The 11 best collagen powder supplements of 2024, according to experts

Collagen is the most abundant protein found throughout the body that provides structure and strength to skin, cartilage, muscle, and connective tissue. As we age, our collagen levels gradually decline, leading to wrinkles, loose skin, and achy joints. (1)

Collagen supplements have gained popularity for their potential to counteract these effects. (2,3,4,5) Unlike typical protein powders, which are designed primarily for muscle growth and recovery, collagen powders focus on supporting joint, skin, and hair health. However, due to increasing demand, there are now countless collagen products available, varying in quality

So, how do you choose the best collagen powder? Our dietitians and wellness experts have done the work for you. We’ve reviewed the top options available, scrutinizing key factors, including effectiveness, safety, quality, cost, and ease of use. The list below details our findings to help you determine which one deserves a spot on your shelf.

Editor’s choice

Nutricost Collagen Hydrolysate earned our spot as the editor’s choice for collagen powder because it’s versatile, affordable, and high quality. This budget collagen comes out at $0.43 per serving, but doesn’t skimp on quality measures—like third-party testing.

What you should know

Nutricost provides the best value for a basic yet high-quality grass-fed hydrolyzed collagen product. Each serving delivers 11 grams of collagen, and the products are third-party tested. While four flavors are available, the unflavored is your best bet for versatility and value.

  • Nutricost products have a slightly more noticeable flavor than some other brands but are easily mixed into beverages and food. Plus, the one-pound container option is very convenient.
  • This product is the most affordable option on our list at $0.43 per serving for the 41-serving, unflavored option.
  • It’s best for customers looking for a basic, no-frills formula at a great price.
  • Flavored options contain ingredients like natural flavorings and stevia, which not everyone prefers.
Pros

No artificial additives
Easy to use in multiple formats

Cons

Flavored options use stevia

Why we like Nutricost Grass-Fed Collagen for best budget

Nutricost Grass-Fed Collagen stands out as the best value we’ve encountered for a quality collagen supplement. It delivers a beneficial dose of 11 grams of hydrolyzed bovine collagen in each serving, priced at only $0.43 per serving for the unflavored option—significantly lower than comparable formulas on the market.

Even at its affordable price point, Nutricost places a high priority on ingredient quality and transparency. Each formula undergoes third-party testing to guarantee potency and to detect any potential harmful contaminants. Additionally, the product container prominently displays the nutrition facts for easy reference.

For added convenience and versatility, this product is available in two sizes (4 ounces and 1 pound) and offers four flavors (unflavored, chocolate, salted caramel, vanilla).

If opting for a flavored variety, it’s worth noting that these contain stevia, which may be problematic for some people. Another tip: the one-pound container will last you well over a month, potentially leading to flavor fatigue. Consider ordering smaller sizes of the flavored options to mix it up.

While you can’t beat the value of this great basic formula, people who want a more comprehensive supplement with complementary vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, biotin, and hyaluronic acid may prefer another option on our list.

What customers are saying

Over 100 Amazon customers rate Nutricost’s collagen highly. Reviewers are generally happy with the results and the price.

“I’ve been using this stuff since July 19th, and the difference in my nails is amazing. I think my hair has improved also but my nails have definitely gotten longer and stronger.”

Jessica Glennon, Amazon

Similarly, Rosie R. describes the unflavored option as an “affordable product and great results.”

However, verified reviewer L-ren noticed off-flavors when adding this product to beverages and offers this advice: “I’ve found the best way to mix it with drinks is to first mix it with room temperature water and then add it to my drink.”

Why we like Gainful Grass-Fed Collagen as best unflavored

With its 10-gram dose of hydrolyzed bovine collagen from grass-fed cows, Gainful Grass Fed Collagen is a solid unflavored option.

Each serving also contains 50 milligrams of vitamin C, which may support collagen health in multiple ways. Vitamin C is essential for making collagen and acts as an antioxidant, protecting collagen from damage. (6) Some studies suggest that combining vitamin C with hydrolyzed collagen boosts collagen production in the body. (7)

Gainful’s formula is unflavored, so you can add it to various foods and beverages. We’ve found it mixes well without altering flavor or texture. Plus, this company promises never to include artificial additives or ingredients.

Even more impressive is the personalized support available. With each subscription, Gainful provides customers with 1:1 access to registered dietitians to discuss their health goals.

However, there are a few drawbacks to consider. To order Gainful’s products, customers must start a subscription; one-time purchase options aren’t available. Also, there are only 14 servings in each container, compared to an average of 25 servings per collagen container.

There’s also no indication that this product undergoes third-party testing to verify quality and safety claims.

What customers are saying

According to Trustpilot.com, customers are very satisfied with Gainful’s products and overall customer experience.

“I would highly recommend. It does not have a chalky taste, and mixes well with my almond milk. I have a shake mixed with Gainful’s fiber and collagen every morning to start my day and it keeps me full until lunch.”

Lyndsey Mizell, Trustpilot

If you’re wondering about the value of registered dietitian support, verified reviewer CA shares, “I love that there is a registered dietitian you can easily reach out to with any questions.”

However, some customers complained about receiving too much communication around product personalization, so this might not be a great choice if you already know what you’re looking for and want a more low-touch experience.

What you should know

ProHealth Longevity Collagen offers 20 grams of collagen peptides per serving, as well as vitamin C, biotin, and zinc.

  • ProHealth Longevity collagen includes type I, which is considered the best type for skin support. (8)
  • This product’s price point is on the high end at $2.00 per serving; however it’s formulated with type I, II, III, V, X collagen peptides, making it a more well-rounded collagen supplement.
  • With 20g of collagen peptides per serving, this product will work well for those looking for a higher dose of collagen peptides.
Pros
20 grams of collagen peptides per serving
Beauty supporting ingredients including vitamin C, biotin, zinc, and hyaluronic acid
Made with I, II, III, V, and X collagen peptides
Cons
Expensive
Not pescatarian-friendly
Not for those who want one source of collagen

Why we like ProHealth Longevity Collagen as best for skin

ProHealth Longevity Collagen makes our list as the best collagen for skin thanks to the variety of collagen peptides and skin-supporting ingredients in the formula. Research suggests 2.5–15 grams daily is enough to see benefits, and each one-scoop serving will get you over this amount as there are 20 grams of collagen peptides per sering. (8) You’ll also get a daily dose of vitamin C, biotin, zinc, and hyaluronic acid.

Reserach suggests collagen supplementation can help support skin health. (9) This product is formulated with type I, II, III, V, and X collagen peptides. Type I collagen is the most abundant in the body and supports skin structure. (10) Each serving contains 90mg of vitamin C, which can help support collagen synthesis and support strengthening of the skin. (11) And, research found oral supplementation with hyalauronic acid can help support skin elasticiy and hydration and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles.  (12)

One drawback of this product is the 20 grams of collagen peptides come from a “multi-collagen blend,” which doesn’t list how much collagen comes from each source in the blend. The blend is made with beef, marine, eggshell membrane, and chicken collagen, so if you are vegetarian or have any specific allergy concerns, you’ll want to look for a product with collagen peptides from a single source. This product also contains high doses of biotin (6,670% daily value) and zinc (210% daily value).

At $2.00 per serving, this is one of the more expensive products on our list. However, if you’re looking for collagen peptides with added nutrients and third-party testing readily available, this might be a good option for you.

What customers are saying

ProHealth Longevity Collagen has over 80 ratings on Amazon with an average rating of 4.1. Reviewers said they experience health benefits after taking the product for a while, but some negative feedback customers gave was the product froths like egg yolk and doesn’t dissolve.

“Very fine particulates dissolve really well. I put it in a Nalgene with ice and mio and shake it up a bunch — it tastes great that way.”

Verified buyer Alison

However, some users report an unpleasant taste and issues with the product mixing and dissolving.

“It has no taste & does dissolve quickly in coffee…but it then becomes gelatinous making a gooey skim on the top of the coffee and creating a thick like texture,” said verified Amazon customer BGK.

Sports Research is a leader in organic collagen supplements, using a special eco-friendly process to meet USDA-organic standards. They also have extra certifications confirming product quality and suitability for various diets.

  • At $1.20 per serving, this is one of the more affordable options available.

Why we like Sports Research Organic Collagen Peptides as best organic

Sports Research is credited as the first-ever certified organic option on the market (although there are a few options now available). This certification verifies full compliance with all organic production standards.

Certified organic standards require avoiding specific chemicals, antibiotics, hormones, genetically-modified ingredients, and synthetic additives throughout the entire production process. Producers must also follow humane and sustainable production practices. (13) To meet these standards, Sports Research utilizes a new processing method that, according to their website, uses 70% less water and 70% less energy than traditional methods.

The trade-off is that this results in a product with a somewhat noticeable aftertaste and coarser texture. We’ve found that it doesn’t perform as well in thin, cold-temperature liquids. For best results, stir it well into hot beverages or blend it into your favorite smoothie to make it less noticeable.

Another reason to appreciate this product is the additional third-party certifications obtained by Sports Research to ensure product quality. These include NSF-certified gluten-free, IGEN non-GMO, and Informed Choice.

This level of testing usually drives up costs, but Sports Research Organic Collagen Peptides is surprisingly affordable. In fact, it’s the second most affordable option on our list after Nutricost while still providing a full 10 grams of collagen per serving.

What customers are saying

Sports Research Organic Collagen receives overall positive reviews from close to 500 customers on Amazon. Reviewers are happy with the quality of the product’s ingredients and the benefits it provides.

Verified customer Bianca praises the product as a “game-changer for anyone looking to improve their skin, hair, and joint health” and a “natural and sustainable choice.”

“I love this product so far! From the packaging and texture, to the effects on my skin and joints has been incredible. The information gave me a sense of product integrity…My knees don’t pop like they use to now that I think about it. This is a solid product that I’ve now added to my box of tools.”

Marlon Briscoe, Amazon

Still, other customers aren’t fully satisfied with the taste and texture. D Nelson writes, “First of all it’s NOT tasteless, it’s not horrible either, I can tolerate it if it works. Second, when you pull the spoon out of a hot drink after you stirred it good and you still see lumps and powder in those lumps, I would really have to say, it doesn’t dissolve well. You have to push the back of the spoon against the lumps as you stir and then they dissolve.”

What you should know

Utzy Naturals contains 40 milligrams of UC-II collagen to support healthy joints.

  • This supplement contains Fortigel and UC-II, both clinically researched forms of collagen.
  • Each serving of Utzy Naturals’ collagen powder costs $1.98, making it one of the more expensive options on the market.
  • This collagen powder may be best for people dealing with chronic joint pain or recovering from an injury.
Pros
40 mg of UC-II collagen
5 grams of Fortigel® collagen to support joints
Third-party tested
Cons
Lack of formula transparency
Lower collagen dosage than other options
UC-II not derived from an organic source

Why we like Utzy Naturals Coll-U-Gen as best for joints

Many adults deal with joint pain, particularly with age, due to daily stress on ligaments, cartilage, muscles, and bones.

Supplementation with collagen peptides, alongside a therapeutic exercise plan, may help protect joint function and ease joint pain. According to a 2016 study, 40 milligrams of UC-II daily may help reduce joint pain and stiffness related to knee osteoarthritis pain. (14

Each serving of Utzy Naturals Coll-U-Gen  contains 40 miligrams of UC-II® undenatured type II collagen, derived from chicken sternum, which research shows may be clinically effective in reducing joint pain, especially post-exercise. (14) Additionally, the product contains 5 grams of a  proprietary collagen called Fortigel®. Fortigel contains type III collagen, which is part of healthy cartilage tissue.

Generally, we’re wary of proprietary ingredients due to the lack of transparency in their formulations. However, research suggests that supplementation with Fortigell® can help reduce knee joint pain related to activity. (15) And, a few small studies indicate that Fortigel® supplements helped study participants strengthen knee cartilage and reduce joint pain and may help repair ligaments. (16) (17)

Utzy Naturals Coll-U-Gen costs $1.98 per serving and you’ll get 24 servings per container. This is one of the more expensive products on our list, and you wont’ even get a full months worth of collagen per purchase. We do like that this product contains clinically researched, efficacious dosages of Fortigel and UC-II, which may contribute to the higher price.  If you like this supplement,  you can save a bit of money by signing up for a subscription which will lower the cost to $1.68 per serving.

What customers are saying

Utzy Naturals Coll-U-Gen has garnered 75 Amazon ratings with a 4.4/5-star rating. Reviews are mostly positive, with verified buyers reporting improvements in joint health and pain.

“The product is easy to mix into coffee/smoothies [with] no taste. [I] love that it has Fortigel for the joints. Just started using it, but will continue to use it. Great quality.”

SJB, Amazon

Similarly, Hunter W., who received free product for a review, shared, “These collagen peptides are great. Good quality and seem fresh. They are tasteless and easy to take. I add these to my coffee and they don’t change the taste of it. They dissolve easily, so there are no weird grits and textures as well.”

Reviewers who report stirring the product into hot beverages and smoothies indicated it is easy to mix and dissolves well.

However, some customers point out that this product is on the more expensive side.

Blue shared,  “I try many collagen products. I do like this, it is a little expensive, but [I’m] willing to keep trying this in future.”

What you should know

Ora Aloe Gorgeous is a vegan collagen-boosting powder, designed to support your body’s production of collagen. This product contains no collagen, making it suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

  • This product is plant-based, made with ingredients like pea protein, acerola cherry extract, and coconut sugar.
  • At $2 per one-scoop serving, it’s more expensive than many other products on the market.
  • The supplement is third-party tested with the Certificate of Analysis (COA) accessible on the website.
  • This product is best for those who follow a vegan or vegetarian diet.

Why we like Ora Organic Aloe Gorgeous as best collagen booster

Since ingestible collagen supplements are made with animal sources, like bovine (cow), porcine (pigs), and piscine (fish), vegans and vegetarians have to support collagen production in a different way. Ora Organic Aloe Gorgeous is plant-based, making it a great choice for vegans and vegetarians who are concerned about their collagen levels. (It’s important to note that since this product contains no collagen, it won’t work for those looking to increase their collagen intake.)

The product contains 90 mg of vitamin C, a nutrient that helps your body form collagen in bones and supports healing. (18) One review found preclinical studies that show  vitamin C may help increase type I collagen synthesis, though more research is needed. (19)

One thing to be cautious of: This product is made with ”Ora Organic Aloe Gorgeous Blend,” so while the ingredients used are listed, there isn’t transparency about the amount of each in the product. Ora Organic does gets bonus points for conducting third-party testing and sharing reports with customers on the website.  Each batch is tested for potency, heavy metal content, microbial contaminants, and pathogens. Annually, Ora’s products are tested for supplement fact verification, pesticides, and allergens.

Each serving of Ora Organic Aloe Gorgeous costs $2.00, which is one of the highest-priced products on our list. If don’t follow a plant-based diet and are  looking to increase your collagen intake, you can definitely find a less expensive alternative. However, this is a good option for those who can’t consume typical animal-based collagen supplements and are concerned about supporting collagen production in the body.

What customers are saying

More than 500 Amazon reviewers score this product a 4.5/5 stars,  with most praising its taste and benefits.

“I have tried a LOT of collagen boosters since I’m a plant-based eater. Aloe Gorgeous is by far my favorite. I notice a big difference in my hair and nail growth. It also helps with inflammation when I run, which is everyday! Texture might be hard for some but I just mix and chug.”

Sara C., Amazon

Nancy C. praises the taste, sharing, “I absolutely love this powder. I mix it in with my berries smoothies and it tastes so good and I have really noticed it is improving my skin, softer and clearer looking.”

However, some reviewers, like jdizzle, report difficulty with mixability. “I too, like most, was having a hard time getting it down from trying to mix in water, coffee, protein shake and well…anything really – until I went to their website. Mix a scoop of collagen mix with a small amount of water and press with the back of a spoon to make a paste. Then, pour the mixture into whatever you like. It is a game changer.”

  • This product has four flavor options, one of which is unflavored.
  • At $1.33 per one-scoop serving, Wellah is one of the more affordable products on the market.
  • This collagen powder is best for those seeking the beauty-supporting benefits of collagen peptides.
Pros
Four flavor options
5 types of collagen
Includes biotin and hyaluronic acid
30 servings per container
Cons
Sweetened with stevia
Brand cites 12 grams of collagen per serving, but according to the label one serving contains 15 grams

Why we like Wellah as best collagen powder for women

This collagen supplement comes in three flavors as well as an unflavored option, so you can find one that works best for how you want to take it. Research suggests 2.5–15 grams daily is enough to see benefits, and the serving size of one scoop daily will provide you with a 15-gram dose. (20)

This product contains five types of collagen, and collagen from multiple sources, which is different than many other products on the market. Additionally,  you’ll get beauty-forward ingredients including 5,000 mcg of biotin and 120 mg hyaluronic acid per serving. Hyaluronic acid supplementation has been linked to improving skin moisture. (21) It’s worth noting that biotin deficiency is rare, and because of this, there is no recommended daily allowance (RDA) guideline. Suggested adequate intake (AI) of biotin is 30 mcg daily for those 19 years of age and older. High biotin intake can affect certain lab results, like hyperthyroidism, so if you’re taking this supplement, be sure to consult with your doctor. (22)

Unlike most collagen powders, which provide you with collagen from one source, Wellah contains 13.5 grams of grass-fed bovine collagen peptides, 0.5 grams of hydrolyzed chicken collagen peptides, 0.5 grams of marine collagen, and 0.5 grams of grass-fed bone broth.

At $1.33 per serving, this is one of the lower-priced collagen supplements on our list. For this price, we like that you get 14g of protein per serving and have four flavors to choose from.

What customers are saying

Nearly 60 Amazon reviewers have weighed in on this product rating it a 4.3/5. Most buyers praise the taste and collagen and protein content.

“I’m so happy with this multi-collagen/hyaluronic product. I have simply been mixing it into my coffees and it tastes chocolate-y delicious. Supplementing with good quality collagen has made a world of difference in my skin, hair and nails. Give yourself some time, and be consistent to notice a difference. This collagen is a blend from different sources and I like that. It also has biotin and apple cider vinegar, which is so cool.”

Rencat, verified Amazon customer who received free product in exchange for review

Cathy C. agrees, sharing, “I look forward to my shakes and it has made it easy to keep in my routine.”

However, some reviewers don’t like the taste as much as others, and even report not liking how the unflavored option tastes.

Reviewer Waleska Santiago reports being disappointed with the taste, describing the experience with the product as, “It’s absolutely disgusting I couldn’t even force myself to drink it.”

Why we like Transparent Labs Collagen Hydrolysate as best for athletes

Transparent Labs is our pick for best for athletes because it’s versatile enough to work for most people’s goals. Starting around age 30, your body’s natural collagen production begins to decline, which can increase your risk for athletic injuries. (1)

The unflavored option contains just one ingredient: grass-fed bovine hydrolyzed collagen.

Bovine collagen comes from the bones of cows and provides collagen types I and III, which match the collagen types commonly found in our skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. (1)

Hydrolyzed collagen means the larger collagen protein is broken down into smaller components, called collagen peptides. And it’s collagen’s specific peptides that account for much of the benefits. Hydrolyzed collagen also mixes better with water than other forms and  may be easier to digest. (23)

Grass-fed collagen matters to many consumers. While no studies prove grass-fed beef is better for health than standard beef, grass-fed meat typically contains higher levels of beneficial fats, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. (24) Additionally, sourcing from grass-fed cattle helps this product align with Paleo and Whole30 diets.

While there’s no standard recommended amount of collagen, research suggests that 2.5–15 grams per day are safe and may improve skin and joint health. (20) Transparent Labs Collagen Hydrolysate falls in this range, providing 11 grams in each serving. Additionally, one review found that supplementing with 5–5 grams of collagen may be beneficial for supporting joint health and reducing joint pain in athletes. (4

In terms of quality assurance, Transparent Labs conducts third-party testing to verify ingredient quality and safety, with results readily accessible to customers on the website.

Despite its high quality, this product remains one of the more affordable options on our list, priced at $1.17 per serving.

Our testers found this supplement easy to incorporate into their routines. It dissolves easily in water and goes virtually unnoticed.

If you prefer flavored supplements, a chocolate option is available, featuring natural flavors and stevia. Testers described it as reminiscent of watered-down chocolate milk, especially enjoyable when mixed with almond milk.

What customers are saying

Transparent Labs products are generally well-reviewed on their own website, but third-party feedback is scarce.

The company received a mid-range score on Trustpilot.com due to some complaints related to shipping and packaging. However, customers are generally satisfied with the product quality.

“I’ve tried their protein and pre-workout and loved both of them! Their customer service is beyond incredible. What sold me initially was the minimal and high-quality ingredients in everything. I seriously love this brand.”

Jill Ledesma, Trustpilot

  • However, it’s higher in calories and sugar content than unflavored options.

Why we like Promix Chocolate Collagen Powder as best chocolate

According to experts, it can take around eight weeks to start seeing results from collagen supplements, and keeping up with intake is key to maintaining those benefits. (25) Considering this, it’s important you find a product that you actually enjoy. Promix is one of the better-tasting options overall and a solid choice for chocolate lovers.

At $1.89 per serving, it might seem expensive, but each two-scoop serving offers a hefty 21 grams of collagen. Research suggests 2.5–15 grams daily is enough to see benefits, so switching to one scoop daily is an option to save money while still giving you a solid 10-gram dose. (20)

Promix is made from grass-fed, hydrolyzed collagen mixed with organic fair-trade cocoa and organic coconut sugar to create a delicious Dutch chocolate taste. It can be seamlessly incorporated into coffee to create a cafe mocha flavor or used as a hot chocolate powder when mixed with steamed milk.

It’s worth noting that the recommended two-scoop serving adds 110 calories and six grams of sugar. So, if you’re trying to cut down on sugar or keep your calorie intake low, sticking to one scoop might be a good idea.

Finally, Promix gets bonus points for conducting third-party testing and sharing reports with their customers on their website.

What customers are saying

“Favorite thing to mix in with my cup of coffee every morning to keep me feeling full and energized. I’ve tried mixing in lots of collagen powders, protein powders, protein drinks, etc. with my coffee… and well, this is THE best if you’re looking for something with minimal additives/sugar, amazing flavor, and dissolves well.”

Amanda, Amazon

Cathy Clearly agrees, sharing, “I look forward to my shakes and it has made it easy to keep in my routine.”

Nevertheless, taste is subjective, and reviewer Evelyn I. reports being disappointed with the taste, describing it as “almost tasteless with a hint of cocoa flavor.”

Why we like Naked Nutrition Collagen Peptides Protein Powder as best natural

Naked Nutrition Collagen Peptides Protein Powder is as simple as it gets, with just one ingredient: grass-fed hydrolyzed bovine collagen.

It’s not the only option boasting a pared-down ingredient list, but Naked Nutrition’s collagen is unique because it comes from European cows. Most other brands source collagen from South American cattle.

According to the website, European sourcing means a higher-quality, easier-to-mix formula. While the reason isn’t clear, our testing confirms it blends very well in beverages without any aftertaste.

Whether from Europe or South America, grass-fed cows are raised closer to their natural diet, potentially improving nutrient diversity in the final product and reducing exposure to harmful substances. (24

Additionally, this straightforward formula caters to diverse dietary needs. It’s sugar-free, with only 35 calories per serving, and is soy-free, non-GMO, and certified gluten-free.

Naked Nutrition conducts third-party testing, but they don’t provide official lab reports to customers.

Overall, this product is very well-liked by customers and offers good value at just $0.70 per serving for nine grams of beneficial collagen. As a bonus, the packaging has an appealing aesthetic that would look good on any kitchen counter and contains a generous 60 servings.

What customers are saying

Naked Nutrition Collagen Peptides Protein Powder  is highly rated on Amazon, with over 1000 reviewers. Customers appreciate its versatility, ease of mixing, and health benefits.

“The purest collagen supplement I’ve tried… using the product daily for many months and I am super pleased! The powder is very fine and granulated. Doesn’t clump and mixes with virtually anything.”

Andrew B., Amazon

John T. credits Naked Nutrition’s collagen for relieving joint pain. “It is amazing how much better my knees and shoulders feel after several years of varying degrees of pain and discomfort. You have to be patient, though. It’s not a quick fix or miracle cure. It took about three months of using it daily before I began noticing improvement. Now I’m back to moving some pretty good weight in the gym, and I can hike distances without any problems. I include it in my supplement regimen every day. Naked Collagen deserves the full five stars! Oh, and the taste? I can’t even tell it’s in my smoothies.”

Among the few negative reviews are minor complaints about packaging defects and digestive discomfort due to sensitivity to beef products.

What you should know

Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Advanced Lean includes many ingredients aimed at helping people manage their weight, including a generous dose of 16 grams of collagen from ten diverse sources. Not all of these ingredients have strong clinical support, but many customers are happy with their results.

  • Our testers found the flavor mild, but overall, it worked better blended into smoothies or baked goods than water.
  • At $2.20 per serving, this is the most expensive product on our list.
  • This collagen powder may be best for customers looking to boost weight loss efforts, who can tolerate the ingredients included.
Pros
10 types of collagen to support various areas of the body
Appealing cinnamon flavor
Additional ingredients included to support weight management
Positive customer reviews
Third-party tested
Cons
Lacks transparency into proprietary blends and internal studies
More expensive than average
Not all ingredients have strong clinical support

Why we like Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Advanced Lean as best for weight loss

Ancient Nutrition packs a lot of ingredients into its Multi Collagen Advanced Lean powder that may appeal to people looking to manage their weight.

First and foremost, each serving provides a substantial 14 grams of protein. Getting enough protein during weight loss can help manage hunger and improve long-term weight loss outcomes. (26,27

The protein in this product comes from a proprietary Multi Collagen Complex made from 10 diverse whole-food sources of collagen, including egg, marine, and bovine. This unique combination delivers a range of nourishing amino acids and essential minerals like calcium and phosphorus.

Additionally, this product contains a proprietary fat-loss blend with cinnamon and ashwagandha, purported to enhance weight loss. However, supporting studies are not easily accessible. While both ingredients have long histories in herbal medicine, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states it’s unclear whether they aid in stress management, appetite control, or fat loss. (28,29

Finally, probiotics and vitamin C are also included in this formulation.

Overall, this product offers a lot, but whether these extra ingredients are beneficial is clinically unknown. They’re also expensive—this is the most expensive product on our list. Furthermore, multi-ingredient products pose a higher risk of interactions, so it’s important to talk with your doctor before taking them.

That said, many customers are happy with this product, and our reviewers were happy to see that it is third-party tested for quality and safety.

Our testers said the cinnamon flavor was mild, but didn’t taste great with just plain water—it’s definitely better mixed in smoothies or baked goods. One of our testers also noted it remained grainy when mixed in thin liquids, even after stirring multiple times.

What customers are saying

Over 130 customers have rated this product on Amazon. Many are happy with the benefits they’ve seen from using this product.

Verified Amazon customer Adriana writes, “I love the products from this brand, I wanted to give this one a try since I always use the regular protein, but this was great, love the taste and that it helps with my cravings.”

“I liked everything about this product. I add it to my coffee every morning, the cinnamon flavor is great! I lost 2 pounds in the first week. I have bought my 2nd container.”

Georgette, Amazon

Among the negative comments were complaints about the flavor and difficulty mixing this product into beverages. It’s definitely one that will do best in a blender.

How we test collagen powders

We’re dedicated to offering recommendations we genuinely believe will improve your daily life. This means meticulously analyzing each product from multiple angles to ensure we provide you with trustworthy and realistic suggestions. Check out our full supplements testing methodology for insights into how we approach this process. From ingredient quality, safety, taste, and more, here’s how we applied these methods to this piece.

Learn more about our collagen scoring methodology.

Collagen type—35%

There are three main types of collagen (I, II, and III), each offering different health benefits and being present in different parts of the body. Type I is the most abundant and is crucial for skin, bones, and tendons. Type II is primarily found in cartilage, and Type III is important for skin and blood vessels. Collagen supplements that include all three types are valued more highly because they provide a broader range of benefits, supporting overall skin health, joint function, and connective tissue strength.

Collagen source—30%

The source of collagen is important because different animal sources can vary in their effectiveness for specific health benefits. Marine and porcine collagens are particularly noted for their efficacy in improving skin elasticity and reducing joint pain, which are common reasons for taking collagen supplements. Products that use these sources or a blend that includes them are rated higher because they are more likely to deliver the desired benefits effectively.

Here are a few we consider:

  • Bovine
  • Porcine
  • Ovine
  • Marine
  • Blend
Hydrolyzed—20%

Hydrolyzed collagen is rated higher because it has been broken down into smaller protein chains, known as collagen peptides, which are easier for the body to absorb and use.

Price per serving—15%

We consider the cost per serving to assess whether the product offers good value for money while delivering an effective dose of collagen.

Our factors in this rating include:

  • $.30-.$.99 per serving
  • $1.00-.$1.49 per serving
  • $1.50-.$1.99 per serving
  • $2.00+ per serving
Sweeteners—10%

The type and amount of sweeteners used in collagen can impact taste, caloric content, and health effects. We consider the sweeteners to ensure that the product meets preferences for taste while aligning with dietary needs.

Here are the ones we consider:

  • Sugar
  • Dextrose
  • Honey
  • Agave
  • Stevia
  • Maltrodextrin
  • Erythritol
  • Monk fruit
  • Sucralose
  • Aspartame
  • Xylitol
  • Acesulfame

What is collagen?

Collagen is a protein your body makes to support connective tissue and skin health. It’s often called the “glue” of the body, strengthening tendons, cartilage, ligaments, bones, muscles, and skin structures.

Like all proteins, collagen is built from amino acids. It’s uniquely rich in three amino acids-glycine, hydroxyproline, and proline. While nearly 30 different types of collagen have been identified, five are most abundant within the body:

  • Type I: Mostly found in skin, bone, teeth, tendon, ligaments.
  • Type II: Primarily in cartilage (i.e., most meaningful for joint health).
  • Type III: Common in muscle, skin, and blood vessels.
  • Type IV: Forms the protective layers of multiple organs and tissues (including the gut).
  • Type V: Principle component of the placenta.

Our bodies make collagen from the nutrients in our diet. Unfortunately, aging reduces our ability to produce collagen. At the same time, aging and environmental factors like smoking, excess sugar intake, and sun exposure gradually break down existing collagen stores.

We don’t know exactly how collagen supplements can help minimize these effects. However, experts believe they help replenish the raw materials needed to build collagen while also stimulating collagen production.

It’s also important to know that collagen is not a complete protein. It lacks one of the essential amino acids, tryptophan. This means you shouldn’t rely on it as your main protein source. Combine collagen with a diet rich in other protein sources like dairy, fish, chicken, eggs, or vegan-friendly options.

How to choose the best collagen powder

Consider the following when choosing the best collagen powder supplement:

  • Your goals: For general skin health, look for options with at least five grams of type I and III. For joint health, find one with a higher dose (10-15 grams) that includes type II collagen, if possible.
  • Collagen form: Hydrolyzed collagen, also called collagen peptides, is the best option. In this form, the larger protein bonds have been broken into smaller, easier-to-digest components, which improves the amount your body absorbs. Hydrolyzed powders also dissolve best in liquids, making them easy additions to your favorite beverages.
  • Collagen source: Bovine sources (e.g., from cows) are the most studied. However, recent reviews suggest fish sources may be best for improving skin hydration. Whichever you choose, look for full transparency in how ingredients are sourced. Grass-fed, organic, and sustainable options are often preferred.
  • Ingredient quality: Look for options with minimal, high-quality ingredients—supplement brands often stuff extras into their products you don’t want or need. Choose brands that avoid artificial ingredients or untested bonus ingredients.
  • Third-party testing: Choose a product that has been tested by a third-party lab for ingredients and potential contaminants so you know what you’re getting.
  • Cost and taste: Most studies show that collagen supplementation takes eight weeks or longer to show positive effects. Choose an option that you enjoy, and that fits into your long-term budget.

Benefits of collagen powder

Research around collagen’s potential benefits is ongoing. Although much remains to be understood, small studies suggest promising applications in various areas of the body.

Skin, hair, and nail health

The most common reason people want to take collagen supplements is to improve the appearance of their skin, hair, and/or nails.

A 2023 review examined collagen supplements’ effects on skin aging across 26 studies, which included 1721 men and women aged 21 to 65+. (3) The study findings indicated that participants taking oral collagen supplements saw greater improvements in skin hydration and elasticity than their counterparts who received placebo treatments.

Improvements were seen despite the source of collagen (e.g., bovine vs. chicken vs. fish); however, those who took the supplement longer (more than eight weeks) saw the greatest improvement. Dosages ranged from 0.4 grams to 12 grams.
As for hair and nails, one small study of 88 people noted improvements in hair thickness among participants taking 450mg of collagen supplements from eggshell protein. No improvements in nail health were observed, though an older study of 22 participants found 2.5 grams of collagen improved nail strength. (30, 31

Joint health

As a key component of cartilage and ligaments, collagen may help improve joint health and function.

A comprehensive review of 12 studies revealed that individuals who supplemented with 5 to 15 grams of collagen over a span of 12 to 24 weeks reported reduced joint pain during exercise and decreased reliance on alternative therapies. Moreover, the review observed increased collagen production during exercise, particularly at doses of 15 grams. (4

A more recent review examining the impact of various collagen forms on joint health found that participants reported less joint pain after six months of consuming hydrolyzed collagen supplements at a daily dosage of 10 grams. (5

If you’re looking to reduce joint pain, check out our best joint supplements.

Bone health

Cartilage is abundant in bones. The natural slowing of collagen production during aging may contribute to losses in bone density, increasing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.

A small 2021 study showed long-term supplementation of collagen in a 5-gram daily dose helped reduce bone mineral density losses in post-menopausal women. The researchers think collagen might be helpful for keeping calcium in your bones and affecting how bone cells work. (32

How much collagen should you take?

Research shows that a daily dose of 2.5–15 grams of collagen peptides is generally safe and effective. (20) If you experience unwanted side effects such as bloating from a higher dose of collagen, you can still benefit from taking a low dose. The dose of collagen that’s best for you can depend on your health and needs, as well as the type of collagen.

Collagen dose for skin

In one study, a daily dose of just 1 gram of fish-derived collagen led to improved skin elasticity, less wrinkling, and improved skin hydration in women ages 40 to 60 with sun-damaged skin after 12 weeks of supplementation. (33) Another study found that a daily dose of 10 grams of fish-derived collagen led to a 35% reduction in wrinkles and a 20% improvement in cheek skin elasticity after 12 weeks in women ages 45–60. (34)  One meta-analysis of studies found that doses of different types of collagen, ranging from 372 mg to 12 grams a day, led to various improvements in skin health. (3)

Collagen dose for hair growth

One study found that a dose of 300 mg of fish collagen may help prevent hair loss and support hair growth when taken alongside taurine, cysteine, methionine, iron, and selenium. (35) Another study found that a daily 8 gram dose of collagen combined with vitamins B5, B6, and zinc also led to improvement in hair health after four weeks, and even more so when followed by a daily maintenance dose of 300 mg of collagen with B complex vitamins, cystine, methionine, iron, selenium, and hyaluronic acid for 12 weeks. (36)

However, more research is needed to determine how much collagen supplementation on its own impacts hair health.

Collagen dose for joint pain

Studies have found that anywhere from 5–15 grams of collagen daily can help relieve joint pain, especially during exercise. (4, 5)

Potential side effects of collagen supplements

Collagen supplements typically have few negative side effects, though this varies by person. Some people may be allergic to certain types of collagen, or rather its source, such as fish, beef, pork, or egg. Otherwise, you may experience mild symptoms from consuming a high dose of collagen such as bloating, nausea, flatulence, and an upset stomach. (37) A high collagen dose may also cause your stomach to feel heavy or very full.

Collagen supplements are also not regulated by the FDA, so it’s best to purchase one from a reputable company that conducts third-party testing, to ensure there are no unsafe contaminants that could cause negative side effects.

FAQs

What brand of collagen is the most effective?

Brands that provide 2.5 to 15 grams of collagen peptides per serving and conduct third-party testing of their ingredients will be the most effective and reliable options.

What collagen do doctors recommend?

Doctors will consider your individual health goals and the reputation of the collagen brand before suggesting the best option for you.

Who should take collagen?

People who are looking to improve their skin, hair, or nail health, alleviate joint pain, or support their tendons (such as athletes) may want to consider taking a collagen supplement.

Who should not take collagen?

Collagen powders are potentially unsafe for people allergic to fish, beef, pork, chicken, or egg. They also don’t align with some vegan, vegetarian, Kosher, or Halal diets. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should consult with your doctor before taking a collagen supplement.

Does collagen powder really work?

Based on some clinical studies, many experts believe collagen powders show promise in providing numerous health benefits. However, more research is needed to say for sure.

What is the best form of collagen to take?

Hydrolyzed collagen (also called collagen peptides) is most preferred. This is produced by breaking the larger collagen protein molecule into smaller peptide components. These smaller units may be easier for your body to digest. They also dissolve better in liquid, which makes them easier to incorporate into your diet.
