Ritual vitamins review by a registered dietitian

The supplement industry is a confusing and sometimes dangerous place to navigate, as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness as they do for medications. (1) Companies like Ritual make it easier to choose supplements that are rigorously third-party tested for contaminants like heavy metals, microbes, and major allergens, and for purity and potency so you know that you’re getting exactly what the bottle says, without the addition of unwanted or unsafe substances.

As a registered dietitian, I know how complicated choosing the right supplement can be. Even the best multivitamins can include wildly different types and amounts of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients across brands. Ritual is a popular supplement brand with multiple multivitamin formulations unique to men and women to support different life stages, from teenagers to adults, older age, and during pregnancy and postpartum. Our Ritual vitamin review includes eight of their popular multivitamin products to help you find the right multivitamin for your needs.

What you should know

Ritual Essential for Him Teen is a subscription-based, allergen-free, third-party tested supplement that includes specific nutrients for boys ages 13 to 17 to help fill potential nutrient gaps.

  • Each two-capsule dose includes nutrients specific for male health, including vitamin A and zinc, in addition to nutrients many teens of both genders fall short on, in doses appropriate for boys under 18.
  • When ordered through the manufacturer’s website, it’s available only as a monthly subscription.
  • This supplement is best for teen boys who eat a balanced diet but may need a little extra support.
Pros
Vegan, gluten-free, and allergen friendly
Formula specific to teenage males
Third-party tested
Minty flavor
No added sugars or colors
Cons
Subscription required if purchased through the website
May not meet the needs of boys with poor diets

Why we like Ritual Essential for Him Teen Multivitamin

Ritual Teen Multivitamin for Him is designed to meet the needs of growing teenage boys, supplementing the nutrients they need most and are most likely to fall short on.  You’ll only find nine ingredients in this multivitamin, a significantly shorter list than many other brands, typically including all or most vitamins and minerals. (2)

As Ritual has a food-first philosophy, they aim to avoid overloading the body with nutrients that may hinder the absorption of others. This is a great feature for teen boys who eat an overall balanced diet, but it may not be appropriate for those who need more calcium or vitamin C, as Ritual excludes these two nutrients from the formula. Calcium and vitamin C are found in an abundance of foods, many of which may make up a good portion of a teenager’s diet (dairy, orange juice, fruit, and fortified foods like cereal or cereal bars). But if your teen isn’t eating enough of these types of foods, they may not get everything they need from this Ritual multivitamin.

As it’s formulated specifically for males, vitamin A and zinc are added. Two out of three teenage boys do not get enough zinc, which is essential for a healthy immune system. (3) Starting in the early teen years, boys require more vitamin A than girls. This fat-soluble vitamin is essential for a healthy immune system, eye health, growth and development, and sexual reproduction. (4) When combined, zinc and vitamin A have an even greater impact, as zinc is needed to transport vitamin A in the blood and convert vitamin A into a retinal, which helps support eye health and function. (5)

You’ll find 330 milligrams of DHA and 90 micrograms of vitamin K2, two nutrients that are not widely available in foods that make up a typical teen boy’s diet. In a recent study, adolescents with the highest levels of DHA had significantly higher attention performance than those with lower levels. (6) Vitamin K2, a vitamin found in fermented foods like natto, kefir, and sauerkraut, plays an important role in bone development, and since 90 percent of peak bone mass is obtained by age 18 or 19, supplementing during the teenage years is beneficial.  (7)

As a step up from typical chewable or gummy children’s vitamins, your teen must swallow the capsules, which may be a new experience for younger teens. They have a minty taste and are free from major allergens, gluten, and animal products, making them appropriate for any number of dietary restrictions.

What customers are saying

Amazon customers give Ritual Teen Multivitamin for Him an average of 4.2 out of 5 stars. Most are happy with the quality and nutrients while commenting that they make it easy to get their teen to take them daily.

Many customers turn to this multivitamin after relying on gummies or chewables.

“Love that it’s a sugar free option easy to swallow size pills. He used to have to eat gummies but since he got braces he refuses to eat them, so glad we tried this one out.”

Username “RDI Store,” Amazon

While many customers enjoy the minty flavor and report no side effects, others are not so lucky. A few reviews mention that this supplement made their teen feel nauseous. Reviewer Daniel Z. says, “I don’t know if this provided the nutrients my son needed or not but it made him feel sick and he refused to take it.”

What you should know

Ritual Essential for Her Teen Multivitamin is a daily, subscription-based multivitamin that gives teen girls a nutrient boost with 10 vitamins and minerals they may not get enough of through diet alone.

  • Includes 10 nutrients specific to the needs of teenage girls, including vitamin A, iron, magnesium, vitamin K2, and more.
  • This supplement is more expensive than many other multivitamins but includes traceable ingredients, third-party testing for purity and potency, and is allergen-friendly, gluten-free, and vegan.
  • Teenage girls who generally eat a balanced diet but may not get everything they need from food alone will benefit most from this supplement.
Pros
Vegan, gluten-free, and allergen friendly
Third-party tested
Formula specific for menstruating teenage girls
Minty flavor
Includes highly-absorbable chelated iron
No added sugars or colors
Cons
Iron may cause digestive symptoms
Subscription required if purchased through the website

Why we like Ritual Essential for Her Teen Multivitamin

Ritual Teen Multivitamin for Her includes nutrients essential for a teenage girl’s growing body. Following Ritual’s food first philosophy, you won’t find an overabundance of nutrients in amounts well over the recommended dietary allowance (RDA), just those most essential and most likely to be lacking in a typical teenage girl’s diet. It’s also vegan, gluten-free, and free from major allergens, making it appropriate for girls with specific diet restrictions and preferences.

Notably different from the teen boy’s supplement by Ritual, this option has 400 micrograms of dietary folate equivalents (DFE) and 8 milligrams of iron. In comparison, the boy’s multivitamin only has 100 micrograms of DFE and no iron.  With iron deficiency anemia impacting 9 to 16 percent of adolescent girls and causing symptoms like fatigue, irritability, weakness, and headaches, the addition of chelated iron in each dose is a major benefit. (8, 9) Chelated iron has been found to pass through the digestive system easier than regular iron. Even so, the addition of iron could potentially lead to digestive side-effects like nausea or constipation, although the low dose minimizes the risk of these effects. (10)

Even though only 12.8 percent of teens meet oily fish recommendations, and the brain continues to develop until age 25, not all multivitamins include this nutrient. (11, 12) Ritual multivitamins for teens add 330 milligrams of omega-3 DHA to help support brain development during these formative years, which can be extremely beneficial. (12)

While this Ritual supplement is impressive in many ways, leaving calcium out of a supplement for teenage girls is a questionable decision. Calcium is needed for bone density and growth, most of which happens during the teen years. Supplementing with calcium during the years after reaching menarche could help improve bone mineral density in the future, especially for girls who struggle to eat high-calcium foods. (13)

What customers are saying

Overall, customers find this product to be effective and a good value, with an average of 4.2 out of 5 stars on Amazon.

“We saw behavior issues so I thought if she won’t eat all the good food I put on the plate then we supplement with vitamins. It’s working! She likes taking them and enjoys the mint taste they have. She can even tell the difference since taking them.”

Hazel, Amazon

We know that even the best multivitamins won’t work if your teen won’t take them.  Flavor seems to be the most polarizing feature of this multivitamin, promoting adherence for some teens and completely turning others off. Reviewer and parent Seachele agrees with Hazel, reporting that her daughter has no problem taking her daily vitamins.  “They have a mint in them that gets rid of any yucky after-taste. (She says they taste like mint tea.) Just what we needed!” she commented.

While many people love the minty taste, just as many find it too overpowering. Reviewer LW says, “They have a weird minty flavor and leave a strange sensation in your mouth. My daughter hated them.”

What you should know

Ritual’s multivitamin formulation, specifically for adult women, features vitamins, minerals, and additional nutrients in a highly absorbable two-capsule serving to complement a balanced diet.

  • Ritual Essentials for Women 18+ helps you get nine vitamins, minerals, and nutrients specific to pre-menopausal health that can be hard to get from food, including omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and boron.
  • At $1.10 per serving, this multivitamin is right in the middle, providing a high-quality product at a mid-range price compared to many other supplements on the market.
  • This multivitamin supplement includes nutrients for premenopausal adult women but does not meet the specific needs of pregnancy, postnatal, or menopause.
  • As a vegan supplement, it’s a good source of plant-based DHA, vitamin D, and iron, which may be difficult to get enough of on a vegan diet.
Pros
USP Verified
Vegan and gluten-free
Clinically proven to increase omega-3s and vitamin D
Includes traceable and highly absorbable ingredients
Cons
Only available by subscription if ordered on the website
Does not include some nutrients you may need more of, like calcium and vitamin C

Why we like Ritual Essential for Women Multivitamin 18+

Ritual Women’s Multivitamin 18+ addresses potential nutrient gaps that can have a negative impact on overall health and well-being. Each two-capsule serving provides vitamins B12, D, K2, E, folate, iron, magnesium, DHA, and boron. This subscription-based supplement is vegan, gluten-free, and free from major allergens. We love that it’s third-party tested and USP-verified, so you know you’re getting exactly what the bottle says and nothing it doesn’t.

Using highly absorbable and bioavailable nutrients and delivering them in a delayed-release capsule helps this supplement stand out. A recent small clinical study of healthy premenopausal women (funded by Ritual) found that taking this multivitamin as directed for 12 weeks increased serum vitamin D, folate, and omega-3 fatty acids, while the placebo group had either little or no increase in these nutrients. (14) While the study was small, these results add confidence that the 250 percent DV of vitamin D and 330 milligrams of DHA can help get and keep your nutrient stores where they need to be.

A notable addition to this women’s multivitamin is boron, a mineral that’s not found in all multivitamins as it’s classified as non-essential. (15) Even though there is no RDA for boron, research has found that it may reduce bone loss through its effect on hormones, including estrogen, testosterone, and vitamin D. (16)

Ritual’s nine nutrients is a significantly shorter list than most other multivitamins. While this is a positive in some instances, as overconsumption of some nutrients can lead to decreased absorption of others, you’ll want to be sure you’re getting enough calcium in your diet, a key mineral Ritual leaves out. If you eat a varied diet, including plenty of dairy and fortified foods, you likely won’t miss the non-existent calcium in this supplement. But, if your intake is limited, you may want to talk with your doctor about another supplement to help meet your needs.

What customers are saying

With 3,026 global reviews and a 4.2 out of 5-star rating on Amazon, customers generally enjoy this supplement and appreciate that they get the vitamins they need without unnecessary ingredients.

“I have had a subscription to Ritual vitamins for years now. Makes me feel great, my bloodwork always comes back great, and the subscription gives me peace of mind to know that I won’t run out.”

Meghan S., Amazon

However, even though some customers love the ingredients and the value, they just can’t get past the taste. “The ingredients in these are amazing. The research behind them is legit. The quality is great… Let’s get that out-of-the-way. Here is the actual TEA: these taste gross,” says reviewer Jazmyn W. She’s not alone either, as many reviewers comment on the odd flavor of mint and fish.  “That being said, I’ve gotten used to it and I take these daily and when I do take them, I feel a lot better,” Jazmyn W. adds to her overall positive review, despite the unpleasant flavor.

What you should know

Ritual Essentials for Men 18+ provides 10 nutrients essential to male health that may be difficult to get through diet alone. We love that this supplement is third-party tested, uses traceable ingredients, and uses quality, highly absorbable nutrient forms along with delayed-release capsules.

  • We love that this supplement includes the nutrients you may need to complement a balanced, overall healthy diet and skips the nutrients most adult men get enough of.
  • At $33 for a month’s supply, this vitamin may not be in everyone’s budget, but as a high-value supplement with transparency, testing, and quality ingredients, it is a good value compared to many others on the market.
  • While this supplement doesn’t include calcium, it does contain several calcium helpers like boron, vitamin K2, and vitamin D to help your bones absorb and use the calcium in your diet.
Pros
Vegan, gluten-free, and allergen friendly
Third-party tested
Formula specific to male nutrient needs
Includes several nutrients to support bone health
No added sugars or colors
Uses highly absorbable forms of nutrients
Cons
Many customers can’t get past the mint and fish taste

Why we like Ritual Essential for Men Multivitamin 18+

Ritual Men’s Multivitamin 18+  is an excellent multivitamin for adult males, as it’s formulated to address nutrient gaps specific to men’s health. Each two-capsule dose includes vitamin D3, methylated forms of vitamin B12 and folate, and chelated zinc bisglycinate and magnesium for maximum absorption rates. (17, 18) You’ll also find vitamin A, vitamin E, boron, vitamin K2, and omega-3 fatty acid DHA. Each ingredient is traceable and serves a specific purpose for your overall health and well-being.

While this supplement leaves out calcium with the reasoning that most adult males get enough of it in their diet, it does include several nutrient helpers to support healthy and strong bones.

Folate and vitamin B12 are two B vitamins that have the most impact on bones, as they help keep homocysteine levels in check, an amino acid that, if too high, impairs collagen, leading to poor bone health. (19) The 250 percent DV of vitamin D supports calcium absorption, while vitamin K2 helps direct that calcium into bones and teeth and away from soft tissues like arteries. (20)

Each dose also includes 0.7 milligrams of boron, a non-essential mineral that is a key player in many areas of men’s health. Boron is associated with lower excretion of calcium, helping keep more in the body for bone strength, and it also plays an important role in releasing protein-bound testosterone, converting it into circulating free testosterone. (16)

While the nutrients included are noteworthy, the delivery system also makes this a superior multivitamin. The delayed-release capsule allows many people to take this supplement in the morning without adverse effects such as GI symptoms, especially for those who do not like to consume food early in the morning, as the nutrients are released over several hours.

Each bottle is $33, or $1.10 per serving with the subscription model. At this price, it may be out of budget for some, especially if you need additional supplements to replace the ones Ritual leaves out.  However, with third-party testing, traceable ingredients, and the quality and bioavailability of the nutrients used, the cost of this men’s multivitamin is appropriate for the value when compared to others on the market.

What customers are saying

Amazon customers have given this supplement 4.3 out of 5 stars with 1,580 global ratings. Many are satisfied with the easy-to-swallow capsules and the nutrient content of the vitamins.

“An amazing source of vitamins for sure felt the difference after using it, but I wish they can fix the oil fish after taste,” says reviewer Ahmed E.

Speaking of the fishy taste, this is the most common complaint, as many people feel the mint is overwhelming, and the fishy aftertaste (and fish burps) extends for hours after you’ve taken the supplement.  Verified reviewer Molson says, “Mint is too strong and leaves an aftertaste of minty fish. I don’t doubt the benefits of these, I just can’t get by the minty fishy aftertaste.”

What you should know

Ritual Essential Multivitamin for Women 50+ addresses the changing nutrient needs as women age, are no longer menstruating, and may be experiencing a decrease in nutrient absorption as is a regular part of healthy aging. (21)

  • As a multivitamin designed for women over 50, you’ll find no iron, less folate, more vitamin B12, magnesium, vitamin E, and vitamin K2 compared to the Ritual multivitamins for women 18+ to accommodate changing nutrient needs with age.
  • At $39 for a month’s supply, this daily multivitamin is more expensive than Ritual’s 18+ multivitamin for women.
  • Women over 50 who are experiencing perimenopause or are post-menopausal and eat a balanced, overall healthy diet may benefit from the nutrients provided by this multivitamin.
  • As a multivitamin with only eight nutrients, it may not be enough for some women over 50, especially if you have decreased appetite, intake, or a poor diet.
Pros
Vegan and gluten-free
Easy-to-swallow capsules
Minimizes nutrients no longer needed in large amounts, like folate and iron
Includes higher amounts of nutrients needed during aging, like vitamin B12.
Traceable ingredients
Cons
At $1.30 a serving it is more expensive than many multivitamins
Missing nutrients women over 50 need, like calcium and vitamin C

Why we like Ritual Essential for Women Multivitamin 50+

Ritual Women’s Multivitamin 50+ is designed for women who are no longer of child-bearing age and are either in perimenopause or post-menopausal. As a woman ages, her nutrient needs change, and this multivitamin reflects those changes well. The subscription model makes receiving a new bottle each month easy and convenient, and we love the transparency of ingredients and third-party testing.

Ritual removes iron from their women’s 50+ supplement, since without menstruation, the recommendations for iron go from 18 milligrams per day to 8 milligrams per day, an amount most women get through diet alone. (22) Most women over 50 can no longer bear children, so the recommendations for folate also decrease as they no longer need high amounts to support a developing fetus. You’ll still get some folate, but just 50 percent of the DV to supplement what’s eaten in foods like spinach, rice, fortified cereals, and asparagus. (23) Each two-capsule serving includes the same 330 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acid DHA to support cognition and heart health while helping to decrease inflammation. (24)

A common side effect of aging, whether you’re a man or woman, is a decrease in nutrient absorption, and in the case of vitamin D, a decreased ability to trigger vitamin synthesis from sun exposure. The 250 percent DV of vitamin D in each serving helps support bone health, muscle function, and immune health. (25)

Vitamin D, vitamin K, magnesium, and boron work together to support healthy bones by increasing calcium absorption and retention as well as collagen strength. (16, 20) Women over 50 have a four times higher rate of osteoporosis than men,so  the addition of calcium and vitamin C, two nutrients essential for bone health, is something we would like to see in a multivitamin for this gender and age group. (26, 27)

What customers are saying

With 4.1 out of 5 stars and 976 global ratings on Amazon, most customers enjoy the quality and effectiveness of this supplement. Many report feeling a difference in their energy levels and overall well-being when taking them. Amazon reviewer Kim M says, “I was a little skeptical at first but these vitamins are amazing,” she commented, “I feel so much better and it makes my 12 hour shifts more manageable. I’m a fan!”

While some customers like the minimal ingredients, others feel it affects this supplement’s value. One verified reviewer says, “All in all this is a good way to take vitamins, but I want a preparation that has more vitamins/minerals in it. So in that sense it’s too expensive for what you get.”

As far as taste goes, the reviews are really split down the middle, with some enjoying the minty taste and others complaining of fishy aftertastes and burping. Reviewer Beth R. struggled with the fishy flavor, commenting, “These are incredibly fishy, and I start tasting and belching the fishy taste within about 15 minutes of taking.”

The Ritual Multivitamin for Men 50+ includes nutrients in dosages specific to the unique needs of mature men. Compared to Ritual’s Multivitamin for Men 18+, this supplement has more vitamin E, vitamin B12, magnesium, and vitamin K2 to support increased needs.

  • More B12, vitamin E, magnesium, and vitamin K2 addresses the increased needs and decreased absorption rate of these nutrients for men over 50. (21)
  • At $1.30 per serving, this supplement is more expensive than their formulation for 18+ and more expensive than many other multivitamins on the market.
  • Older men with a balanced, overall healthy diet may benefit from the extra nutrients provided in this supplement, some of which are hard to get enough of from food alone, like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin K2, and vitamin D.

At $1.30 a serving, it costs more than many multivitamins.
Missing some key nutrients for aging, like calcium and vitamin C

Why we like Ritual Essential for Men Multivitamin 50+

Ritual Essential Multivitamin for Men 50+ has the same ingredients as their men’s 18+ multivitamin but in amounts that support the unique needs of aging. You’ll find more vitamin E (with 67 percent DV) to support a proper immune and inflammatory response, an increase in vitamin B12 (with 667 percent DV) supporting bone health, red blood cell formation, metabolism, and potentially reducing the risk of dementia, additional magnesium (14 percent DV) to support bone, muscle, and cardiovascular health, and vitamin K2 to help direct calcium to bone and away from arteries. (20, 28, 29, 30)

You’ll also find vitamin D, omega-3 DHA, vitamin A, folate, zinc, and boron to support male health through aging. For adults over 50, men tend to have a higher proportion of zinc deficiency than females. The 22 percent DV of zinc added to Ritual Men 50+ Multivitamins can help maintain adequate levels, potentially helping to prevent symptoms like impaired immune function, visual impairments, skin disorders, and even pneumonia. (31

The addition of omega-3 fatty acids also helps support a healthy immune system and heart while playing a crucial role in cognitive health. Diets higher in omega-3 fatty acids are linked to better memory, processing speed, and brain volume in older adults. (32)

While all ten nutrients in this multivitamin support the health of men over 50, it’s important to remember that this supplement is formulated to support a balanced diet, not one deficient in food groups or overall nutrients. With decreased appetite, intake, and absorption often affecting older adults, it’s important to speak with your doctor for additional nutrient needs like calcium, a higher dose of omega-3 fatty acids, or vitamin D. (21)

As part of a subscription, you’ll spend $39 for a month’s supply, making this multivitamin more pricey than many on the market. However, the high bioavailability, traceable ingredients, and third-party testing may make the higher price tag worth it to those who can fit it into the budget.

What customers are saying

With 526 global ratings and an average of 4.1 out of 5 stars on Amazon, Ritual Multivitamin for Men 50+ is appreciated for its quality and effectiveness, but only if you can get past the fishy taste.

“I wasn’t crazy about the taste, but it really made me feel better after only 4 or 5 days,” says verified reviewer J. OB. “ I tried other supplements and vitamins for men over 50 and none helped like these did.”

However, for many, the burping and fishy taste is too much. “I have tried taking them with and without food. Morning, noon or night. I get hours of fishy minty burps,” says reviewer Robert M.

In response to the multitude of fishy taste comments, verified reviewer Dr. K says, “If you take these during or right before eating (which you’re supposed to anyway), you won’t get the fishy burp as bad or at all. Of course if you take any fish oil without eating on an empty stomach, you’re going to taste it…..later.”

Why we like Ritual Essential for Women Prenatal Multivitamin

Ritual’s Prenatal Multivitamin assures moms-to-be that they take a quality and safe supplement for themselves and their baby thanks to rigorous third-party testing and traceable ingredients. Each serving includes 12 nutrients to support your health and fetal development, including vitamins D, E, B12, K2, folate, biotin, choline, iron, iodine, magnesium, omega-3 DHA, and boron.

Supplementing before and during pregnancy is essential to ensuring you get enough nutrients to support your health and the health and development of your baby. Through diet alone, many women do not meet the RDA for minerals such as magnesium, iron, or iodine, three nutrients found in Ritual’s prenatal. (33) One nutrient Ritual is missing that the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends supplementing is calcium, which helps you and your baby develop strong bones and teeth. (34)

Folate and choline are vital to neural tube formation and brain development in early pregnancy. Six hundred micrograms of dietary folate equivalents (DFE) are recommended during pregnancy, and a deficiency could lead to anemia and spinal birth defects. (23) Ritual uses methylated folate as 5-MTHF for 167 percent DV of folate, which is directly bioavailable to both you and your baby, bypassing the need for metabolic activation. (35

This prenatal multivitamin provides choline as well, but only 10 percent of the recommended daily value. The low amounts of some of these nutrients come from a food-first philosophy, counting on you getting most of your nutrition from balanced, healthy meals and counting on Ritual’s prenatal to fill in the gaps. Some foods that are higher in choline include eggs, meat, and even cruciferous veggies. If you struggle with morning sickness, are unable to eat a balanced diet, or have hyperemesis gravidarum, you most likely need a more extensive supplement regimen and should speak with your healthcare provider for personalized recommendations.

Unlike other Ritual vitamins that come in just one flavor, you can choose from mint or citrus-essenced capsules. However, many customers still experience a fishy aftertaste despite the strong mint or citrus scent and flavor. At $1.30 a serving, it may be a bit higher than some other prenatal vitamins and more expensive than their women’s 18+ multivitamin, but the option to use an HSA or FSA account to purchase them and the 30-day money-back guarantee may make buying these prenatal vitamins a sweeter deal.

What customers are saying

Many customers love the effectiveness and quality of these vitamins, giving it an average of 4.2 out of 5 stars with 3,465 global reviews on Amazon.

“I took them for a few months and noticed some solid results, one big one being that my nails were a lot stronger than they had ever been. the pills are easy to swallow and have a pleasant citrus scent,” says verified reviewer McKynlee. “However, the after taste (burps.. I’m sorry but if you’re pregnant you get it) disgusting.”

She’s not the only one who struggled with the fishy burps that lasted a while after taking them, as several reviewers had similar comments.

However, not everyone is put off by the taste. ”I ordered the citrus and they were perfect! I love that they smell like citrus instead of vitamins, I did not realize they taste like citrus too but that is such an added benefit,” says reviewer Michaela. “I did read reviews of people having fish burps when they take this product so I just chose to take them at night time and have had no issues.”

Why we like Ritual Postnatal Multivitamin

Ritual Postnatal includes 15 nutrients essential to your health during the first six months after giving birth and throughout lactation, including vitamins A, C, D, E, K2, and B12, folate, biotin, choline, iron, iodine, magnesium, zinc, omega-3 DHA, and boron.

Biotin, choline, and iodine support higher nutrient requirements during lactation, and while omega-3 DHA has anti-inflammatory benefits for your health, the 350 milligrams included in the supplement can help supply DHA to your breastmilk, supporting your baby’s brain development. (36)

Postpartum nutrition is not only important for lactation but also for your health, as you recover from giving birth, adjust to a new sleep schedule (or lack thereof), and allow your hormones to find their new normal. Studies show that from pregnancy to postpartum, intakes of vitamins E and C decrease, and many women do not meet the RDA for nutrients like vitamin D, iron, and folate. (37) You’ll find each of these nutrients in Ritual’s postnatal supplement; even vitamin C, which is left out of all other Ritual multivitamins, is included at 10 percent of the DV.

During pregnancy, the body often uses excess vitamin D and calcium to support the bones of not just the mother, but also the baby. Postpartum, vitamin D levels often do not increase to what is needed, which is why supplementation is so important. (38)

Like other Ritual vitamins, these come with a minty flavor to make taking them more enjoyable, but some women report that the peppermint in these pills hurts their milk supply. While no clinical trials have reported that peppermint does, in fact, reduce milk supply, in vitro and animal studies support this potential side effect. (39)

On the bright side, if you notice that this supplement negatively impacts your milk supply, the company offers a 30-day money-back guarantee you can take advantage of. The price is the same as their prenatal multivitamin at $1.30 per serving, accounting for the quality, rigorous testing, and highly absorbable ingredients used.

What customers are saying

Amazon customers give Ritual’s Postnatal multivitamin 4.1 out of 5 stars out of 1,043 global ratings.  Many customers love the quality of this supplement and the company’s transparency when taking a vitamin to support their postpartum needs.

“I used Ritual Prenatal and Postpartum vitamins and they are great,” says reviewer Matt E. “They are easy to take and make me feel like I am getting the proper nutrients needed.”

Some customers found that the peppermint oil found in the flavoring had a negative effect on their breast milk supply. Reviewer Kaley C. says, “If your milk supply is [sensitive] to peppermint oil, I’d try another postnatal supplement. This greatly affected my milk supply in a negative way.”

Our multivitamin testing methodology

Multivitamins help support a balanced diet by filling in nutrient gaps where you may fall short. With the excessive number of multivitamins on the market from endless brands, we understand how important it is to know and trust the vitamins you take. We provide reviews that tell the whole story and cover everything from a multivitamin’s ingredients, dosage, purity, efficacy, taste, and customer experience when taking the supplement.

You can learn more about our supplement testing methodology here.

Efficacy—40%

We assign the most weight to efficacy when conducting reviews and rating multivitamins. When you take a multivitamin, you want it to do what it says and nourish your body, no matter what life stage you’re in.

Here’s what we look for:

  • Clinical evidence
  • Calories per serving
  • Dose efficacy
  • Synergistic effects
  • Proprietary blends
Safety and side effects—35%

Supplements may seem harmless, but they can have serious health risks if taken incorrectly, mixed with medications, include ingredients not listed, or are contaminated. We place high value on products that undergo strenuous testing and are transparent in labeling.

We look closely at the following:

  • Reported side effects
  • Third-party testing
  • Manufacturer accreditation
  • Artificial sweeteners
Value—20%

A high price doesn’t necessarily mean a quality product. We look to ensure the product’s value matches the investment so you aren’t wasting your money on a supplement that’s not with the price.

We look at:

  • Price per serving
Customer experience—5%

Not every customer has the same experience with a product, but all experiences are valid. From finding the product to using it, we review common themes that customers experience and report.

Our factors in this rating include:

  • Ease of purchase
  • Shipping and returns
  • Customer support

Is Ritual a clean brand?

Ritual places a significant amount of value on providing high-quality and pure supplements. In addition to testing each batch for purity, identity, strength, and composition, the company completes third-party testing for heavy metals, allergens, and microbes.

Ritual multivitamins also hold a Clean Label Project Certified label, which means they’ve been independently tested for heavy metals, pesticide residues, and plasticizers and meet the benchmarks set by the State of California Environmental Health Hazard Assessment Office’s Proposition 65 list.

What do Ritual vitamins help with?

Ritual makes several vitamins and supplements to fill nutrient gaps in your diet and support a healthy lifestyle. Their multivitamins use a food-first approach, providing only the nutrients that many diets fall short of or are difficult to get through diet alone.

Unlike many multivitamins that are categorized by gender or age group, Ritual supplies eight different multivitamin formulations to address the specific needs of men and women from their teenage years through old age and during pregnancy and postpartum. They also provide various other supplements to help support your gut, skin, sleep, and brain and heart health.
