Ritual claims that their protein powder supports the high nutrient demands during lactation and pregnancy, as well as neurodevelopment of the baby, bone health, and muscle building. 

Nutritionally, Essential Protein Daily Shake Pregnancy & Postpartum isn’t all that different from the standard Essential Protein Daily Shake, at least in the macronutrient department. One scoop (30 grams) of the protein powder has 115 calories, 20 grams of protein, 2 grams of fat, 4 grams of carbs, and 3 grams of fiber. The only macronutrient difference, though slight, is that the prenatal protein powder has one more gram of carbohydrates than the standard protein powder from Ritual. This only yields 4 extra calories from the carbs. 

You also get more choline in the pregnancy and postpartum formula—250 milligrams versus 150 milligrams. Choline needs increase during pregnancy (450 milligrams a day) and lactation (550 milligrams a day). (7) Early research suggests that inadequate intakes of choline during pregnancy may increase risk of neural tube defects in babies and prenatal health complications like preeclampsia. Nutritionally, Ritual’s prenatal and postnatal protein powder is a sound choice and can help busy moms-to-be and new moms get the nutrition they need. From personal experience, I know that eating is impossible between nursing and diaper changes and wished for a supplement just like this. However, I also know the nine months of nausea would’ve likely made it hard to drink.

Ritual protein vs. competitors

Ritual Essential Protein Daily Shake is very different from some of the other protein powders we’ve reviewed. Compared to some of the popular whey protein powders, such as those from Sports Research and Transparent Labs, Ritual has less protein and a much higher price point.

Though Ritual is a high-quality supplement, it’s not the right choice for everyone. The whey protein powders from Jacked Factory, Transparent Labs, and Sports Research may work better for those not following a vegan diet and who have higher protein and calories needs. The other protein powders also come in more than one flavor, making it a good choice for those who like to have options. You may also prefer the whey protein powders if you don’t need to avoid dairy and you’re on a tight budget.

Ritual Essential Protein Daily Shake isn’t all that different from other protein powders. The goal of the supplement is to help those struggling to get enough protein, whether due to higher needs or the inability to get the correct amount from whole foods, meet daily needs. 

Protein is an essential nutrient, containing the building blocks of life—amino acids. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs protein. And needs increase during certain periods of life, such as pregnancy, lactation, and aging, as well as when working out to build or maintain muscle. (3)

Ritual protein powder works by supplying the nutrition the body needs to meet goals in a form that’s easy to make and consume. 

Are protein shakes good for pregnancy and postpartum

Good nutrition is essential when pregnant or breastfeeding. Your calorie and nutrient needs increase during these life stages. Though individual nutrition needs vary, you may need an extra 300 to 400 calories and an extra 20 grams of protein a day. (11, 12

Getting enough nutrition is a challenge for some people during pregnancy and after childbirth. Protein shakes can help those in need get the extra nutrition the body demands.

How we test plant-based protein powders

Plant protein is an increasingly popular alternative to whey protein in dietary supplements. It’s made from plant-based sources such as peas, soy, brown rice, and seeds. While not all plant protein sources are complete proteins (containing all nine essential amino acids), most plant protein blends include at least one complete protein source.

To determine which plant protein products stand above the rest, our team developed a custom testing methodology and scoring algorithm. We evaluate plant protein powders across six categories: protein source, completeness of the protein, macronutrient calories per serving, protein per serving, price per gram of protein, and sweeteners.

These categories were developed in collaboration with registered dietitian and doctor of exercise physiology Chris Mohr, Ph.D., RD.

Our plant protein powder scoring methodology is an extension of our broader nutrition product and supplement evaluation criteria. Each product is assigned a score out of 5 for each category we test. These scores are then weighted based on importance and averaged to produce a cumulative score out of 5 for each product, with 1 being the lowest rating and 5 being the highest.

The protein sources in a plant protein powder determine whether it’s a complete protein source. Some plant sources are missing or limited in one or another amino acid, making them incomplete. The source(s)n also determine the calories from protein versus carbohydrates or fats. We evaluate eight plant protein sources: soy, pea, hemp, brown rice, lentil, chia, pumpkin seed, and blends.

To be considered complete proteins, protein supplements have to consistently provide all nine essential amino acids, which are necessary for supporting muscle growth and overall development. Therefore, complete proteins receive the highest marks.

Macronutrient calories per serving–15%

Ideally, most of the calories consumed through plant protein powder should come from protein. However, depending on the protein source and other ingredients, calories can also come from carbohydrates and fats.

Total protein per serving–15%

Research suggests aiming for approximately 25-30 grams of protein per serving to optimize muscle protein synthesis, which can help with gaining or maintaining muscle mass as we age. While daily protein needs vary by individual, based on age, gender, training, goals and the other parts of the diet, 25-30 grams per meal meets the needs of most people. Most plant protein supplements contain around 15-30 grams of protein per serving. However, the quality, types, and combination of plant proteins may determine the ideal quantity, meaning sometimes higher amounts may be beneficial, given the source.

Price per gram of protein–5%

Price is an important factor for consumers and often (though not always) reflects the quality of a product. There are high-quality plant proteins that cost below average and relatively low-quality plant protein products that cost more than average. Because of this potential discrepancy, this category carries less weight in the overall score.
