Avocado Green overview
Organic mattresses appeal to many health- and environmentally-conscious shoppers because they are made with natural and non-toxic materials. The Avocado Green Mattress features certified organic cotton and wool, natural latex, and upcycled steel coils. The mattress is made in the United States from sustainably sourced local materials and is GREENGUARD Gold Certified. (1)
The Avocado Green comes in six sizes and three firmness levels: Firm, Medium, and Plush. The Firm is the standard model for this hybrid mattress. If you prefer a softer mattress, the Medium, pillow-top model is an additional $800, and the Plush model is an additional $1,600 for a queen-sized mattress. Regardless of which firmness you choose, each mattress is compatible with an adjustable base for an additional cost.
Mattress construction
Mattress construction varies slightly depending on which firmness level you choose. For this review, we focused on the Firm model, which is 11 inches tall and features three inches of Dunlop latex with a thick steel coil layer below. The naturally breathable material promotes airflow to help keep sleepers cool. Below, we’ll dissect each layer further, so you know exactly what lies below the surface.
Cover: The cover, made of GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool, offers a luxurious feel. (2) The soft, breathable fibers help wick away moisture to keep you cool and dry at night.
If you choose the Medium mattress, Avocado softens the bed by adding a two-inch Dunlop latex pillow top. For the softest feel, the plush mattress features a three-inch Talalay® latex box top.
Comfort layer: The next layer features three inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex. (3) This latex is made from the sap of rubber trees and earns additional certifications for its pure, non-toxic makeup. (4, 5) The material’s buoyant feel offers excellent body weight distribution to relieve pressure points. Plus, it’s another naturally cooling material to help prevent heat buildup in the mattress.
Support layer: The mattress features a layer of robust pocketed coils. The individually wrapped steel coils are arranged in seven zones to provide maximum ergonomic support and additional pressure relief and promote airflow through the mattress.
Firmness
While mattress brands typically list firmness on their websites, we like to test this factor first-hand to see how it truly feels. We rate each mattress on a firmness scale from one to 10. Since firmness is subjective, we like to include multiple testers in this process to incorporate various experiences into our final rating.
After testing, we gave the standard version of the Avocado Green Mattress a seven out of 10. That’s just above the industry standard for a medium firmness. There was minimal sinkage, with the body staying well-lifted and supported. If you want a softer feel, you can opt for the pillow-top or box-top models of this mattress.
Mattress performance
Firmness may be one of the first things we test, but it certainly isn’t the only measure of comfort. We also analyze how well a mattress performs in critical areas such as pressure relief, support, cooling, and motion isolation. Ultimately, a high-quality mattress should perform well enough in these areas to help you get restful and restorative sleep, which is crucial for your health and well-being. (6)
Pressure relief and support
We love it when pressure relief and support complement each other within a mattress. When these two components are well-balanced, they can keep you comfortable and prevent aches and pains during sleep. Fortunately, the Avocado Green delivers on both fronts.
Research shows that latex foam provides good pressure relief, which was evident in this mattress. (7) We saw minimal pressure buildup when our testers slept on their backs and stomachs. It should provide relief for sleepers in those positions with back and joint pain. However, the firmer feel leads to more pressure buildup when side sleeping, so we wouldn’t recommend this mattress if you spend most of the night on your side.
The buoyant latex also keeps sleepers on top of the bed without excessive sinkage, but the bulk of the support comes from the pocketed coils. Avocado arranges coils of different thicknesses in seven zones throughout the mattress. Firmer coils in the center of the bed help support the back, while more flexible coils support the shoulders and hips. This allows the mattress to adapt to the body’s natural shape and keep the spine in a neutral position.
Cooling
Cooling is another important factor we test since body temperature can significantly affect sleep quality. (8) The Avocado Green Mattress presented good results in this area. Our testers say the mattress felt airy and breathable and noted minimal heat buildup. The organic cotton and wool help promote air circulation and wick away moisture, while the latex also helps dissipate heat.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation refers to a mattress’s ability to prevent movement from transferring across the bed. A lot of motion transfer means you may feel your partner tossing and turning. From our experience testing mattresses, we know that latex typically offers a bouncier feel, so we didn’t have high expectations. Testers say they could feel each other getting in and out of bed and changing positions. However, we’ve seen high levels of motion transfer in other mattresses we’ve tested.
Responsiveness
The Avocado Green Mattress offers a lot of responsiveness. Our team compared it to a trampoline because of how much bounce they noticed. You’ll have no problem changing positions throughout the night if you’re a combination sleeper.
Edge Support
Firm edge support makes a mattress seem larger since you can spread out across the entire bed without feeling like you’re rolling off the side. Edge support can also benefit people with mobility issues by making it easier to get in and out of bed. Avocado’s seven-zoned support system includes reinforced coils along the perimeter. When sitting on the edge, we noticed minimal sinkage. Our team saw the same results when lying near the edge, where they felt well-supported and comfortable.
Cost
The price is likely the first thing you consider when buying a big-ticket item like a new mattress. Our research shows that the average cost of a latex mattress falls between $1,100 and $2,400. We were happy that the Avocado Green Mattress is reasonably priced at $1,999 for a queen-sized bed. Unfortunately, we don’t see this mattress go on sale as often as some competitor latex models, who frequently reduce the price by a few hundred dollars or more.

Who the Avocado Green mattress is recommended for:
Factoring in all our testing results, I feel confident in providing recommendations for who I think is best suited for this mattress.
- The firmer feel and enhanced lumbar support are ideal for back and stomach sleepers.
- Combination sleepers will also enjoy the bounce and responsiveness of this mattress, which help make moving around effortless on this bed.
- Lastly, eco-conscious shoppers will appreciate Avocado’s commitment to the health and safety of sleepers and the environment.
Who the Avocado Green mattress is not recommended for:
We don’t expect any single mattress to work for every sleep style and body type, so next, I’ll mention who may be better off looking elsewhere.
- For side sleepers, the standard firm model of this mattress will cause discomfort in the hips and shoulders. The medium or plush models would be better options. You can also browse our list of the best mattresses for side sleepers.
- It’s also not the most affordable mattress, which likely makes budget-conscious shoppers feel uneasy about the higher price tag.
- Additionally, I don’t think this mattress will be firm enough for heavy-weight stomach sleepers who generally need additional support to help keep their hips lifted and spine aligned.
Expert opinion
We consulted Dr. Shelby Harris for her expert opinion on latex mattresses like the Avocado Green. As a licensed clinical psychologist with a board certification in behavioral sleep medicine, she’s passionate about sleep health.
Dr. Harris says of latex mattresses in general, “Latex mattresses can be a good option for those looking for firm support while also staying cool throughout the night. They are also naturally resistant to dust mites and mold, making them a good option for those with allergies.”
She praised latex mattresses for their material quality and longevity. “In terms of durability, latex mattresses typically outlast many other types. They are known to resist sagging and can maintain their shape for years with proper care.”For back and stomach sleepers, as well as those who weigh more, latex mattresses provide the necessary firmness to keep the spine aligned and help prevent back pain.”
How we rated the Avocado Green mattress
Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches is dedicated to providing thorough, honest feedback on the products we review. That’s why we perform rigorous hands-on testing with each mattress to assess performance in categories such as support, cooling, motion isolation, and customer service. Hover over the icons below for a brief description of each topic or scroll down to read our complete evaluation of each one. You can also read our full mattress testing methodology here.
The Avocado Green’s overall performance was highly impressive, scoring well in almost every category we tested. The motion isolation leaves something to be desired, but you get a cool, comfortable, and responsive mattress in exchange. The nearly $2,000 price may feel high for some. However, it comes with excellent customer service, including an entire year to trial the mattress and a 25-year warranty.

Warranties and policies
Warranty
Avocado mattresses are covered by a 25-year limited warranty, far beyond many competitors, who only offer 10 years. During that time, Avocado will replace your mattress if it shows signs of manufacturing defects, like a visible indentation of at least one and a half inches, physical flaws in the latex foam, and issues with the cover not caused by normal wear and tear.
While this is a solid warranty, I noticed that the company has several requirements to keep the warranty valid. For example, you must rotate your mattress once monthly during the first six months, then every other month after that, to ensure even wear. The larger sizes weigh over 100 pounds, so this may be difficult for some people. You also must unbox your new mattress within 30 days of delivery and place it on a solid foundation.
Trial period
Avocado’s trial period is among the longest we’ve seen, offering an entire year to try your mattress. If you decide you don’t like it during that period, you can return the bed for a full refund (minus shipping surcharges from the initial order and a $99 return fee). Avocado asks that you try the mattress for a minimum of 30 days before deciding.
Avocado has a few stipulations regarding its trial period. It’s only valid for mattresses purchased directly from Avocado and shipped within the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. Additionally, you must follow the same monthly and bi-monthly rotation policy as the warranty. Finally, you can only use the sleep trial once per household. If you decide to return your Avocado mattress, you won’t be eligible for a mattress sleep trial with future purchases.
Shipping
Avocado offers free shipping for the Green mattress within the continental U.S. While the brand doesn’t specify the exact cost, it says there is a shipping surcharge for orders to Alaska and Hawaii. When reviewing other brands, we’ve seen this cost typically around $250. However, when we simulated an Avocado mattress order to Alaskan and Hawaiian addresses, the shipping cost was over $800. That’s a significant upcharge worth considering before purchasing.
On the other hand, the news is much more positive for Canadian shoppers. Avocado has a dedicated Canadian website that offers a subset of its products with free shipping. Free returns are another unique benefit for these customers looking for the best mattress in Canada.
These mattresses can weigh a considerable amount, so Avocado offers optional in-home delivery and setup within the contiguous U.S. and Canada. The cost is determined by the total weight of the products but can go up to $249.
Additional models from Avocado
The Green isn’t Avocado’s only mattress. The brand offers seven additional options, including a more affordable organic mattress, a vegan option, and beds designed for infants and children. I’ll provide a brief overview of a few of the other popular models below.
Avocado Latex
Key product features
Avocado Green vs. Avocado Latex
Made without coils, the Avocado Latex is the brand’s only all-foam bed (for adults). It’s made entirely of pure, organic latex foam with an organic cotton and wool cover.
- Cost: The extra foam in this nine-inch mattress raises the price significantly to $3,299 for a queen, compared to $1,999 for the queen-sized Avocado Green Mattress.
- Materials: The construction doesn’t get much simpler than this: an organic cotton and quilted organic wool cover and three latex layers—a soft comfort top layer followed by two firm layers in the middle and base.
- Comfort and support: This medium-firm mattress doesn’t have the deep sinking feeling you may get from a softer memory foam mattress. The buoyant, springy latex contours your body while staying responsive. Without the springs, this mattress performs better at motion isolation, a highlight for couples.
- Cooling: While many all-foam mattresses tend to sleep warmer than hybrid or innerspring beds, the latex foam in this mattress is naturally cooling. The breathable cotton and wool fibers in the cover also help regulate body temperature.
We recommend the Avocado Latex for:
- Side sleepers will enjoy the softer feel of this mattress as it cradles their joints.
- I also think back and combination sleepers will enjoy the zoned support and natural responsiveness.
- The enhanced motion isolation makes this a better choice for couples who toss and turn frequently.
Avocado Eco Organic Mattress
Key product features
Avocado Green Mattress vs. Avocado Green Eco Organic Mattress
The Avocado Green Eco Organic Mattress still offers high-quality, certified organic materials and sustainable manufacturing at a lower price.
- Cost: You’ll save money by opting for the Eco Organic mattress, which costs $1,299 for a queen. However, instead of a 365-night trial and 25-year warranty, you only get a 100-night trial and 10-year warranty.
- Materials: Like the Green, this hybrid mattress is made with organic cotton and wool, natural latex, and steel coils. However, Eco Organic is made with slightly fewer coils.
- Comfort and support: The Eco Organic offers a medium feel, similar to the pillow-top version of the Green Mattress. Because the same latex is used in both beds, it provides similar levels of comfort and pressure relief. However, fewer coils means the Eco Organic doesn’t quite measure up in the support category, and the coils aren’t zoned.
- Cooling: Thanks to the same cooling materials as the higher-end models, hot sleepers will feel just as comfortable on this mattress.
We recommend the Avocado Green Eco Organic for:
- It’s still a considerable investment, but budget shoppers will appreciate the lower price tag on this mattress.
- The medium firmness level is ideal for relieving pressure points for side and back sleepers.
- Combination sleepers will like this responsive mattress.
Avocado Organic Crib Mattress
Key product features
Avocado Green Mattress vs. Avocado Organic Crib Mattress
The Avocado Organic Crib Mattress offers peace of mind for parents who want to ensure a natural, eco-friendly sleep environment for their children. It’s made with organic materials, earning this bed various health and safety certifications.
- Cost: As expected, it’s more expensive than standard crib mattresses, which you can find for under $100 at big-box stores. However, the $439 price is justified for the higher quality and enhanced safety.
- Materials: The firmer infant side features tightly quilted organic cotton in the cover with a supportive base made from coconut husk fibers infused with latex. When you flip the mattress to the toddler side, you’ll find the organic latex in the top layer above the coconut husk and the cotton base.
- Comfort and support: The infant side offers a supportive, firmer feel, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. (9) As your child grows, the mattress adapts with them, providing a slightly softer toddler side.
- Cooling: Breathable cotton, wool, and latex help prevent overheating at night, keeping your baby or toddler comfortable and safe.
We recommend the Avocado Organic Crib Mattress for:
- As the name suggests, this crib-sized mattress is intended for infants.
- The mattress grows with the child by offering a flippable design with a softer side for toddlers up to four years old.
Avocado Green Mattress vs. competitors
Of course, Avocado isn’t the only brand offering organic mattresses. Many other reputable manufacturers provide alternatives if the Avocado Green Mattress isn’t your best match. The WinkBeds EcoCloud is an excellent choice for side sleepers who don’t want to pay extra for the Medium or Plush models of the Avocado Green. The Saatva Latex Hybrid’s five-zoned support can provide relief for back pain sufferers. The Birch Natural is a similar organic mattress, and you can snag it for a discount as it’s frequently on sale. However, if you want a budget-friendly alternative, we recommend the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep, which is frequently on sale for under $1,000 for a queen-sized mattress.

Avocado Green Mattress vs. Birch Natural Mattress
While the Birch Natural Mattress is very similar to the Avocado Green Mattress, there are some key differences between the two organic beds.
Both Avocado and Birch models are committed to health, safety, and sustainability, and each brand has various certifications in these categories.
The Avocado Green and Birch Natural mattresses have a comparable hybrid construction featuring organic cotton and wool, natural latex, and steel coils. They both use Dunlop latex as well. Our testers ranked both models seven out of ten for firmness. Both beds offer exceptional responsiveness and durability.
Avocado Green’s zoned support can benefit people with back or joint pain and provides more edge support compared to Birch Natural.
Birch’s 100-night sleep trial is significantly shorter than the 365-night Avocado trial. And while the mattresses seem comparably priced, the Birch Natural is on sale more often, typically for 25% off or more, and includes a set of free Eco-Rest pillows. If you need more information before deciding between the two, read our Birch mattress review for an in-depth look at Birch’s offerings.
Avocado Green Mattress vs. Purple
The Purple Mattress is another popular bed but it’s not as similar to the Avocado Green as some other mattresses we tested. That doesn’t mean it’s lower quality—it’s just different. While the Avocado Green is an organic, hybrid mattress, the Purple Mattress is a non-organic, all-foam bed.
The Purple mattress top layer is the brand’s signature GelFlex® Grid. This hyper-elastic layer is incredibly adaptive, responding immediately to your body’s natural shape to provide cradling comfort and support. The grid’s open design also enhances the mattress’s cooling abilities by allowing air to flow freely instead of becoming trapped. Beneath that are polyurethane foam comfort and support layers.
Overall, the Purple Mattress offers a similar firmness level as the Avocado Green, scoring a seven out of 10 on our scale. Our testers noted that the Purple’s grid provided a floating sensation, similar to the buoyancy of latex foam. However, we didn’t find it as bouncy or responsive as the Avocado. Combination sleepers may find it slightly more challenging to change positions on the Purple.
Avocado’s lengthy sleep trial and warranty policies are hard to beat. The Purple Mattress comes with a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty. However, Purple has the upper hand regarding price, with a queen-sized mattress priced at $1,499 versus $1,999 for Avocado Green. For more information, check out our Purple Mattress review.
FAQs
Where can I buy an Avocado mattress?
You can buy an Avocado mattress directly from the brand’s website or one of its partner organic mattress stores. Avocado has an easy-to-use store locator to find out which mattress warehouses near you carry its beds. If you like the personalized sales experience that you get in-store but want the convenience of online shopping, you can also schedule a Zoom call with an Avocado sales representative for a free demonstration.
What is the price of an Avocado Green mattress?
The Firm Avocado Green Mattress costs between $1,399 and $2,699, depending on the size. The price increases significantly if you want to customize the firmness level. The medium version will cost an additional $700 to $1,000, and the plush version adds $1,500 to $1,700.
How long does an Avocado Green mattress last?
With proper use and care, the Avocado Green should last the standard seven to 10 years we expect from high-quality mattresses. (10) The natural latex and steel coils are highly durable. You can help your mattress maintain its comfort and support by placing it on a solid foundation and following Avocado’s recommendations to rotate it once a month for the first six months and then every other month after that.
Does an Avocado Green mattress smell?
The natural materials in the Avocado Green should help prevent off-gassing, a chemical smell emitted by synthetic materials, which is common when unpacking bed-in-a-box mattresses. Fortunately, we didn’t notice any smell with this mattress, nor did most reviewers, while others described it as having a “natural” odor.
