WinkBeds mattress review: A comprehensive guide

If you’re searching for a luxury mattress for the ultimate comfort, cooling, and sleep experience, check out WinkBeds. With its three mattress options—a luxury hybrid, a premium memory foam mattress, and an eco-friendly model—WinkBeds appeals to a wide range of sleepers. Each bed is handmade to order in the U.S.A. with locally sourced materials and backed by a lifetime warranty.

For our WinkBeds mattress review, we focused on the brand’s classic signature model, The WinkBed. This hybrid mattress features a cooling cover, gel-infused foams, and pocketed coils. With four firmness options, it’s a versatile choice that suits most sleep styles and preferences. Our sleep science experts tested and evaluated The WinkBed’s construction, performance, pressure relief, support, cooling, motion isolation, and more to help you determine if this is the best mattress for you.

Our favorite WinkBeds mattress

The WinkBed is our favorite WinkBeds mattress, thanks to its blend of comfort and support. Gel-infused Hypersoft foam cushions the joints, while a lumbar pad ensures your spine stays aligned. Individually wrapped innerspring coils adapt quickly and provide enhanced support. Plus, multiple temperature-regulating features keep you cool and dry throughout the night.

WinkBeds The WinkBed overview

The WinkBed’s blend of pressure relief, support, and spinal alignment makes it one of the most comfortable hybrid mattresses we’ve tested. Its cover features eco-friendly materials, and high-quality foam and sturdy coils create a supportive core. Multiple cooling features help prevent overheating and keep moisture in check.

This mattress comes in four firmness options: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus. Since it’s a customer favorite, we tested the Luxury Firm model for our WinkBed mattress review. It offers a balanced, versatile feel that accommodates many sleep preferences. Testers say the WinkBed Luxury Firm’s plush feel rivals the best hotel mattresses

Like many other mattresses-in-a-box, The WinkBed delivers right to your door. However, the bed weighs up to 145 pounds, so getting it to your room of choice, unboxing it, and rolling it out may be challenging. WinkBeds no longer offers in-home delivery and setup, so we recommend recruiting a partner to help you.

Mattress construction

As a hybrid mattress, The WinkBed combines two popular mattress materials. Contouring memory foam provides comfort, and thick springs offer responsiveness and support. The WinkBed Luxury Firm has four layers to help you sleep peacefully:

Cover: The cover is made from eco-friendly TENCEL fibers, giving it a soft and plush feel. The breathable, moisture-wicking material also helps keep the bed cool and dry. The cover is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, meaning it’s free of harmful substances. (1)

Comfort layer: The quilted Euro-pillow top layer adds comfort thanks to CertiPUR-US®-certified foams for cushioning and pressure relief. (2) Gel-infused Hypersoft foam also enhances the mattress’s cooling properties.

Transition layer: Another gel foam layer adds stability and prevents motion transfer.

Support layer: Individually wrapped innerspring coils arranged in multiple zones provide targeted support to help reduce back pain and maintain spine alignment.

Firmness

We rate each mattress on a firmness scale of 1 to 10. The higher the number, the firmer the bed. Softness and firmness are subjective, so your experience may differ depending on your sleep style, preferences, and body type. We tested the WinkBed Luxury Firm and rated it between 6.5 and 7 out of 10. This medium-firm feel is best for back and stomach sleepers (3). We think larger-bodied people would also sleep comfortably on this mattress.

The WinkBed is available in three other firmness options to suit even more body types and sleep styles. The WinkBed Softer offers extra cushioning around the joints, making it a good choice for side sleepers. Stomach sleepers and back pain sufferers who need extra support will prefer the WinkBed Firmer mattress. WinkBed Plus is specially designed for people who weigh more than 250 pounds.

Mattress performance

To evaluate a mattress’s overall quality, we test its ability to provide pressure relief, edge support, motion isolation, and cooling.

Pressure relief and support

One of The WinkBed Luxury Firm’s strongest qualities is how well it balances pressure relief and support. Zoned coils provide firmer support in the middle section of the mattress, while the upper and lower portions of the bed are more flexible. Testers say their spine stayed lifted and aligned on The WinkBed, which is important since proper sleep posture helps reduce pain and improve sleep quality. (4, 5)

Back and stomach sleeping testers say they felt excellent pressure relief around their hips and lower backs on The WinkBed Luxury Firm. Although one tester said they felt comfortable lying on their side, our pressure tests showed buildup under the shoulders, hips, and neck in this position. We think most side sleepers will prefer WinkBed Softer for additional cushioning.

Cooling

We’ve all been there, waking up drenched in sweat. Cooling features in a mattress are important because research shows that body temperature regulation can greatly impact your sleep quality. (6) The WinkBed has several features that work to keep you cool all night. The TENCEL fiber cover improves breathability and helps wick away moisture. Below that, gel-infused foams help dissipate heat. Finally, the space between the pocketed coils promotes airflow so heat doesn’t become trapped in the mattress. Overall, we were impressed with how cool and sweat-free we stayed.

Motion Isolation

We conducted several motion isolation tests to see how well The WinkBed absorbs movement, which minimizes how much you feel your partner tossing and turning at night. First, we dropped a weighted ball on the bed. Our seismograph monitor didn’t register small movements but picked up several more considerable disturbances. Then, we placed a full wine glass on one side of the mattress and pushed down on the other side of the bed to observe if the water in the glass moved. While the water sloshed, it never spilled. Based on our testing results, this mattress offers average motion isolation.

Responsiveness

Responsiveness refers to how quickly the mattress adapts as you move around, which is helpful for combination sleepers who change positions. Memory foam minimizes the bounce in this bed, even with the springs below. However, testers say it was still easy to move around, and they didn’t feel like they were sinking into the bed, making it a great mattress for combination sleepers.

Edge Support

Edge support measures how a mattress feels when you sit or lay on one side of the bed. Edge support is important for people with mobility issues or couples who like to spread out. The WinkBed’s edges are reinforced with two rows of thick coils. Testers say they were comfortable sitting on the edge of the bed, but when they laid down, they felt like they would roll off. We measured the height of the mattress before and after sitting on the edge. The bed sunk less than an inch, which indicates strong edge support.

Cost

Hybrid mattresses typically cost between $1,200 and $2,400 for a queen-sized bed. The WinkBed is moderately priced at $1,799. You can also save hundreds of dollars during WinkBeds’ frequent sales. We recommend reading our guide to the best time to buy a mattress to score a good deal.

What customers are saying

The WinkBed earns 4.8 out of five stars from an average of nearly 9,000 reviews on the brand’s website. Finding independent reviews is more difficult since The WinkBed isn’t sold on third-party websites like Amazon. We turned to Trustpilot and Reddit to get real-world user experiences.

Many reviewers love how comfortable the bed is. “My Firmer WinkBed mattress is even better than I expected,” says Lisa S., Trustpilot. “I have significant back problems, and it is difficult for me to get an uninterrupted night’s sleep due to pain and discomfort. The Firmer mattress is like a dream come true and worth the investment.”

Many customers say WinkBeds’ delivery was hassle-free but note the heavy bed is challenging to set up. “We purchased the Luxury Firm King, a very heavy mattress, so getting it upstairs was a bit of a challenge. I am thankful for a strong stepson who helped me do it. The mattress was super easy to lay out on the box springs, and the second we cut the sealed plastic, it started to expand and fully expanded in two to four minutes,” says Todd B., Trustpilot.

A handful of negative reviews say the WinkBed was much firmer than expected or started to sag after only a few months of use. “We spent a lot of time researching what bed would be the best for us. The ease of ordering the bed and delivery was great. However, we feel the bed is too firm for us. Despite being rated for back pain specifically and side sleepers, we are both waking up to reposition and sore in the morning,” Jay K., Trustpilot.

We’ve featured The WinkBed mattress in:

Who The WinkBed mattress is recommended for:

  • Back and stomach sleepers. Balanced comfort and solid lumbar support keep the spine aligned and reduce pressure around the back and hips.
  • Position changes are effortless on this mattress, which appeals to combination sleepers.
  • Back pain sufferers and seniors will enjoy ergonomic features that help reduce pain and edge support, making getting in and out of bed easy.
  • The sturdy springs and resilient foams ensure long-lasting support for heavy-weight sleepers.

Who The WinkBed mattress is not recommended for:

The WinkBed is versatile, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all mattress.

  • While the WinkBed Luxury Firm was too firm for side sleeping, the WinkBed Softer is one of the best mattresses for side sleepers.
  • Budget-conscious shoppers may prefer a mattress under $1,000.
  • Memory foam lovers may like WinkBeds’ GravityLux or another one of our picks for the best memory foam mattresses

Expert opinion

We spoke with Dr. Shelby Harris, a licensed clinical psychologist who’s board-certified in behavior sleep medicine. Dr. Harris provided helpful insight into some of The WinkBed’s key features.

The WinkBed Luxury Firm has a medium-firm feel, which Dr. Harris says is ideal for people who sleep on their backs. “A mattress that is firm and soft is the best option for back sleepers. They’ll want to choose a mattress on the firmness scale in the 5.5 to seven out of 10 range. These sleepers might enjoy a hybrid mattress that combines foam and coil layers for extra support,” she says.

The WinkBed’s multiple cooling technologies work together to prevent overheating, making it a great choice for hot sleepers. “Temperature plays a significant role in sleep quality,” says Dr. Harris. “Our body temperature naturally drops while we sleep and rises again in the morning, aligning with our circadian rhythm.”

Since this temperature fluctuation is crucial for achieving quality sleep, Dr. Harris encourages hot sleepers to choose a mattress with cooling features, like The WinkBed.  “If the temperature is too warm, it can hinder the body’s ability to cool down, leading to discomfort, difficulty falling asleep, or increased sleep disruptions,” Dr. Harris says.

Warranties and policies

Warranty

WinkBeds offers an unbeatable lifetime warranty, covering the mattress for as long as you own it. If you notice any manufacturer flaws or defects, the company will send you a replacement. Imperfections include indentations greater than 1.5 inches caused by everyday use and physical flaws that may cause tearing, foam cracking, or spring issues. To make a warranty claim, you must be the original purchaser and have proof of purchase. You also must verify that you’ve placed the mattress on a firm, rigid, nonflexible base for its entire use.

Trial period

The trial period is important because it gives you time to learn if your new bed meets your needs and preferences. WinkBeds offers a risk-free 120-sleep trial. If you don’t like the mattress for any reason during that time, you can request a full refund and arrange to have it picked up for free. WinkBeds requires that you try the mattress for at least 30 nights before deciding it’s not a good fit.

This policy is limited to one mattress per household. If you return or exchange your bed within the 120-night window, you won’t be eligible for a sleep trial for future products. If you exchange the mattress, you’ll get a 60-night trial for your new WinkBed. WinkBeds also charges a $49 exchange fee for delivery, removal, and recycling of your old mattress. We found this policy confusing since you can return the mattress for free without exchanging it. If you want to swap your WinkBed for a different WinkBeds mattress, it seems more cost-effective to return the bed and order a new one to get free shipping to avoid the exchange fee.

Shipping

WinkBeds offers free shipping and returns within the contiguous U.S. Mattresses are delivered via UPS ground shipping, and depending on your location, it takes about two weeks to receive your new bed. WinkBeds doesn’t currently ship products internationally.

The WinkBed vs. The EcoCloud

The EcoCloud is WinkBeds’ nod to environmentally conscious shoppers who want a mattress made with natural and organic materials. Its hypoallergenic and non-toxic properties provide a clean and healthy sleep surface.

  • Cost: Organic mattresses can come with a hefty price tag, but a queen-sized EcoCloud costs $1,999, only $200 more than the classic WinkBed.
  • Materials: The EcoCloud features an organic cotton and wool cover. Below that, four inches of natural Talalay latex rest on a thick layer of recycled steel coils.
  • Comfort and support: This mattress has a medium feel and scores 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The latex foam provides solid pressure relief and promotes proper spinal alignment (7, 8). Five zones of supportive innerspring coils allow the mattress to adapt to your body’s natural curves.
  • Cooling: The organic cotton and wool fibers bring natural thermal comfort to keep sleepers cool and dry. (9) Latex also sleeps cooler than traditional memory foam.

We recommend the EcoCloud for:

  • Eco-conscious buyers will appreciate the natural and organic materials used in this mattress.
  • The latex foam combines with the coils to create a responsive surface that suits combination sleepers well.
  • Hot sleepers can also stay comfortable thanks to multiple layers of cooling technology.

WinkBeds TheWinkBed vs. competitors

The WinkBed offers amazing benefits, but how does it compare to similar mattresses?

For firmness options similar to the WinkBed but with a more luxurious experience, check out The Saatva Classic. Saatva mattresses include free white glove delivery and a generous year-long sleep trial. However, the extra benefits come at a higher price, and Saatva doesn’t offer sales as frequently as WinkBeds.

DreamCloud is a more budget-friendly option, especially when you can snag a mattress on sale for $665. Like WinkBeds, DreamCloud mattresses come in both hybrid and memory foam options.

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe features advanced cooling technology for hot sleepers, including a cool-to-the-touch cover.

Is The WinkBed good for side sleepers?

The WinkBed Softer mattress is a good choice for side sleepers. The plush Euro-pillow top and pressure-relieving foams provide cushioning under the shoulders and hips, which are common pain points for people who sleep on their sides. Many experts agree that side sleeping is one of the best sleeping positions to help reduce sleep-associated pain and may improve snoring. (10, 11

Is The WinkBed good for back pain?

The WinkBed is an excellent mattress for back pain because the Luxury Firm’s medium-firm feel provides the right amount of support to promote spinal alignment and reduce back pain. (3) A LumbarLayer enhances the support through the middle of the bed. Strategically placed pocketed coils allow the mattress to adapt to your body’s natural curves and maintain proper spinal alignment.

The Firmer WinkBed model may be a more suitable choice for back pain sufferers who like a very firm mattress or have a heavier body type. It’s one of our picks for the best mattresses for back pain because its dense support keeps the body on top of the mattress with minimal sinking.
