What you should know
The Cocoon Chill Memory Foam mattress features two layers of high-quality memory foam that balance comfort and support. The cover’s Phase Change Material (PCM) emphasizes cooling and can help prevent overheating at night.
- The mattress offers subtle body contouring, minimal sinkage, and excellent support.
- This affordable mattress becomes even more accessible during sales events when a queen-sized bed is reduced to $699.
- We rated it on the firmer end of the medium-firm scale and think stomach and back sleepers will be most comfortable on this mattress.
- Although the cooling cover isn’t cool to the touch, the material proved effective at helping regulate body temperature and keeping our testers cool while lying on the bed.
Cocoon Chill Memory Foam Mattress overview
The Cocoon Chill Memory Foam mattress by Sealy is an all-foam bed with two memory foam layers topped with a cooling cover. These materials provide balanced comfort and support with a medium-firm feel that can accommodate various sleeping styles. Thanks to its advanced cooling technology and fantastic motion isolation, it’s well-suited to individuals and couples alike.
The Cocoon Chill is a traditional memory foam mattress with convenient online ordering and doorstep delivery as a bed-in-a-box. It weighs about 73 pounds—including the box—which is considerably lighter than many competitor models that can weigh over 100 pounds. The lighter weight can help ease the setup process as you get it to your bedroom and unbox it. You can sleep on the mattress immediately, though it may take up to 48 hours to fully expand. The foams can release an odor when unpacking it, which should dissipate within a day or two, but we recommend ensuring the room is well-ventilated to help this process.

Mattress construction
The Cocoon Chill Memory Foam has a thinner profile with a height of only 10 inches. The robust supportive foam layer makes up most of that height, while the comfort foams make up the rest, with the cooling cover atop it all. Below, we’ll discuss each layer in more detail.
Cover: The cooling cover features Phase Change Material (PCM) that can help absorb body heat to prevent overheating and night sweats. (1)
Comfort layer: This mattress’s comfort layer consists of various CertiPUR-US® certified foams. (2) The Perfect Fit memory foam on top offers pressure relief and airflow to help further regulate body temperature. The thick, responsive foam below excels at adapting to the body and absorbing motion.
Support layer: Six inches of durable memory foam lies at the base of the mattress. It provides sleepers with extra support and adds stability to the bed.
Firmness
Mattress firmness describes how soft or hard a bed feels when lying on it. We rate each model we test on a scale of one to 10, where higher numbers indicate a firmer mattress, though keep in mind that this rating is largely subjective. Our team experienced a slightly firmer feel on this bed, noting that while it contoured the body, it felt hard and offered minimal sinkage. Overall, we gave the Chill Memory Foam a seven out of 10. This lands it within the medium-firm range, which can be excellent for helping relieve back pain. (3)
Mattress performance
Using various tools and metrics, we tested the Cocoon Chill Memory Foam mattress across several critical factors that impact its overall performance. I’ll discuss our findings in each category below.
Pressure relief and support
Pressure relief and support can significantly contribute to overall comfort and help you get restful sleep. A mattress with a good balance of both can help alleviate pressure points on sensitive joints and promote spinal alignment. It can help you maintain proper sleep posture in your preferred position, reducing nighttime back pain and improving overall sleep quality. (4)
We didn’t experience deep cradling when lying on this mattress, but we could feel it contouring the body well. Both testers noted their bodies stayed lifted, and their spines felt aligned. They experienced good weight distribution when lying on their backs and stomachs, noting ideal support and minimal pressure in both positions. However, the firmness led to pressure build-up in the shoulders and hips when lying on their sides. Heavier-weight side sleepers may sink more into the mattress and feel the contouring they need around their joints. Still, lightweight and average-weight individuals could experience discomfort through those shoulders and hips, especially if they have pre-existing pain in those areas.
Cooling
Elevated nighttime body temperature and sweating can lead to poor sleep quality. (5) Various elements within your sleep environment can impact how hot or cool you sleep, your mattress being a considerable factor. With “Chill” in the name, we had high expectations for how this mattress would perform in the cooling category. Thankfully, it didn’t disappoint.
The cooling cover features Phase Change Material designed to help regulate body temperature by absorbing and dispersing heat. (1) Cocoon describes it as “cool to the touch.” It didn’t feel cool to our team, but that didn’t impact the overall performance. We measured the bed’s temperature before and after lying on it for several minutes. Our thermal gun only increased by five degrees, indicating excellent cooling abilities. Hot sleepers can likely find the cooling relief they need in this mattress.
Motion Isolation
Motion transfer indicates how likely you are to feel movement traveling from one side of the bed to the other. Motion isolation can be vital for sleeping soundly if you’re frequently jolted awake by a partner or pet that tosses and turns a lot. The memory foam in the Cocoon Chill did an excellent job of absorbing movement and preventing it from traveling throughout the mattress. We couldn’t feel our partner’s movements as they switched positions and got in and out of bed. We think it would be an excellent mattress for couples.
Responsiveness
A responsive mattress adapts quickly to movement and rapidly rebounds to its original shape after applying pressure. The Cocoon Chill Memory Foam didn’t offer much bounce or responsiveness. Traditional memory foam is known more for its slow-moving material that conforms to the body’s heat and pressure. Changing positions on this bed felt more effortful, which could be a disadvantage for combination sleepers who like to switch up their sleeping position frequently during the night. The hybrid model may be better since coils typically offer more responsiveness.
Edge Support
The Chill Memory Foam offered mediocre edge support. We felt a decent amount of sinkage in the foam when sitting and lying near the edge. However, we didn’t feel like we would fall off, so you could still sleep comfortably near the side of the bed and feel well-supported. Edge support can also impact how easy it is to get in and out of bed. This bed’s low profile and sinkage when sitting may not be the best mattress for seniors and those with mobility issues.
Cost
For many individuals, budget is a driving factor throughout their mattress search. You want a mattress that meets your sleep needs and financial situation. Cocoon offers an affordable price on the Chill Memory Foam that can appeal to many shoppers. A queen-size mattress has a total value of $1,079, but we often find it on sale at a discounted price of only $699. We encourage you to follow our guide to the best time to buy a mattress to ensure you get the best price on your new bed.
We’ve featured the Cocoon Chill Memory Foam Mattress in:
Who the Cocoon Chill Memory Foam Mattress is recommended for:
- We think back and stomach sleepers will feel well-supported and enjoy excellent pressure relief on this bed.
- Hot sleepers should be able to sleep cool and comfortably on the Chill Memory Foam.
- The cooling performance and motion isolation properties make it a great choice for couples.
- Budget shoppers can feel satisfied with a high-quality mattress that costs well below $1,000.
Who the Cocoon Chill Memory Foam Mattress is not recommended for:
- Side sleepers may experience pressure build-up in sensitive joints, which could exacerbate existing pain.
- Because heavier body types often sink deeper into a mattress’s layers, larger stomach sleepers may find their hips sinking too low, throwing their spine out of alignment. (6)
- We think seniors and those with mobility issues could find getting in and out of this bed more difficult than some taller competitor models offering better edge support.
Expert opinion
We asked Dr. Shelby Harris for her opinion regarding Cocoon mattresses and guidance for a good night’s sleep. She brings extensive knowledge and experience as a board-certified behavioral sleep medicine expert.
Dr. Harris says, “Cocoon mattresses boast about adjusting to your body temperature, which sounds nice, but remember that comfort is personal. Always try a mattress out before you commit to it!” This is why we highly recommend finding a brand that offers a lengthy, risk-free sleep trial. Cocoon allows you to sleep on the mattress for 100 nights before deciding if it’s right for you.
Dr. Harris also reminds us that while a comfortable, supportive mattress is essential, many other factors impact overall sleep quality. “A good mattress can help your sleep, but it’s just one part of the bigger picture,” she says. “Pair it with good sleep habits—like winding down before bed—and you’ll be on your way to better sleep.”
How we rated the Cocoon Chill Memory Foam Mattress
Our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches tested the Cocoon Chill Memory Foam mattress in various categories, including material quality, support, cooling, and motion isolation. Based on our experience, we score each category from one to five. You can read our full mattress testing methodology here.
The Cocoon Chill offers exceptional value with its low price tag and quality materials. It provides balanced support and comfort for many sleep styles. Unfortunately, the sleep trial and warranty leave something to be desired, with shorter timeframes than many competitors.

Warranties and policies
Warranty
Cocoon offers a basic 10-year warranty, which meets the minimum we look for in a high-quality mattress. Most experts recommend replacing your mattress when it’s seven to 10 years old, so you should be covered for its entire lifespan with this policy. (7) However, an extended warranty can often indicate a brand’s confidence in how well its product will hold up. Nevertheless, the materials felt durable throughout our testing, so we think they should withstand repeated use.
Cocoon will replace or repair the mattress under this warranty if you experience early deterioration due to manufacturing defects or flaws. They qualify defects as any visible indentations greater than one inch or other physical deficiencies within the cover or foam that don’t result from misuse. Note that the replacement mattress or any repairs are free, but Cocoon states that you may be responsible for transportation costs. We encourage asking about any potential fees upfront before filing a warranty claim.
Trial period
As Dr. Harris mentioned, you want to ensure you can try a mattress out before being locked into it for the long haul. Sleep trials are a standard perk among online mattress retailers, helping ease your worries about buying a mattress you haven’t seen or felt. It can take some time to adjust to and break in a new mattress, so we look for a minimum of 100 nights when reviewing brand policies.
Cocoon meets our minimum requirement with its 100-night sleep trial. If you decide it’s not the right fit, you can return it for a full refund. The company will arrange for someone to pick up the mattress and donate it if possible. If you paired your mattress with a foundation during checkout, you can also return that.
Shipping
Another perk of shopping through Cocoon is that your mattress will ship for free. The order typically takes one to two days to process, and the bed will be delivered in five to seven business days. If you order the Ease Power Base (which costs $999 for a queen) to accompany your mattress, the company offers free white glove delivery. You won’t have to worry about setting up your bed and frame or removing all the packaging material. The delivery team will do all of that for you.
One downfall is Cocoon doesn’t offer shipping outside the continental U.S., including Hawaii and Alaska. If you need your mattress shipped outside the lower 48, you’ll have to shop for a different brand.
Additional models from Cocoon
Key product features
The Cocoon Chill vs. The Cocoon Chill Hybrid
The Cocoon Chill Hybrid is the brand’s only other mattress model. Its hybrid design combines the top memory foam layers with supportive innerspring coils.
- Cost: This model comes at a slightly higher price of $1,389 for a queen-sized mattress.
- Materials: Cocoon keeps the same cover and top two layers of memory foam but swaps out the thick support foam at the base for robust steel coils. The innerspring layer adds two inches for a total height of 12 inches.
- Comfort and support: This mattress has the same medium-firm feel. It also offers similar body contouring and pressure relief from the memory foam layers. The innerspring coils add more bounce, making this model more responsive than the memory foam version. We also liked the thick coils around the perimeter, which increased the edge support.
- Cooling: The cooling is exceptional in this mattress. Cocoon uses the same cooling cover as the Memory Foam, but adding the coils helps maximize breathability.
We recommend the Cocoon Chill Hybrid for:
- This mattress offers exceptional support and comfort for back sleepers.
- The added responsiveness from the coils should help ease position changes for combination sleepers.
- Hot sleepers will enjoy the added cooling effects of the coils, which allow for increased airflow so the mattress can breathe and effectively release heat.
Cocoon Chill Memory Foam Mattress vs. competitors
To conclude our Cocoon mattress review, we’ll compare the Chill Memory Foam model to competitors. Casper’s The One is a similar bed with its all-foam construction, medium-firm feel, and cooling qualities. It offers a similar price point, trial, and warranty. The Purple Mattress distinguishes itself with its highly adaptive and responsive GelFlex® Grid material, making it a superior pick for combination sleepers who want to roll around easily.
While the Chill Memory Foam will serve back sleepers well, the Saatva Loom & Leaf’s targeted back support takes it up a notch. The quilted lumbar zone structure in the cover and the memory foam lumbar crown may help ease pain in the lower back. The Plank Firm is another foam mattress worth comparing. This bed is ideal for heavyweight sleepers seeking enhanced support and durability. Its flippable design offers you the choice of firm or extra firm. You can read more about each of the mattresses in the review links in the chart below.

Cocoon vs. Purple
The Purple Mattress is a reasonably common household name in the memory foam mattress market. Its signature trait is the GelFlex® Grid, which rests between the cover and memory foam layers. This highly adaptive and responsive material makes the Purple Mattress a better option for combination sleepers than the Cocoon. Though the Purple has a bit more bounce, it excels at isolating motion, making it another suitable pick for couples.
Our testers gave the Purple Mattress an identical 7 out of 10 firmness rating as the Cocoon Chill. Its medium-firm feel appeals most to back sleepers who can benefit from the exceptional pressure relief and support we experienced in this position. (3, 8) As it adapts to the body, it helps maintain a neutral spine, which can help reduce back pain. (9)
Like the Cocoon Chill Memory Foam mattress, the Purple Mattress lacks strong edge support. Our testers noted a lot of sinkage when sitting and lying near the edge. On a positive note, it scored highly in the cooling category. The breathable cover and the Grid’s open structure help promote airflow and prevent heat build-up.
While the Purple Mattress offers a comparable overall sleep experience, it’s slightly more expensive at $1,499 for a queen-size bed. However, its sleep trial and warranty match Cocoon’s, offering 100 nights to try the mattress and covering manufacturer defects for 10 years.
Cocoon vs. Casper
Casper’s The One is a memory foam mattress in a price range similar to that of Cocoon Chill Memory Foam. The queen-size model costs $999 at full price and $799 when on sale. This bed also boasts a simple three-layer design. Only the middle layer is true memory foam, while the other two are poly foam. The difference in material gives this mattress a boost in the responsiveness category. Poly foam is known for bouncing back quicker than slower-moving memory foam. These layers help lift the body and align the spine.
The Align memory foam at the core helps the mattress conform to your body’s natural shape. It offers exceptional pressure relief to help soften the mattress through the lower back and hips. This is another foam bed with a medium-firm feel.
Casper’s open-cell foams promote breathability more than traditional foam materials, preventing excessive heat build-up. However, we weren’t as impressed with its overall cooling performance as we were with the Cocoon Chill. Instead, we would describe it as a temperature-neutral feel. If you want a Casper mattress with better cooling features, we recommend The Snow or The Snow Max.
FAQs
Is Cocoon a good brand?
Cocoon has strong roots as a Sealy brand, which has been around for over a century and is well-respected in the mattress world. From our evaluation, we can attest that the mattress materials feel high-quality and durable. These beds are designed and assembled in the United States and are backed by a 10-year warranty.
Does a Cocoon mattress need a box spring?
Cocoon states that its mattresses aren’t compatible with box spring bases. Instead, they need more solid support, like a platform or slatted base, a solid foundation, or an adjustable frame. You also should avoid placing the mattress directly on the floor, which could lead to moisture build-up underneath the bed.
Do Cocoon mattresses have fiberglass?
Cocoon mattresses don’t contain any fiberglass. Instead, the brand uses a rayon and polyester blend material as a flame barrier. This is great news for those worried about the potentially harmful effects of fiberglass, which could irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs if it comes in contact with or inhaled by sleepers. (10) If this concerns you, browse our list of mattresses without fiberglass for more options.
