support. Altogether, the foam is excellent at minimizing motion transfer throughout the bed. Our team put it through rigorous testing, including jumping on the bed, and they could barely feel any movement.

The pocketed coil system provides a robust, supportive core featuring seven targeted zones. It’s excellent at evenly distributing weight so the mattress adapts to your body’s shape. The stabilizing foam layer below adds to this mattress’s durability and helps ensure you won’t experience sagging any time soon.

The overall feel of this mattress is firm and bouncy. Our testers noted that they felt solidly on top of the mattress with little sinkage. Emma’s website describes this mattress as being right in the middle of the firmness scale for a medium feel. However, we felt this mattress was firmer than that, giving it a 7.5 out of 10. We also noticed some pressure build-up in the shoulders when lying on our side, but we felt comfortable and supported when back and stomach sleeping.

How we test mattresses

Every Fortune Recommends mattress review is guided by an experienced team of certified sleep science coaches, industry experts, and real-world consumers. Our proprietary testing methodology ensures each mattress undergoes the same meticulous evaluation so we can provide objective and trustworthy feedback that’s grounded in genuine user experiences. Performance (sleep experience)—30%

A high-quality mattress should feel like it’s designed to provide you with the best sleep of your life. They should also deliver on the promise of a great sleep experience. Our sleep science coaches assess various factors to reflect the functional aspects of the mattress as well as the user’s sleep experience. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Temperature regulation
  • Motion isolation
  • Edge support
  • Technology
Comfort and support—30%

Alongside the sleep experience, comfort and support are just as important for a healthy and restful sleep. A high-quality mattress should assist in providing relief with certain aches and pains a user may experience when sleeping. It should also help users wake up feeling energized and rested. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Firmness
  • Pressure relief
  • Spinal alignment support
  • Customization
Value—20%

Assessing value involves a meticulous examination of several key factors that contribute to a mattress’s worth. A mattress that is priced just within reach of its target audience yet surpasses competitors in terms of materials, performance, and support presents a compelling value proposition. However, value is not solely determined by the lowest price point. We also determine it by finding the balance between cost and the tangible benefits a mattress provides.

Customer experience—10%

Sometimes, the mattress can be great, but if the overall shopping experience wasn’t, that could easily put a sour taste in a user’s mouth about the mattress they just purchased. We put in the hours to determine how well the entire process of buying a mattress matches users’ expectations and what options are available when something goes wrong.

Health and safety—10%

It’s important to understand that a mattress is more than just a sleeping surface—it’s an environment where you spend a significant portion of your life. We meticulously assess critical aspects of mattresses that may directly impact your well-being and peace of mind.

Our factors in this rating include:

  • Hypoallergenic materials
  • Off-gassing and chemical exposure

What to look for in a mattress for heavy people

Considering that you spend about a third of your life sleeping, purchasing a new mattress can be a significant event. (9) Because each person’s body, sleep style, and preferences differ, there isn’t one perfect choice for everyone. You must find a mattress that suits your unique needs, and if you weigh over 250 pounds, there are some distinct factors to consider to help you choose a mattress.

Firmness

Everyone has their own preferences for how soft or firm they want a mattress to feel. However, heavier folks tend to perceive mattresses as feeling softer as they sink further into the layers, and a mattress that is too soft may not provide enough support. (10) If you like a more plush feel, consider a medium-firm to firm mattress with a solid, supportive core. If it feels too hard, you can add a pillowtop layer.

Sleep position

Your preferred sleep position also plays a vital role in which mattress will provide the most comfort and support without creating pressure points. Side sleepers often need a softer mattress that can cradle their shoulders and hips to help avoid joint pain. Medium-firm to firm mattresses can provide a balance of cushion and support that helps keep the spine aligned while back sleeping. Meanwhile, stomach sleepers typically need the firmest mattresses to help keep their hips lifted and not exaggerate the curvature of the spine.

Support

The mattress must resist sagging for heavier sleepers to maintain proper spinal alignment. Choosing a mattress with reinforced support through the middle section can ensure the mattress keeps your body lifted. For example, many of the mattresses on our list designed for plus-size sleepers include multiple layers of zoned lumbar support that help keep the shoulders, back, and hips in a neutral position.

Durability

A common complaint we encounter when reading mattress reviews from heavier sleepers is how quickly users experience body impressions or sagging. A durable mattress should last an average of seven years before you start noticing changes in comfort or support. (2) Heavy sleepers must pay extra attention to the type and quality of materials used since their body type puts more pressure on the mattress’s layers.

We recommend innerspring and hybrid mattresses, most often for larger-bodied individuals, because the steel coil core offers long-lasting, sturdy support. If you’re considering a mattress with foam layers or constructed entirely of foam, pay close attention to the type and density of foam used. High-density foams are less likely to be susceptible to quick sagging. Latex foam is another excellent choice due to its firmer, more buoyant feel. This natural material bounces back quickly and is less likely to form indentations.

Cooling

Your body temperature throughout the night significantly impacts how well you sleep. (9) Higher-weight individuals tend to retain more body heat and feel warmer, so a mattress’s cooling features are paramount. (11, 12) Cooling covers and breathable layers can help disperse heat and prevent moisture build-up so you can sleep comfortably and sweat-free.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness refers to how well a mattress pushes back against your body weight to help prevent sinking deeply into it. This can significantly reduce the effort it takes to move around and change positions throughout the night. It can also make getting in and out of bed easier, which is crucial for folks with mobility issues.

Edge support

You may have noticed that we mention edge support frequently throughout our mattress reviews. A bed with strong perimeter support can increase comfort, support, and longevity. Without sagging along the edge, you can fully use the entire bed width while feeling comfortable and stable no matter where you sit or lay.

Sleep trial

A mattress can sound perfect on paper or feel dreamy the first time you lay on it at home or in a store. However, determining if a mattress is right for you takes time and repeated use. That’s why we encourage choosing a brand that offers a sleep trial that gives you ample time to test your mattress at home. Each product on our list offers a sleep trial of at least 100 nights; we recommend going no shorter than that.

What makes a good mattress for heavy people?

It may seem obvious, but a good mattress for heavy people should be specifically designed to handle more weight across the entire mattress. Ideally, it will support at least 250 pounds on each side of the bed to help keep sleepers comfortable and reduce mattress sagging. Fortunately, many of the best mattress brands offer models crafted for various body types, including big, tall, or curvy consumers. Notable manufacturer mentions include Brooklyn Bedding, WinkBeds, Helix, and Saatva.

These “Plus” models, as they’re often named, typically offer a firmer feel to ensure sleepers experience ample support without excessive sinkage. This is critical for keeping the body lifted and promoting proper spinal alignment. A good mattress will also balance this extra support with adequate pressure relief to ensure sleepers don’t wake up with aches and joint pains.

When to replace your mattress

Replacing your mattress in a timely manner can ensure you continue to get restful and restorative sleep while reducing your risk of experiencing pain or stiffness associated with a worn-out sleep surface. On average, a mattress should last between seven and ten years before you need to consider replacing it. (2) The quality and type of materials used will impact your mattress’s lifespan, with hybrid, innerspring, and latex mattresses typically holding up the longest.

However, you shouldn’t rely solely on this timeline to help determine when it’s time to get a new mattress. You can watch for other clues that may indicate your mattress is at the end of its life. If you notice any of the following, it may be time to shop for a new bed.

  • Your mattress is visibly sagging or lumpy
  • You notice a body indentation where you typically sleep
  • You’re waking feeling sore, achy, or in pain
  • You aren’t feeling well-rested when you wake up
  • Your mattress becomes noisy due to creaky springs
  • You’re experiencing new or worsening allergies, which can be from a build of dust, mold, or mildew

Mattress weight capacities

Our extensive mattress testing and research show that most mattresses typically support up to 250 pounds of weight on each side, including body weight, bedding, and any added mattress toppers or protectors. This can be troublesome for individuals who weigh more than 250 pounds or couples who exceed 500 pounds together. While the mattress will likely support this higher weight initially, it may break down or sag quickly. Some manufacturers may also indicate that exceeding the mattress’s weight capacity will void the warranty.

Thankfully, many mattress manufacturers have introduced mattresses designed for heavier sleepers with a higher weight capacity. Many of these beds have enhanced support features that can withstand up to 950 to 1,000 pounds, which is true of most mattresses in this roundup.

While many brands list the weight capacity in the mattress description or Frequently Asked Questions section, it may be harder to find on some websites or in-store. If you’re unsure, we recommend calling or emailing the brand to get this information.

FAQs

What is the best mattress for heavy people?

Because everyone has different sleeping styles and preferences, there isn’t a universal mattress that will work well for all heavy-weight sleepers. To find the best mattress, you must consider how you carry your weight, your typical sleeping position, how hot you get, and any other sleep preferences. However, if we had to pick just one, our team favors the Titan Plus Luxe above the different mattresses we tested. It stands out for its durable support, exceptional comfort, and ability to keep sleepers cool at night.

Do heavy people need a soft or firm mattress?

The ideal mattress firmness depends on your personal preference and sleep style, but heavy sleepers typically need firmer mattresses to help maintain support. These mattresses are also less likely to sag over time, a common concern among higher-weight individuals.

Why does buying a mattress for your body type matter?

Your body type, including your weight and shape, significantly affects how much pressure is put on the mattress and in what areas, which impacts comfort and durability. While lightweight folks tend to perceive mattresses as firmer, heavier individuals experience a softer feel as they sink further into the mattress. Increased pressure on a bed can also impact its lifespan, meaning heavier sleepers require a durable mattress.

What is a bariatric mattress, and who is it best for?

Engineered specifically for heavy-weight individuals, bariatric mattresses have reinforced support systems to help provide adequate comfort and firm support while resisting sagging. Typically, they offer a higher weight capacity than standard mattresses, with some supporting up to 1,000 pounds. While many come in standard sizes, these heavy-duty beds are also often available in wider sizes, and some may have unique features tailored to meet specific medical needs.

What is the best mattress for heavy sleepers who sleep with a smaller partner?

Finding the right mattress can be tricky when you and your sleeping partner have different body types. To help accommodate both of your needs, you might consider a mattress with dual firmness—meaning each side has a different feel—or an adjustable mattress that gives each person control over the firmness level on their side. Another excellent strategy is to choose a split king, which is two twin XL mattresses you can buy in varying firmness levels.
