Titan Plus Luxe overview

The Titan Plus Luxe is a 13-inch hybrid mattress that blends contouring foams with robust steel coils to offer balanced comfort and support. Traditionally, mattresses for heavy people land on the higher end of the firmness spectrum, but that’s not the case with this bed. It provides sleepers with a medium feel that’s plush yet supportive. It’s ideal for individuals who prefer a softer sleep surface and couples with differing body types and sleep styles.

It comprises five layers or six if you opt for the cooling cover. The standard model features a quilted gel foam top that quickly adapts to your movements. The gel particles in the foam and the breathable coils at the mattress core can help prevent heat build-up. However, it’s common for heavier individuals to retain more heat, so it still may not be enough. (2

“Excessive heat in the bed and bedroom is a common and serious impediment to sleep,” notes sleep medicine physician, Dr. Andrew Spector of the Duke University School of Medicine. “It’s really important to stay cool to help sustain sleep through the whole night.”

If you’re worried about overheating, you can add the GlacioTex cover for an additional $150 for a queen-sized bed. It’s sewn into the mattress top and can offer unparalleled cooling. The polyethylene fibers in the fabric allow heat to pass through instead of becoming trapped and have proven moisture-wicking qualities. (3)

While the GlacioTex cover gives the mattress a cool-to-the-touch feel, it has one considerable disadvantage: it creates a slippery sleep surface, diminishing the edge support. You may feel like you’ll slide out of bed if you get too close to the edge.

Two more CertiPUR-US®-certified foam layers lie beneath the cover. (4) The first two inches consist of a latex alternative foam called TitanFlex. This layer provides exceptional pressure relief, similar to latex. Beneath that is an inch of responsive transition foam. This TitanFlex foam is the distinguishing feature between the Plus and the Plus Luxe. It offers deeper compression that softens the mattress and cradles the body.

Even with the enhanced contouring, you shouldn’t sink excessively into the mattress or feel stuck. The foam layers remain responsive, adapting quickly to body movements and allowing for easy position changes. These high-quality, high-density foams are also resistant to sagging, helping prevent significant body indentations after sleeping on the mattress.

The innerspring layer below strengthens the Plus Luxe’s durability and longevity. It consists of up to 900 eight-inch steel coils, offering sturdy support for large, tall, and curvy individuals. The brand claims these coils also provide edge-to-edge support. Unfortunately, many customer reviews note a lack of edge support as a major complaint. Less support around the perimeter can make it more challenging to sit on the edge or fully spread out and utilize the entire surface of the bed.

On a positive note, the Titan Plus Luxe impresses in the motion isolation category while offering a springier feel. This makes it an excellent mattress for couples who don’t want to sleep separately to get good rest. (5) Dr. Spector, who wrote Navigating Life with Restless Legs Syndrome, says the bedpartners of people with restless legs syndrome (RLS) and the associated condition of periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS) often struggle with sleep as much as the person with the underlying leg issues.

Heavier-weight folks often experience an increased risk of sleep disruptions, and a mattress that reduces disturbances from a bed partner’s movements may help. (6) All-foam mattresses typically reign as the best in motion isolation, but this hybrid mattress holds its own.

Considering the whole experience, we recommend the Titan Plus Luxe for heavier side and back sleepers. The softer feel provides optimal cushioning around the lower back, shoulders, and hips. It can also be ideal for couples with differing body types as it offers strong support without feeling excessively firm to average and light-weight individuals. However, it will likely be too soft for stomach sleepers with larger body types as their hips may sink in too much, throwing the spine out of alignment.

What customers are saying

The Titan Plus Luxe is commonly bought directly from Brooklyn Bedding’s websites. However, it’s also available on Amazon, which provides insight into real-world customer experiences. While most of the ratings on Amazon refer to the standard Titan Plus model, we were able to pull some specific to the Plus Luxe. It’s also a commonly discussed mattress on Reddit threads, where reviewers mention experiencing improved sleep from the mattress’s comfort and support.

A verified Amazon customer without a nickname listed kept their review simple and to the point, “My partner and I are plus-size people, and this mattress has completely changed our lives. Thank you!”

“I worried about my husband’s lack of sleep,” says another Amazon reviewer, “MargiefromKC.” “We sleep in separate rooms for health reasons, but I knew he didn’t sleep well. I got him a FitBit, which confirmed his lack of sleep. It was way worse than I thought. He has been getting, on average, three hours of sleep a night, so we got him this Titan mattress as a Christmas/birthday gift. Last night, he slept well for over six hours. I hear him singing in the kitchen as I write this, and I know how good he feels. Thanks, Brooklyn Bedding, for helping my husband get a wonderful night’s sleep. At least he considers 6 hours wonderful. I’m looking forward to seeing him clock in a solid 8!”

One Reddit user, “quaaaaal,” says, “I finally decided after research and nervously got the Titan Plus Luxe. My spouse is quite a bit heavier than me, so my biggest worry was support for him while also sleeping well myself. We’ve had it for about a week, and so far, both of us are sleeping better. I’m a side sleeper, and the support is great—it’s not too hard. The motion isolation is surprisingly good. I usually feel a little bounce when getting in/out, but not much else. I’m interested to see how it will hold up, but I’m happy with the choice so far!”

We also found some reviewers who weren’t as happy with all aspects of the Titan Plus Luxe. Dacia R on Amazon says the cooling cover caused more harm than good: “We love our 13-inch mattress. It is comfortable and supportive. We regret the “cooling” topper. It is slippery. The sheets, mattress pad, natural latex, and any human being slide around. It flared up a lot of back pain. I recommend the mattress—and strongly advise against the cooling topper.”

Performance (sleep experience)—30%

A high-quality mattress should feel like it’s designed to provide you with the best sleep of your life. They should also deliver on the promise of a great sleep experience. Our sleep science coaches assess various factors to reflect the functional aspects of the mattress as well as the user’s sleep experience. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Temperature regulation
  • Motion isolation
  • Edge support
  • Technology
Comfort and support—30%

Alongside the sleep experience, comfort and support are just as important for a healthy and restful sleep. Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Firmness
  • Pressure relief
  • Spinal alignment support
  • Customization
Value—20%

Assessing value involves meticulously examining several key factors contributing to a mattress’s worth. A mattress priced within reach of its target audience that surpasses competitors in terms of materials, performance, and support presents a compelling value proposition. However, value is not solely determined by the lowest price point. We also determine it by finding the balance between cost and the tangible benefits a mattress provides.

Customer experience—10%

Sometimes, the mattress can be great, but if the overall shopping experience wasn’t, that could easily put a sour taste in a user’s mouth about the mattress they just purchased. We put in the hours to determine how well the entire process of buying a mattress matches users’ expectations and what options are available when something goes wrong.

  • Warranty
  • Customer service
  • Sleep trial
Health and safety—10%

It’s important to understand that a mattress is more than just a sleeping surface—it’s an environment where you spend a significant portion of your life. We meticulously assess critical aspects of mattresses that may directly impact your well-being and peace of mind.

Titan Plus Luxe Mattress trial and warranty

Beyond the mattress’s performance, we also consider the buying process and customer experience. A solid sleep trial and inclusive warranty can significantly enhance the experience, ensuring you have the time to decide whether the mattress meets your needs and will last for years.

Trial period

When reviewing a mattress brand’s trial period, we like to see a minimum of 100 nights offered. Brooklyn Bedding meets that expectation and then some with its 120-night risk-free trial for all mattresses. During that time, you can try the mattress in your home to ensure it provides the comfort and support you need after repeated use. It takes a few weeks to adjust to a new bed, so the company requests that you give it at least 30 days before requesting a return if you decide it’s not the right fit.

If at any point during that 30- to 120-night period you decide that the Titan Plus Luxe isn’t your ideal mattress, you can email support@brooklynbedding.com to request a return. You’ll receive a full refund minus a $99 return fee. Moreover, if you paid delivery charges to Hawaii, Alaska, or Canada, those are non-refundable.

Warranty

The mattress warranty is another vital policy to consider when selecting your new bed. It can speak volumes to the company’s confidence in its products and help ease your concerns about experiencing any future issues with the mattress. An extended warranty ensures the mattress is protected against defects and will withstand years of repeated use. Heavier-weight sleepers may put more emphasis on this category, knowing that larger bodies put additional pressure on the mattress, which can lead to premature material breakdown or uncomfortable indentations. (6)

Brooklyn Bedding covers the Titan Plus Luxe under a 10-year warranty. It’s not the most robust policy we’ve seen in the industry, with many competitors offering 25 years to a lifetime. However, experts typically recommend replacing your mattress when it’s seven to 10 years old, so it should cover it through its lifespan. (7

The warranty covers the mattress against early wear and manufacturer defects. This includes deteriorating foam, impressions over one and a half inches, and sagging. You must ensure the mattress is supported by a solid foundation, such as slatted wood or metal foundations, solid platforms, or adjustable beds.

How to choose the right mattress for you

Your ideal mattress will depend on various factors, and we’ve outlined some key considerations that can help guide your decision. To learn more, read our guide on how to choose a mattress to help you find the right one.

Firmness

One of the first details we often consider when assessing a mattress is its overall feel. Whether you need a softer or firmer mattress can depend on your body type, preferred sleeping position, and whether you experience chronic back or joint pain.

Side sleepers of all body types typically need a softer mattress to help cushion sensitive joints like the shoulders and hips. On the other hand, stomach sleepers often feel most comfortable on a firmer mattress that keeps their hips lifted and spine aligned. Back and combination sleepers can benefit from a bed that falls somewhere in the middle, offering adequate pressure relief while staying supportive and responsive. (8)

Body type

We all come in unique sizes and shapes, and we should keep that in mind when shopping for a new bed. Body type can significantly impact how you experience a mattress. For example, because heavier-weight sleepers may put more pressure on a bed and sink deeper into each layer, they often perceive mattresses as feeling softer compared to average and light-weight individuals. Therefore, many beds designed with a firmer feel for larger bodies may be less comfortable for folks of smaller sizes.

Material

What lies within the bed also matters. The type and quality of materials can impact comfort and durability.

Memory foam

Memory foam mattresses typically offer a deeper contouring feel as the foams adapt to body heat and pressure. However, these mattresses can sleep hotter and may experience earlier degradation. We recommend looking for a mattress that uses high-density foams with cooling qualities, like gel, copper, or latex.

Innerspring

On the other hand, innerspring mattresses excel at providing sturdy, long-lasting support. They offer a highly responsive, bouncy surface ideal for sleepers who change positions frequently throughout the night. Since the coils allow maximum airflow, innerspring mattresses tend to sleep cooler. A model with zoned support that promotes spinal alignment can benefit back and joint pain sufferers.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses combine the best of both worlds. One or more foam layers offer body-contouring comfort on top, while innerspring coils below add support and durability. Some models come in varying firmness levels, making them highly versatile.

Cooling

A mattress that helps regulate body temperature and prevent overheating can promote higher-quality sleep. (9) If you sleep hot, you should look for a mattress with advanced cooling features, such as gel-infused foam or cooling covers, that may help draw heat away from the body and reduce moisture build-up. Generally, hybrid, innerspring, and latex mattresses sleep cooler because the innerspring system has an open structure that allows for better airflow.

Motion isolation and edge support

We assess motion isolation and edge support in each mattress we review because they can significantly impact the overall performance. A mattress that helps prevent motion transfer from one side to the other can help you enjoy uninterrupted sleep, even if you share your bed with a restless partner, child, or pet. Edge support can also be critical when you don’t get the whole bed to yourself. A sturdy perimeter can allow you to sleep comfortably across the entire bed width. Moreover, it can benefit those with mobility issues by making getting in and out of bed easier.

Cost

Mattresses range in price from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. Determining your budget before shopping can help narrow your search and direct your focus to beds that align with your financial needs. While many luxury mattresses have a higher price tag, you can find plenty of high-quality, affordable mattresses

Titan Plus Luxe vs. Titan Plus

The Titan Plus was the first mattress introduced in Brooklyn Bedding’s Titan collection. Its thinner 11.25-inch profile is designed to provide the traditional heavy-duty, firm mattress feel often sought after by plus-sized sleepers. It supports the body on top of the bed, allowing minimal sinkage. We typically recommend this mattress for heavy-weight back and stomach sleepers who can benefit from the strong support.

The Titan Plus Luxe offers a vastly different experience with its plush, medium feel, which appeals more to side and back sleepers. The softer feel comes from the added TitanFlex foam, which provides deeper compression and more body contouring. The sag-resistant foams and sturdy steel coils maintain adequate support and durability for larger-bodied individuals. However, it can also accommodate some average and light-weight individuals, making it ideal for couples with differing body types.

Both models have even cooling capabilities, featuring gel-infused foam and breathable coils. You can upgrade to the GlacioTex cooling cover with each mattress. One category in which the Titan Plus Luxe has the upper hand is motion isolation, though the Titan Plus outperforms the Plus Luxe in edge support.

As we typically see with Luxe models, the Plus Luxe costs slightly more than the Plus—$1,249 versus $1,599, respectively, for a queen-sized bed. Whether the higher cost is worth it depends on your preference and sleep style.

Titan vs. Big Fig®

Big Fig is another popular choice among plus-sized mattress shoppers. It offers a similar hybrid construction, featuring high-density foam and innerspring steel coils. While both beds aim to provide a comfortable sleep environment for bigger-figured people, they differ in feel and features.

While the Titan Plus Luxe offers a softer experience for sleepers who want extra cushion, the Big Fig is much firmer. It’s even firmer than the Titan Plus, the brand’s firmest model. Instead of a latex alternative, this mattress has a true latex foam layer, which can enhance pressure relief while adding buoyancy to help keep sleepers supported on top of the bed. (10)

With Titan, you can choose between three mattress models that offer different firmness levels, whereas the Big Fig comes in one model with no customization options other than choosing the size.

Cooling is another area worth noting among these competitors. Both mattresses utilize gel foam in the cover and first layer to help dissipate heat. Big Fig has a slight advantage with a layer of perforated latex foam, which can help increase airflow. However, Titan offers the optional GlacioTex cooling cover upgrade, which kicks its cooling performance up a notch.

Each brand has advantages and disadvantages regarding price and customer service. The Titan Plus Luxe is more affordable at $1,599 for a queen-sized mattress compared to Big Fig’s $1,899 price tag. Big Fig offers double the warranty of Titan with a 20-year policy compared to Titan’s 10. The brands even out in the sleep trial category, both allowing customers to try the mattress for 120 nights.
