When buying a mattress online—especially when it ships to you in a box— it can feel like a gamble. After all, how can you tell if it’s comfortable and high-quality without lying on it yourself?
Luckily, our sleep experts have done that, so you don’t have to. They’ve tested hundreds of the best mattresses in the categories of firmness, support, motion isolation, pressure relief, cooling, and much more to find the very best in beds.
This detailed review will cover every aspect of one bed-in-a-box mattress, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid. Spoiler alert: This is one quality bed.
Key product features
What you should know
Our mattress testers tried out the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid’s “medium” model and found this bed was a true medium-firm. This means it wasn’t exceptionally plush or contouring, but it did feel great when lying on their backs or stomachs. Medium-firm beds can help alleviate back pain, and our reviewers noted the excellent support found in this model. (1)
- Some bed-in-a-box mattresses feel flimsy, but this one feels high-quality and has solid, sturdy feeling edges.
- Considering its quality feel and price of $1,332 for a queen, we think it has a great overall value.
- The medium-firm model we tested feels slightly firm, so it may be best for back and stomach sleepers.
- Lightweight or side sleepers might want to opt for the Soft model.
Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid overview
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is a hybrid mattress made from innerspring coils and memory foam for pressure relief. This bed includes five layers:
- The bottom layer is made of sturdy foam, creating the base and structure of the bed.
- On top of that is the thickest part of the mattress, made up of 760 encased coils to provide contouring, motion isolation, and excellent edge support.
- Then, a one-inch layer of Variflex™ Transition Foam. This layer is only included in the Soft and Medium models, not the Firm.
- Above this is a 1.5-inch layer of comfort foam for some pressure relief.
- Finally, on top is a moisture-wicking quilted top layer, which helps dissipate body heat and adds comfort.
Our mattress testers tried out the Medium model, which includes the Variflex™ Transition Foam layer. Even with this additional foam later, the testers still described it as “a true medium-firm,” noting it “doesn’t feel too plush.”
This medium firmness and “small amount of body sinkage” are precisely why our testers recommend the Medium model for back and stomach sleepers. This level of firmness may help mitigate lower back pain for some sleepers, and managing pain is vital for sleep quality. Sleep quality and back pain have a bidirectional relationship; the more pain you have, the less sleep you’ll likely get, and the less sleep you get, the more pain you’ll have. (1, 2)
“I see people in the clinic who think they have insomnia, but when we drill down, it turns out they don’t sleep well because of pain,” notes Dr. Andrew Spector, a sleep medicine specialist. (2) A bed that isn’t too soft or firm may help stop this cycle in its tracks. (3)
Side sleepers, however, need more cushion for their shoulders and hips. (4) Our reviewers felt the Medium model was “not plush enough for the joints.” One tester added, “I felt comfortable, but it did feel hard on my shoulders and hips, so I definitely wouldn’t recommend it for people with more sensitive joints.” They advise side sleepers and lightweight sleepers to opt for the Soft model.
Another thing to consider when looking at mattresses is their cooling ability. Not only does keeping cool at night feel good, but research shows that a cooler core temperature will help you sleep better and can even further help with back pain (5). This is similar to why it’s harder to sleep when it’s hot outside.
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid does a great job keeping you cool, and our reviewers gave it a 4.5 out of 5 in this category. They did mention that if you sleep especially hot, you might want to add the cooling pillow top for an additional $400, or consider the Aurora Luxe Cooling, which is intended to be a cooling mattress. Learn more about this mattress in our Aurora Luxe mattress review.
While this bed feels bouncy and is great for changing positions throughout the night, the bounce also means it doesn’t have the best motion isolation. The warranty and trial period could also be improved, at 10 years and 120 nights, respectively. These are shorter than some competitors, which offer lifetime warranties or year-long trials.
Considering its high-quality materials (which our testers noticed in its excellent edge support), free shipping, and easy ability to customize this bed with multiple firmness options and sizes, it is a good overall value at $1,332 for a queen, “especially if you can get it for under $1,000 with a coupon or discount,” says one tester.

What customers are saying
We only look at third-party sites to get unbiased reviews. In this case, we’re including some reviews from Amazon for the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.
Overall, customers rate it positively, with a rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars, with 145 reviews.
Verified Purchaser Dan writes, “Wow, this is a nice mattress. I got the medium firmness, and it’s perfect for me at 5’8″ and 150 lbs. Nice and soft but still supportive. I’ve only slept a few nights on it, but it’s a huge improvement over the old boxspring I had. No more pain in my back, neck, and shoulders when waking up.” He adds that the edge support doesn’t work very well for him but seems “well worth the money for the improved comfort” so far.
Another Verified Purchaser, Christine Lisi, says, “Even though this is a bed-in-a-box item, it is very thick in depth, like a store mattress. I got a soft one, and it cradles my body. It’s the best mattress ever. The edges are very firm, so you can sit on the edge of the bed and not slide or roll off. There are no drawbacks; it is just heavy when lifting it onto the bed frame and removing the wrapping. A two-person job.”
Those who rated the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid poorly seemed to dislike its lack of support, and opinions vary widely on how it performs for pressure relief.
Several reviewers on Amazon mention difficulties with the warranty and sleep trial, citing that Brooklyn Bedding won’t honor either for mattresses purchased through a third-party site. This issue with the warranty and trial is worth keeping in mind if you aren’t entirely sold on this mattress and want to test it before committing.

Our Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid experience
Overall, our experience testing the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid was positive. The mattress scored high in multiple categories, including overall support, edge support, overall value, and cooling, where we rated it a 4.5 out of 5. It scored a 5 out of 5 for its bounce and responsiveness. We awarded it a 4 for its quality of materials and trial. The only category where we rated it below a 4 was motion isolation with a 3.5 because there was some definite detectable movement from one side of the bed to the other, so it’s not ideal for sensitive sleepers sharing the bed.
The amount of bounce in this mattress makes it a great option for combination sleepers who change positions through the night. We found the Medium model was most comfortable for back and stomach sleepers, whereas side sleepers would probably do better with the Soft model. Likewise, average to heavyweight sleepers should feel comfortable on the Medium model, and lightweight sleepers will do better with the Soft. Heavier and larger sleepers may fare better on a Brooklyn Bedding Titan mattress; read our full Titan mattress review to learn more.

However, value is not solely determined by the lowest price point. We also determine it by balancing cost and the tangible benefits a mattress provides.
Customer experience—10%
Sometimes, the mattress can be great, but if the overall shopping experience leaves something to be desired, it could quickly put a sour taste in a user’s mouth about the mattress they just purchased. How to choose the right mattress for you
When buying a mattress, consider the following important factors: your preferred sleep position, body type, and budget.
People who tend to sleep mostly on their back or stomach will want to opt for a medium to firm mattress (depending on your preference). This firmer build will ensure that your hips won’t dip down into the bed and should help keep your spine in healthy, neutral alignment. Side sleepers, on the other hand, will need something softer to cushion the shoulder and hips, which will press down into the bed.
Heavier sleepers should also opt for a firmer, more supportive mattress because their body weight will push further into the bed. Lightweight sleepers won’t sink as far into the bed and will likely feel more comfortable on something soft to medium firm.
So, if you’re a heavyweight stomach or back sleeper, opt for something firmer and with extra support, like a bed with innerspring coils. If you’re a lightweight side sleeper, you might love something plush, like a memory foam or hybrid mattress.
That said, a medium-firm mattress is a safe bet for most people. (9) These beds tend to be firm enough to keep the spine aligned and soft enough to help relieve pressure on the joints.
Of course, you’ll want to consider your budget. Traditional innerspring mattresses tend to be the most budget-friendly, followed by all-foam beds, hybrids, and latex mattresses, which cost the most.
