Best luxury cold plunge: Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge Pro
Key product features
What you should know
The Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge Pro stands out for its exceptional performance, durability, and below-freezing temps. It’s a great top-of-the-line choice for both indoor and outdoor use.
- This is the heaviest cold plunge tub we’ve tested, at 345 lbs without water and an additional 80 lbs with the chiller, but it’s also the most durable. Our product testers noted that while it’s difficult to initially set up because of its weight, the tub’s built-in casters make it easy to roll around.
- While the Cold Plunge Pro’s durable design allows for outdoor use, the tub’s chiller should not be used when the outside temperature reaches 32° F or below, and it should be drained or stored inside during extended periods of below-freezing temps.
- Sun Home’s Cold Plunge Pro is the best option for those looking for an unparalleled cold plunge experience and ultimate durability.
- The tub is 6.5 feet long, and its two vents need 15-27 inches of clearance to allow for proper operation, so you need adequate space for it.
Why we like Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge Pro as best luxury
If you want the ultimate cold plunge tub, consider the Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge Pro. This luxury cold plunge tub features impressive performance, a high-quality build, and an aesthetically pleasing design.
The Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge Pro cools water to as low as 30° F—the coldest temperature offered by any cold plunge tub on our list—thanks to the tub’s powerful one-horsepower chiller. The advertised maximum temperature for this tub is 55° F, providing a wide range of temperatures that’ll meet most cold plunge users’ needs.
Our product tester first did a session at 46° F for several minutes, then tried a two-minute session at 33° F. They noted that quite a bit of ice formed in the tub at 33° F, and that while it was incredibly cold and challenging to endure, they really enjoyed it and were looking forward to using it again.
Weighing 345 pounds when empty, the Sun Home Cold Plunge Pro is the heaviest cold plunge tub our team has tested. The chiller weighs another 80 pounds. The tub is delivered curbside outside your home, so we recommend having the means to move it or hiring someone to do so. It took four men on our team to lift the tub off the shipping pallet. But the Cold Plunge Pro does come shipped in one piece and with built-in caster wheels, making it easier to move into place from there. Our product tester did note that you’ll likely need another person to help you roll it.
The Sun Home Cold Plunge Pro is heavy for a reason. Our product tester said it’s very well-built, with a sturdy, stainless steel interior and weatherproof exterior. They rated its durability an impressive 5 out of 5 stars.
The rest of the setup is quick and easy, according to our product tester—just make sure there’s a power outlet nearby. The tub’s operation was fairly intuitive, and it came with clear instructions. It took our team 35 minutes to fill it with water.
While the Cold Plunge Pro’s durable design allows for outdoor use, the tub’s chiller should not be used when the outdoor temperature reaches 32° F or below, and it should be drained or stored inside during extended periods of below-freezing temps.
Our product tester described the tub as “super easy” to drain and maintain. The tub has a built-in cleaning and filtration design—with a 20-micron filter, ozone injection sanitation system, and UV sanitation chamber—which helps keep maintenance to a minimum. Sun Home Saunas says you’ll need to replace the water and sanitize the tank once a month and clean the filter every two weeks, with residential use.
According to Sun Home Saunas, the Cold Plunge Pro operates at “minimal decibel levels,” for a quieter cold plunge experience.
This cold plunge tub is also pretty roomy, measuring 6.5 feet long. There are two vents that need 15-27 inches of clearance for proper ventilation, so given that and the tub’s size, you’ll need adequate space for it. Our tester noted that it measures 47 inches long internally, with plenty of room to stretch your legs out. They said it’s a great cold plunge tub for people of all heights, and that it’s also easy to get in and out of; though another product tester preferred using a small step stool to help them get in and out.
As one of the most luxurious cold plunge models on the market, Sun Home’s Cold Plunge Pro has a sleek and appealing design, with colorful interior and exterior LED lighting. The tub’s control panel is easy to use, according to our product tester. There’s also a padded headrest for comfort. However, the tub does not come with an app or Wi-Fi to allow you to control it from a distance, and it does not come with any accessories like some high-end cold plunge tubs.
While it’s one of the most expensive cold plunge tubs on the market at $9,499, our product tester says it’s worth the money, rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars for value.
There are no third-party reviews currently available for this product, making it difficult to rate customer experience and satisfaction. Our product tester, however, says they’ve used Sun Home Sauna’s customer service a few times before and have found them helpful and quick to respond.

Best indoor cold plunge tub: The Plunge
Key product features
What you should know
After rigorous 30-day testing, the Plunge ice bath stands out for its exceptional build quality, ease of assembly, and user-friendliness. It offers an effective muscle recovery solution without the need for complex installation, making it a top choice for fitness enthusiasts.
- One of our lead product reviewers considers it one of the best ice bath tubs for anyone who regularly participates in muscle recovery.
- You have to keep the Plunge plugged in at all times. As a result, your electric bill may increase.
- You only have to replace the water about once every three months.
- The Plunge holds 75 gallons of water, less than almost every other cold plunge tank on our list.
Why we like Plunge as best indoor
Our team tested the Plunge for over 30 days. We used it immediately following our long workouts and on our rest days to help promote muscle recovery, It earned four out of five stars overall, with high marks for assembly, build quality, durability, ease of use, and value.
In fact, one of our lead product reviewers, who has been testing fitness equipment and recovery products for over eight years, considers it one of the best ice bath tubs for anyone who regularly participates in this type of recovery.
“Not all data supports that outcome, though, with one very recent study suggesting cold water plunging post-workout may attenuate hypertrophy,” says Chris Mohr, Ph.D., RD. (1) ”More data are certainly warranted to replicate (or refute) these findings and other health outcomes.”
Made with premium acrylic and high-quality fiberglass, The Plunge can cool water down to as low as 39° F. It doesn’t require any plumbing. All you need is a garden hose to fill it and a 110-volt outlet—which is standard in most homes—to plug it into.
The Plunge also features a reinforced metal base to enhance its durability. It’s equipped with an ozone sanitation system, a 20-micron filter, and a circular filtration system to help keep the water clean. You only have to replace the water about once every three months. Plus, if you have an Apple phone, you can control the tub via The Plunge app. Our product reviewer noted that this level of convenience is what allows him to take ice baths consistently.
You do have to perform regular maintenance, though it’s not difficult. Plunge recommends doing the following each week:
- Adding 3-4 tablespoons of Sirona oxidizer
- Wiping the water line and jets
- Cleaning the drain strainers weekly
Additionally, you have to keep The Plunge plugged in at all times. As a result, your electric bill may increase. However, according to Plunge’s website, the tub uses 4 kilowatts per day when used in a 72° F environment with the water temperature set to 45° F. This equals about $1 per day.
The Plunge holds 75 gallons of water, less than almost every other cold plunge tank on our list. Even so, you’ll be able to get a full-body plunge experience more easily than you would in your bathtub. Most standard bathtubs only hold about 40 gallons of water.
The base model starts at around $4,990, which is on the lower end for an advanced cold plunge. It fits individuals up to 6 feet tall and cools the water by 2°-4° per hour. If you’re taller than 6 feet and/or live in a hot climate, consider upgrading to the XL model. The XL model costs $6,990, offers an extra 6 inches of legroom, and can better handle high usage.
An optional heater is also available for an extra $600 for those who live in cold climates. The heater can help prevent the pipes from freezing if stored outdoors, throughout the colder months.

What customers are saying
The company Plunge has mixed reviews on Trustpilot. Some customers and gym owners have been pleased with Plunge’s products, while other customers have been disappointed with broken parts and poor customer service.
A few gym-goers who left Trustpilot reviews were pleased with their experience using a Plunge tub at their gym.
“My current gym has a Plunge, and it’s been a game-changer for my fitness routine. It has significantly alleviated soreness from both workouts and running. Additionally, it has positively impacted my mental well-being, leaving me less anxious and more energized throughout the day,” wrote Jessy C.
However, quite a few Plunge buyers cited difficulty getting customer service to help them, especially with repairs.
“Your Plunge will break on you and it will be a challenge to get fixed!” wrote Trustpilot reviewer Chris M.
Another Trustpilot reviewer, Shay, agrees, saying, “This is quite the investment and the customer support team is just the worst. We’ve had nothing but issues with them.”

Best cold plunge for small spaces: Nordic Wave Viking Tub
Key product features
What you should know
The Nordic Wave Viking Cold Plunge Tub is designed for those with space constraints, offering a unique vertical design that allows for deep submersion up to the shoulders of individuals as tall as 6 feet 5 inches. Its efficient insulation, easy maintenance, and spa-like color options make it an attractive choice, albeit at a premium price, for users prioritizing compactness and simplicity in their recovery regimen.
- Along with the tub’s insulated lid and 0.75 horsepower chiller, the 2-inch foam-insulated walls help keep the water as cold as 38ºF.
- At just under $6,000, we couldn’t find many reasons to justify such a high price tag since it doesn’t offer as many features as the Plunge or the Chilly Goat Alpine.
- Individuals up to 6 feet 5 inches will have plenty of room to submerge up to their shoulders.
- It contains a quick-drain valve that connects to any garden hose.
Why we like Nordic Wave Viking Cold Plunge as best for small spaces
The Nordic Wave Viking Cold Plunge may be the best cold plunge tub for you if space is a limiting factor. Unlike cold plunges that resemble bathtubs, the Nordic Wave Viking is vertical, so you crouch in the chilled water instead of lying or reclining in it. Despite the slim footprint, individuals up to 6 feet 5 inches tall still have plenty of room to submerge up to their shoulders.
The Nordic Wave Viking Cold Plunge Tub comes in three spa-like colors: Arctic White, Charcoal Gray, and Slate Blue.
A matching step stool, included with your purchase, allows you to get in and out of your cold plunge pool safely.
Along with the tub’s insulated lid and 0.75 horsepower chiller, the 2-inch foam-insulated walls help keep the water cold. The insulation also helps prevent the plastic shell from sweating. The lowest the Viking can go is 38° F, which is on par with most other cold plunges on our list.
To keep the water clean, the stainless steel chiller contains ozone filtration and sanitation systems. It requires access to a 120-volt outlet, which is standard in most homes. Maintenance for the tub is simple—you’ll just need to change the filter about once a month. Replacement filters from Nordic Wave’s website cost around $45.
Draining the tub is also straightforward. It contains a quick-drain valve that connects to any garden hose. With this hose connection, you can direct the water away from your outlet or other electrical components.
At just under $6,000, the Nordic Wave Viking Cold Plunge Tub is pricey. Since it doesn’t offer as many features as the Plunge or the Chilly Goat Alpine, we couldn’t find many reasons to justify such a high price tag. But if you don’t have room for a larger cold plunge and don’t mind spending the extra money, the Viking can be a worthwhile purchase.

Best inflatable cold plunge: Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge
Key product features
What you should know
The Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge stands out for its exceptional portability, quick setup, and dual hot/cold functionality, paired with military-grade durability and smart app controls. It’s an adaptable choice for both indoor and outdoor use.
- It maintained its shape even after our team members left water in it for two weeks.
- When the tub is deflated and stored in the bag, it’s about the same size as a small duffel bag.
- It’s over 6 feet long when inflated, so you need adequate space for it. However, it takes just two to three minutes to inflate this tub.
Why we like Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge as best inflatable
If you don’t want a cold plunge tub that’s a permanent fixture in your home, consider the Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge. It’s over 6 feet long when inflated, so you need adequate space for it. However, it takes just two to three minutes to inflate this tub, which comes with an air pump.
Weighing just 15 pounds when empty, the Sun Home Cold Plunge is ultra-portable. Plus, it comes with a carrying bag. When the tub is deflated and stored in the bag, it’s about the same size as a small duffel bag. If you want to pack this tub in the car, though, you’ll also have to consider the size of the chiller. It’s 21 inches long, 16 inches wide, and 22 inches high and weighs 88 pounds, so it will take up valuable space in your trunk.
The Sun Home Cold Plunge features military-grade drop-stitch material. This material is common in inflatable objects because it’s puncture-resistant and holds its shape. After testing the tub for several weeks, our staff rated its durability 4 out of 5 stars. Compared with other inflatable tubs we’ve tested, the Sun Home Saunas one felt the sturdiest. It maintained its shape even after our team members left water in it for two weeks.
Sun Home Saunas claims this tub can hold individuals up to 6 feet 8 inches. Our product testers find this to be true. They range in height from 5 feet 4 inches to 6 feet, and each fit in the tub with room to spare. They even noted that two shorter individuals should be able to sit in it comfortably. We rated it 5 out of 5 stars for ergonomics.
The Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge cools water to as low as 37.5° F. But unlike most other cold plunges, the Sun Home Saunas Cold Plunge can also warm water up to 104° F. If you want the flexibility to take hot or cold baths whenever you please, it could be a solid choice.
“While the research surrounding hot water immersion and performance recovery is mixed, it has been shown to induce some benefits related to neurodegenerative diseases and vascular function,” adds Jen Roper, Ph.D., CSCS. “So, this cold plunge provides an added benefit over some products with the option to take a hot bath.” (13, 14, 15)
It also offers high-tech features we haven’t seen on any other inflatable cold plunge we tested. For example, this tub has a timer so you can time your cold water immersion experience. And it syncs to a mobile app that lets you control the water temperature and timer settings from your phone.
One drawback our product testers noted is the location of the valve. Because it sits a few inches up from the bottom, some water will remain behind when you drain it. Our reviewers had to tip the tub over to empty the last of the water. This shouldn’t be an issue if you already have the tub outside. But if you use it inside, you’ll have to take it outdoors to dump the last of the water.

Best outdoor cold plunge: Polar Monkeys Brainpod 2.0
Key product features
What you should know
The Polar Monkeys Brainpod 2.0 stands out as the best outdoor cold plunge tub, praised for its acrylic construction that withstands corrosion and UV damage. It offers versatility as both a cold plunge and a hot tub, with ease of setup and smart app control for a seamless outdoor wellness experience.
- The testers appreciated this tub’s straightforward setup process. Once it was in place, all they had to do was plug in the chiller and fill the tub with a garden hose.
- You can get a lot of value out of the Brainpod 2.0 if you enjoy cold and warm baths, as you won’t need to find room for both an ice tub and a hot tub.
- The acrylic construction makes the tub ideal for those who need to keep their cold plunge outdoors permanently.
- Compatible with the Tuya mobile app, available on the Android and Apple stores, allowing you to control the temperature remotely.
Why we like Polar Monkeys Brainpod 2.0 as best outdoor
The Polar Monkeys Brainpod 2.0 is our pick for the best outdoor cold plunge tub because it consists of acrylic. This construction makes the tub ideal for those who need to keep their cold plunge outdoors permanently.
Our team product testers appreciated this tub’s straightforward setup process. Once it was in place, all they had to do was plug in the chiller and fill the tub with a garden hose. They also liked that the hose connection allowed them to drain the water wherever they wanted,” making it almost double as a rain barrel, to reuse and recycle the water, when it’s time to drain the product,” says Mohr.
Polar Monkeys doesn’t provide the Brainpod 2.0’s water capacity. However, the company says the tub weighs about 600 pounds when full. Since a gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, we estimate the tub can hold about 85 gallons.
At 67 inches long and 31.5 inches wide, the Brainpod 2.0 is one of the largest tubs on our list. The chiller adds a couple of feet to the tub’s overall size. If you have a tight space, consider a smaller option or choose a vertical cold plunge instead.
Like the Sun Home Cold Plunge, the Brainpod 2.0 doubles as a hot tub. Its hottest temperature can reach 102° F. You can get a lot of value out of the Brainpod 2.0 if you enjoy cold and warm baths, as you won’t need to find room for both an ice tub and a hot tub.
The Brainpod 2.0’s compatibility with the Tuya mobile app allows you to control the temperature remotely. The Tuya app is available on Android and Apple devices. Additionally, the insulated cover helps keep the temperature consistent. However, the cover is sold separately for $349.

Best cold plunge for tall people: Ice Barrel 400
Key product features
What you should know
The Ice Barrel 400 is an economical and space-efficient cold plunge solution, ideal for indoor use or mobile setups. It caters to users up to 6 feet 6 inches and 300 pounds, though durability is an issue when it’s exposed to outdoor elements.
- Our product reviewers like the Ice Barrel 400’s small footprint because it can fit more seamlessly into tight spaces.
- Our team doesn’t foresee the Ice Barrel 400 lasting more than a couple of years if stored outside.
- With its vertical design, the Ice Barrel 400 can fit people up to 6’6 and 300 pounds.
- The non-toxic, BPA-free plastic material is sturdy and non-porous, which helps keep oils and other debris from entering.
Why we like Ice Barrel 400 as best for tall people
With its vertical design, the Ice Barrel 400 can fit people up to 6’6” tall and 300 pounds. Weighing 55 pounds and requiring no electricity, the Ice Barrel 400 can also be an excellent choice for those who may need to move their cold plunge tub around frequently.
Our product reviewers like the Ice Barrel 400’s small footprint because it can fit more seamlessly into tight spaces. And if you want to save both space and money, you’ll likely appreciate that it’s thousands of dollars cheaper than the Nordic Wave Viking.
The non-toxic, BPA-free plastic material is sturdy and non-porous, which helps keep oils and other debris from entering. After testing it, however, we had concerns about its durability.
Our team doesn’t foresee the Ice Barrel 400 lasting more than a couple of years if stored outside. The material resembles what you’d find on plastic outdoor storage units. Those units tend to fade, warp, or crack over time from exposure to the sun and fluctuating temperatures.
Unlike the more advanced cold plunges we reviewed, the Ice Barrel 400 requires you to add water and ice or frozen water bottles manually. It’s not insulated, and our reviewers don’t think the water would stay cold enough for more than a day or two. If you live somewhere warm and keep the barrel outside, it may not stay cold for more than a few hours; however, Ice Barrel offers insulation in their 300 model. Lastly, given its 105-gallon capacity, that’s a costly and wasteful endeavor, draining and refilling the tub regularly for clean, fresh water.
We do think it’s suitable for indoor use, though. The Ice Barrel 400 has a drainage valve on the bottom that connects to a hose. As long as you can direct the hose to a bathtub or sink, you shouldn’t get water everywhere. But given its 105-gallon capacity, draining and refilling the tub regularly can be a costly and wasteful endeavor.
The Ice Barrel 400 comes with a step stool. But if you’re short, you may still need help getting in and out of it. Our lead product tester is 5 feet 4 inches, and she needed to hold someone’s hand to enter and exit the barrel.
What customers are saying
There are only a handful of reviews on Trustpilot for Ice Barrel.
One reviewer, Lido B, wrote, “I ordered the original ice barrel, didn’t get cold enough, I live in south Florida, I had it in my balcony.”
Another Trustpilot reviewer was displeased with Ice Barrel’s customer service and said they waited months after ordering the barrel.

Best portable cold plunge tub: Inergize Health Cold Plunge Tub
Key product features
What you should know
The Inergize Cold Plunge Tub sets the standard for portability and convenience in cold plunge therapy. It offers unique features like dual temperature control, a deep design for full submersion, and simplified water maintenance, making it a great choice for those seeking comfort and versatility.
- The extra cushioning can help make your cold water immersion therapy more comfortable on your backside.
- Inergize includes a four-month supply of sanitizing solution and a micron filter to keep the water clean.
- One of our testers is 5 feet 4 inches and couldn’t straighten her legs all the way. However, she did appreciate how deep the tub is.
- The Inergize Cold Plunge Tub can chill or heat the water. It can go down to 37° or up to 105°.
Why we like Inergize Cold Plunge Tub as best portable
We have a few inflatable cold tubs on our list, but we consider the Inergize Cold Plunge Tub the most portable option. The tub only weighs 25 pounds, and the chiller weighs 60 pounds—much lighter than the other cold plunge tubs we’ve tested.
The Inergize Cold PlungeTub offers several features that others don’t, like a padded bottom. The extra cushioning can help make your cold water immersion therapy more comfortable on your backside.
Plus, you only have to replace the water once every three to six months. Other inflatable tubs require changing the water every two to three days. Inergize includes a four-month supply of sanitizing solution and a micron filter to keep the water clean. You do have to replace the filter and add more solution to the water every week. Still, these tasks are much simpler, cost-effective, and resourceful, than dumping and replacing all the water every few days.
Perhaps the most enticing feature of the Inergize Cold Plunge Tub is its ability to chill or heat the water. It can go down to 37° F and up to 105° F. However, our reviewers noticed condensation buildup on the chiller, the tub, and the hoses when they changed the temperature.
Our expert product testers say this cold plunge tub can inflate or deflate within two to three minutes. It takes another 15 minutes to fill the tub to its full capacity of 80 gallons.
The chiller is Wi-Fi enabled, and we were able to control it via the Inergize mobile app. Our testers noted that the temperature increased or decreased by about 10° per hour.
A drawback they pointed out is the tub’s 51-inch length. One of our testers is 5 feet 4 inches and couldn’t straighten her legs all the way which really limits its useability for many. However, she did appreciate how deep the tub is. At 30 inches high, it’s the tallest cold tub we reviewed. Even though she had to bend her knees when testing it, her legs were still fully submerged.

This is a durable and luxurious choice for serious wellness enthusiasts.
- Made in collaboration with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, the Alpine is built to last. The exterior comprises an all-weather cabinet, and the chiller sits inside the unit.
- While pricey at $8,495, the Chilly Goat Alpine can provide a luxurious ice bath experience. It comes with non-slip flooring, dual-flow jets, and built-in seat and armrests.

- The Alpine uses UV filtration, which requires less maintenance than ozone filters.
Why we like Chilly Goat Alpine as best hot and cold
While pricey at $8,495, the Chilly Goat Alpine Glacier can provide a luxurious hot or cold bath experience. It comes with non-slip flooring, dual-flow jets, and built-in seat and armrests. We also like the top deck, which enables you to sit on the edge and only dip your legs in the water if desired.
Made in collaboration with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, the Alpine Glacier appears to be well-built. The exterior comprises an all-weather cabinet, and the chiller sits inside the unit. The tub comes with an insulated cover with safety locks for extra security. If you keep the tub outside, you shouldn’t have to worry about either component experiencing significant weather damage.
Many cold plunge tubs we tested use ozone filtration systems. The Alpine Glacier uses UV filtration, which requires less maintenance than ozone filters. Chilly Goat recommends replacing the filters every three to four months, whereas you’d have to replace an ozone filter at least once a month.
The tub’s insulation helps regulate the water temperature. With the Smart Life app, you can also control the water and the built-in LED lights. You only need to change the water every three to four months.
The Alpine Glacier weighs 560 pounds when empty. Chilly Goat only offers free curbside delivery, which is a drawback unless you opt for in-home installation, though that costs an extra $250. You’ll want to think carefully about where to put it before it arrives—once it’s in place, it won’t be easy to move.
And because the chiller resides inside the tub, there’s not as much legroom. Tall people may have to keep their knees bent during their ice baths.

Best DIY cold plunge: Rubbermaid Commercial Products Stock Tank
Key product features
What you should know
The Rubbermaid Commercial Products Stock Tank offers a straightforward, budget-friendly ice bath solution, accommodating two adults or individuals over 6 feet with minimal setup. However, it does require regular water changes and might need hose adapters.
- Customer reviews online suggest people over 6 feet can sit in the tank with their legs fully stretched.
- The Rubbermaid Stock Tank doesn’t come with filters, so you should drain the water every couple of days.
- People over 6 feet can sit in the tank with their legs fully stretched.
- You just have to fill it with water and add ice or frozen water bottles until it’s cold enough for your needs.
Why we like Rubbermaid Commercial Products Stock Tank as best DIY
If you’re looking for a no-frills ice bath solution, consider the Rubbermaid Commercial Products Stock Tank. This foam-insulated tank is one of the simplest DIY cold plunge tubs around. You just have to fill it with water and add ice or frozen water bottles until it’s cold enough for your needs.
Our product tester was able to chill the water to 52 degrees with ice in the 150-gallon tank that we tested.
Our team noted that two people can can fit in the tank at the same time. Additionally, customer reviews online suggest people over 6 feet can sit in the tank with their legs fully stretched.
The Rubbermaid Stock Tank doesn’t come with filters. One of our product reviewers throws Epsom salts in her stock tank with the hope of keeping the water sanitary and improving muscle recovery. She keeps her tank covered with a tarp for sanitary purposes. Still, she recommends draining the water every couple of days, which can be costly and wasteful.
This DIY cold plunge is made from weather-resistant structural foam. Our product tester said that the tank seemed very durable and didn’t change shape when filled with water. The edge of the tank was also pretty supportive when leaned against. We do recommend placing the tank on a flat, solid surface that can support its weight when filled.
However, the tank is not the most comfortable option, according to our tester, since it isn’t specifically designed to be used as a cold plunge tub. On the plus side, the 150-gallon tank requires no assembly and can be filled with water in around 30 minutes, according to our tester. While it weighs 53 pounds, our tester was able to easily drag it into place; however, it is quite large, so you can’t carry it without help.
Some reviewers online mentioned needing adapters so their hoses could fit the valve. If you find yourself in a similar situation, you can buy hose adapters for $10 or less online or at a local hardware store.
While this is one of the simplest options on the market, it still offers great value. Our product tester said this would be a great option for people who are new to cold plunges and want an easy and affordable way to see if they’d like to make it part of their recovery routine.
What customers are saying
On the Tractor Supply Co. website, the stock tank has over 1,1000 reviews and an average of 4.6 out of five stars. Customers note that it’s sturdy and doesn’t bend when filled.
Customers also like the size and its ability to accommodate different body types.
“This 150 gallon stock tank is the perfect size cold plunge bath for a 6’ 220 lb Dad,” wrote verified buyer Bret Postal. “Highly recommend!”
Some buyers have commented that the tank started leaking in less than a year. However, ensuring the tank sits on a level surface can boost its longevity.
Verified reviewer S. Griffith noted, “They’re good water tanks as long as you have them supported underneath very well. If you just put them on the dirt I found that they have a tendency to crack.”

What are the benefits of cold plunge tubs?
We consulted with Dr. Raj Dasgupta, a quadruple-board certified physician and clinical researcher, on the benefits of cold plunge tubs. According to him, there are many reasons why cold plunging can have a positive effect on your health and well-being.
“While immersed in an ice bath, blood vessels begin to constrict, leading to a reduction in blood flow. Once you exit the ice bath, the body begins to quickly push blood back to those areas, which helps to reduce inflammation and promote the healing process,” he said.
“Cold water exposure also has the potential to increase white blood cell production, improving the immune system,” Dr. Dasgupta continued. “Some researchers suggest that immersing yourself in icy water places the body under stress, triggering a survival response to help maintain your body’s core temperature. This promotes improved blood circulation, facilitating the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to areas in need of recovery.”
“Lastly, the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol, could potentially be linked to an increase in mood-regulating neurotransmitters like dopamine,” he said.
So, in summary, even if you only work out on the weekend, a cold plunge tub may complement your health and wellness routine. The potential benefits of ice plunges include:
- Reduced muscle soreness, fatigue, and inflammation (2)
- Improved moods and mental health (3)
- Reduced stress levels (4)
- Improved immune system function, measured by sickness absence (5)
- Improved blood flow and circulation (6)
But keep in mind, not all research suggests cold plunges are the wellbeing secret of the modern day enthusiast. Overall, the research is limited, particularly with different populations and ages (younger vs. older, women vs. men, trained vs. untrained, etc), but one very recent study found:
- Cold water immersion may attenuate muscle gains (1)
This finding isn’t to discredit the others, but overall awareness of the data set is important.
What to look for in a cold plunge tub
The following are important considerations when buying a cold plunge tub:
- Price: Does the tub fit into your budget?
- Space: Will the tub fit where you want to put it? Will you be able to place it near a water source?
- Indoor or outdoor use: Can the tub be used indoors, outdoors, or both? If you want to place it indoors, can you connect a hose to a valve to drain water in a sink or bathtub?
- Comfort and ergonomics: Can you sit or lie in the tub without feeling cramped? Is there enough room for you to go underwater up to your shoulders? Can you dip your head underwater if desired? If you’re considering a vertical tub, also check if it has a bench for you to sit on.
- Electrical requirements: Do you have an outlet near where you’ll set your tub? You’ll need it for tubs with chilling systems.
- Maintenance needs: Does the tub provide easy access to the filters so you can clean and/or replace them easily? Is it easy to drain the water?
- Features: Does the tub have advanced features like underwater lights? They can come in handy if you want to plunge at night or early in the morning. Does it sync with a mobile app? Mobile connectivity can enable you to set your ice bath schedule and turn the unit on or off from your phone.
- Warranty and return policies: What does the tub’s warranty cover? Will you be able to return it for a refund if you don’t like it? Do you have to pay to return it?
How do cold plunge tubs work?
A cold plunge tub enables you to submerge your body in water set to a cold temperature. Some tubs include water pumps that constantly circulate the water and filters that help remove debris. They may have thermostats and cooling systems that allow them to achieve a precise temperature. They may even connect to apps so you can control the settings from your phone.
Other, simpler tubs require you to add cold water and ice manually. These tubs require more upkeep since you have to change the water every couple of days, but they are often much cheaper.
Are cold plunges safe?
Cold plunges are generally safe for most people, assuming you’re abiding by appropriate water temperature and plunge duration. If you are not used to taking cold plunges, it’s generally recommended to start off at a warmer temperature such as 60° F and for a short duration of 30-60 seconds. Over time, you can adjust the water temperature lower and stay submerged for longer.
Regardless of how acclimated you become, extended periods of cold water submersion can be unsafe. You may want to limit your time in a cold plunge to just a few minutes, or even less in super cold water. According to the NOAA, hypothermia becomes a risk in water that’s 60° F or colder. In water that’s 32-40° F, loss of dexterity can occur in less than three minutes and more serious hyperthermia symptoms like loss of consciousness can set in in as little as 15 minutes. (7)
Individuals with pre-existing medical conditions should consult with their doctor before trying a cold plunge.
Who shouldn’t cold plunge?
Individuals with the following conditions should avoid cold plunge tubs:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Diabetes
- Raynaud’s phenomenon
- Hypertension
This isn’t an exhaustive list. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, speak with your doctor before trying a cold plunge.
Cold plunge tubs vs. ice baths
Cold plunge tubs are very similar to ice baths, but higher-end models can often reach a much colder temperature than a manual ice bath. Cold plunge tubs are generally more convenient and require less maintenance and water than an ice bath, as many cold plunge tubs come with filtration systems that allow for water to be stored and reused over long periods of time. However, cold plunge tubs are more expensive than DIY ice baths.
Other cold plunge options
In our quest to find the best cold plunges, we also researched several alternative options that, while effective, didn’t quite make it to our best-of roundup:
- Hydragun Supertub Coldtub: This one is touted for its versatility in water temperature control, but it’s not enough of a standout feature for us when it comes to a cold plunge tub.
- The Cold Pod Portable: We love that this tub is affordable and requires very little maintenance, but its very basic and doesn’t hold its weight as well as others, so you’ll probably miss out on some comfort.
- Edge Theory Tub Elite: While we were excited to test out this “portable powerhouse,” we haven’t had a chance to yet. Once we do, we’ll update this review.
- Renu Therapy Stoic 2.0 Cold Tub: This cold plunge tub didn’t make the list because although it was easy to setup, it doesn’t drain easily, the company only delivers curbside, and at $4,00 it costs almost as much as some of the best options on our list.
Ultimately, while these alternatives can still offer the benefits of cold water immersion, they didn’t meet the high standards of quality, performance, and user experience that we aimed for in our best-of roundup.
FAQs
What is a good temperature for a cold plunge tub?
According to experts, the ideal temperature for a cold plunge tub is between 50° and 59° F. (8) Though anecdotally, much of the discussion is keeping the water just above freezing, even though that may not be warranted. Some people can tolerate water temperatures in the upper 30s. If you’re new to cold water therapy, you may need to start above 60° F. Decrease it by a few degrees every week or two until you can handle colder water.
How large should a cold plunge tub be?
A cold plunge tub should be large enough to fit your entire body. Ideally, you’ll be able to stretch your legs out fully when lying down if you opt for a horizontal tub. If you choose a vertical tub, you should be able to go underwater at least up to your shoulders when your knees are bent.
How long should you stay in a cold plunge tub?
Studies around sprint performance and cold plunging suggest that two to five minutes is enough to reap the benefits of a cold plunge (9). Another study suggested approximately 18 minutes resulted in the best outcomes when it came to improving mood, though this length of time may increase your risk of frostbite or hypothermia, so caution is advised (3, 10).
“Not all studies have drawn a specific conclusion,” says Mohr.
If you’re new to cold water immersion, start by plunging for 30–60 seconds at a time. Increase the duration every couple of weeks until you can tolerate longer periods.
Can I use my bathtub for a cold plunge?
You can use your bathtub for cold plunges by adding cold water and ice. However, you may not get the exact temperature you need. Plus, the water can quickly become unsanitary since there are no filters to remove debris and bacteria. You’ll have to change the water and ice after each use, which is feasible but also a large and costly waste of resources.
Are there risks associated with cold plunge tubs?
One risk of cold plunging is that your body may experience cold shock. Cold shock can cause drastic increases in blood pressure and heart rate. (11) Hyperventilation and decreased dexterity may also occur. (12) Together, these suggest if you’re interested in trying this yourself, have a friend or partner with you to ensure you are safe. Individuals with certain health conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension, should consult with their doctor before trying a cold plunge.
How often should you cold plunge?
Cold plunging daily can be safe for most people. It’s important to gradually work up to that frequency, though. If you’re new to ice baths, start by cold plunging 1–2 times weekly for several weeks. As your body adjusts, add another day to your routine until you can handle daily dips in your cold plunge tub.
Is it better to cold plunge in the morning or night?
Just like there’s no best time of day to work out, there’s no best time to cold plunge. It’s a personal preference. Some prefer to take an ice bath immediately following a workout, though data suggests this may impede hypertrophy. Others like to take a cold dip first thing in the morning to jump start their day—if nothing else, it will surely wake you up. Some people find that an ice bath late at night improves their sleep quality—an essential component of staying healthy as you age.
Should you stretch after a cold plunge?
Like cold plunging, stretching can be beneficial for your health and well-being. You can certainly stretch after a cold plunge. However, we recommend waiting until your body has warmed up again. Stretching cold muscles can cause them to tighten and potentially cause injuries. (13)
Is a cold plunge sanitary?
A cold plunge tub is sanitary, but it needs to be properly maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Some cold plunge tub companies recommend rinsing off in the shower before using the tub. Higher-end cold plunge tubs come with filtration and sanitation systems, though these will still require routine maintenance such as cleaning or changing the filter. A higher-end cold plunge tub may require the water to be changed every two weeks to two months, depending on the design. But a manual-style cold plunge, such as inflatable or more basic options, may require you to change the water daily. All cold plunge tubs will require periodic draining and sanitation of the tank.
Not following the recommended cleaning and water replacement schedule may cause a cold plunge tub to no longer be sanitary, as bacteria and debris can accumulate over time, especially if the tub is kept outside.
