How to choose the best king size mattress
Before picking out your new king mattress, there are some important factors to consider. Your sleep position, body type, how soft or firm you prefer your mattress, and the level of support you want all affect which kind of mattress will help you sleep peacefully. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the mattress company’s policies and pricing before clicking “purchase.”
Sleep position
How you sleep is one of the most important things to know before buying a mattress. Certain sleeping positions require a mattress with more cushioning, while others are better suited on a firmer bed.
Body type
Like sleep position, body type also affects how comfortable a mattress is. Most mattresses are designed for sleepers of average weight and height. Heavier people may prefer a firmer bed to prevent mattress sagging, and some mattresses are made specifically for people over 250 pounds. (12) Lightweight people may be most comfortable on a softer bed.
Firmness
Most mattress manufacturers rate each bed on a firmness scale from one to 10. The higher the number, the more firm the mattress. Because how firm a mattress feels varies from person to person, our testers rated each mattress on our own firmness scale, too.
Responsiveness
How responsive a mattress is refers to how it reacts to your movements as you sleep. This is especially important for combination sleepers who change positions through the night or couples who enjoy a bouncy mattress for sex. The more responsive a mattress is, the quicker it springs back into shape as you move. Less responsive mattresses have a hugging or sinking feeling to them.
Motion isolation
Another important factor for couples (or if you sleep with a pet) to consider is motion isolation. If your partner’s tossing and turning keeps you up at night, you want to look for a bed that isolates motion well. Beds with good motion isolation will reduce movement transfer from one side to the other.
Price and shipping
Before picking out your new mattress, decide on your budget. The mattresses on our list range from $1,399 to over $2,500. Some mattress companies charge extra for mattress covers or other add-ons. While most manufacturers offer free shipping, some offer a delivery and setup service for an additional fee.
Trial period
A trial period gives you time to decide if your new mattress is right for you. All of the mattresses on our list have at least a 100-night trial period. You can return the mattress at any time during that period for a full refund, but check with your bed’s manufacturer for exact details.
Types of king size mattresses
Different mattress materials impact sleep quality based on your comfort preferences. It’s important to know the different types of mattresses before you start shopping.
Memory foam
Memory foam is one of the most commonly used mattress materials. Memory foam contours to your body, providing a hugging sensation. It comes in different densities for a softer or firmer feel. However, memory foam tends to trap heat more than other mattress materials, which is something to keep in mind if you’re a hot sleeper.
Latex
Latex is a hypoallergenic, breathable material. Like memory foam, it contours to your body, and research shows it can relieve pressure. (13) This durable material has grown in popularity but can be more expensive than some other options.
Innerspring
Innersprings or coils are another commonly used mattress material. Innerspring mattresses tend to be supportive, responsive, and cooler (coils promote airflow through the mattress). However, coils can sag or wear out over time.
Hybrid
Hybrid mattresses combine two or more materials, typically memory foam and innerspring or latex and innerspring. These mattresses usually have the best of both worlds regarding comfort and support. Foam or latex cushion and hug your body, while the coils provide a solid foundation.

Best overall king mattress: Nectar Classic
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
What our tester says
Bottom line
“Shoppers in the market for a king-sized bed are probably shopping with a bed partner, so it’s important that the mattress works for both of you, and that might not be easy to find,” says Dr. Andrew Spector, a sleep medicine specialist at Duke University.
“If a mattress works for side, back, and stomach sleepers, that’s a great option for couples who sleep in two different positions,” Spector continues. “Regardless of position, though, cooling is important for everyone because people tend to sleep better when they’re cooler.”
The Nectar Classic Memory Foam was tested by Josh Himes, who spent time testing each sleep position and measuring how supportive it felt, how well it relieved pressure, and other elements of the mattress.
“The foam feels very durable, especially the bottom two layers. It also has a machine washable cover which I really like,” Himes says. “There is some sinkage on the edges due to it being a memory foam mattress, but I had to get really close to the perimeter to feel like I was in any danger of rolling off. The edge support is above-average for a memory foam bed. The top layer allows sleepers to sink in, but the supportive bottom layers offer plenty of support.”
The Nectar Classic comes as a hybrid or full memory foam mattress, and either are suitable for all sleep positions. It offers great pressure relief and contouring.
- Great value at $1,399 for a full foam and $1,799 for a foam/coil hybrid.
- Awards granted for stomach, side, and back sleeping.
- Some may find it too firm, while others say it contours perfectly and improves pain.
Best king size mattress for side sleepers: Helix Midnight
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
What our tester says
Bottom line
One of the perks of a king-sized mattress is that you can separate from your bed partner. But if the edges of the mattress aren’t supported well, you’re left with the usable sleep space you might have had with a smaller mattress,” cautions Spector. “The other benefit couples often seek in a king-sized mattress is not perceiving the others’ movements. A mattress that transmits too much motion will defeat some of the purpose of getting the king size.”
Our testing team spent hours testing the mattresses for different factors, including edge support, responsiveness, motion transfer, pressure relief, and temperature. Some of these measurements were taken using instruments such as a pressure mat, seismograph, and temperature gun, while others were tested more subjectively by having testers lay on the bed and its edges.
“I like that this mattress has three layers of foam and a base of wrapped coils. I feel that the materials are high quality and durable,” says tester Hailey Moore.
The three foam layers help support side sleepers’ hips and shoulders, while the wrapped coil base keeps the spine aligned and motion transfer to a minimum.
The Helix Midnight is an ideal pick for side sleepers, with multiple foam layers for pressure relief and sinkage and a base of wrapped coils for support and spinal alignment.
- The Helix Midnight offers very good pressure point support, cradling your joints whether on your back or side.
- This mattress offers fantastic value for its $1,749 price tag.
- With its ultra-supportive foam layers over individually wrapped coils, the Helix Midnight may work best for side sleepers.
- Its firm surface makes getting in and out of bed easy–perfect for anyone with mobility issues.
Best king size mattress for couples: DreamCloud Premier
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
What our tester says
Bottom line
Spector notes: “While king-sized mattresses are more expensive, the extra space can be very important for some couples. In a time when huddling together for warmth is not as necessary as it once was, space becomes preferable to closeness for better sleep. Furthermore, a mattress that effectively prevents movement transfer could make a king-sized mattress feel like two separate sleeping spaces. And if you’re someone who likes to get as much space as possible, support around the edges of the mattress will be important.”
Our team uses multiple tools to test a mattress, such as a pressure mat, temperature gun, and seismograph, to measure elements like pressure relief and motion transfer. In addition to using mattress-specific instruments, we also spend time lying on the beds, testing the edges and the center for comfort and support.
“The edges feel super sturdy, I’d give edge support an eight out of 10,” says tester Lily Moe. “It’s pretty solid, even when sitting on the edge of the bed. When I lie on the edge I don’t feel like I’m at risk of rolling off, which is really nice. It does a really good job relieving pressure, too. Especially when lying on your back or side.”
The DreamCloud Premier’s supportive edges and comfortable hybrid construction make it a good choice for couples who want to sprawl out a bit.
Couples who want a luxurious sleep experience will likely love the strong edges, plush comfort, and superb motion isolation the DreamCloud Premier provides.
- With a firmer feel, this mattress may work best for back and stomach sleepers.
- The DreamCloud Premier costs between $2,169 and $2,799.
- Couples might just love this option for its cooling technology and minimal motion transfer.
- A cashmere blend covers this mattress for maximum comfort.
Best firm king size mattress: WinkBed Plus
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
What our tester says
Bottom line
“Be careful when buying a particularly firm mattress,” Spector cautions. “These tend to feel best when you first go to bed but by the end of the night can start to feel too firm and cause pressure spot problems. This is mostly a problem for side sleepers, but even back and stomach sleepers might roll onto their sides during the night and face this problem. Look for a mattress that is soft enough to be acceptable for a side sleeper even if you don’t identify as one.”
He also noted that cooling features are important and can help even those who do not consider themselves to be hot sleepers.
Our testing team meticulously tries out each mattress to determine where it excels and where it falls flat. This process involves mapping the amount of pressure relief a bed offers, checking the temperature and heat trapping of a mattress, and measuring things like edge support and motion isolation. The team also spends time lying on each bed in different positions to see what feels most comfortable.
Tester Jaimie Pearce tried out the mattress, commenting on its durability. “This seems like a durable mattress that would last a long time and wouldn’t need replacing for a while.” She also mentioned that the good edge support and firm build of the bed would help it maintain its shape. The solid edge support of this mattress makes it a good fit for those with issues getting in and out of bed, or couples who want the option to lie near the edges of the bed.
Though firmer, the WinkBed Plus is the ideal choice for back and stomach sleepers who need to keep their hips supported and their back aligned while sleeping.
- The WinkBed Plus offers excellent firm support for back and stomach sleepers.
- Our tester rated this mattress highly for value, with above-average features for the price.
- Although firm, this mattress’s soft TENCEL™ cover feels comfortable and luxurious.
- Get top-notch pressure relief with WinkBed’s proprietary lumbarlayer™.
Best king size hybrid mattress: Nolah Evolution
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
What our tester says
Bottom line
Spector advises, “Mattresses that limit motion transfer well tend to be very good for couples. If you are sleeping alone, though, it’s still important to get a mattress that will help you stay cool, and the ability to reposition yourself during the night is also important whether you are alone or with a partner. The other factor is firmness, and it’s important to choose a mattress that works for both partners. A solo sleeper who prefers sleeping on their back or stomach gets to prioritize a firmer mattress.”
In the testing lab, the team used multiple tools to see how the Nolah Evolution performed. The general consensus was that this mattress felt very luxurious and was suitable for all sleep positions.
“This feels like a really high-quality mattress,” says tester Jaimie Pearce. “It feels really durable, and the multiple layers make it really supportive. The edges aren’t as sturdy as I’d like, but otherwise it feels like a great mattress.”
Our team only tested the Luxury Firm model of the Nolah Evolution; side sleepers would likely prefer the Plush option for additional pressure relief, while heavy-weight sleepers and those who prefer to sleep on their stomachs may do better on the Firm model.
The Nolah Evolution is a high-end hybrid mattress that delivers ample comfort and all the features you want in a mattress: good bounce, cooling, and plenty of pressure relief.
- Our tester said this mattress feels like sleeping on a hotel bed: high-end and luxurious.
- The Nolah Evolution costs more than other mattresses in this group, but you may find the price tag worth it.
- This mattress may work best for combination sleepers who like to reposition through the night.
- The Nolah Evolution boasts an above-average cooling effect to keep your temperature regulated through the night.
Best king size mattress for heavy people: Titan Mattress Titan Plus
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
What our tester says
Bottom line
“The support provided by a firmer mattress can help heavier patients stay in a more comfortable position during the night,” suggests Spector. “Furthermore, it can help with repositioning, which can be a problem if the mattress is too soft or emphasizes reduced motion transfer over bounce. You want to be able to reposition without too much effort, and a firmer, bouncier mattress can help with that.”
The testing team conducts a full test of each mattress to provide accurate feedback and notes. This process utilizes instruments and both objective and subjective data.
Tester Lily Moe tried out the Titan Plus, saying, “The wrapped coils on this bed seem bigger than those on other beds. They really mean business—they’re super sturdy.” She mentioned the Titan Plus seemed “very durable” as well. When testing for motion isolation, Moe found this bed performed impressively. “This would be a great bed if your partner tosses and turns or has a different sleep schedule than you. You wouldn’t feel them getting in and out of the bed at night.”
The firmer construction wasn’t ideal for sleeping on her side, she says, “I do feel like we’ve tested more comfortable beds for side sleeping. I do wish there was just a little more give, particularly for my shoulder and hips, but if you like a really firm bed, I think you’ll enjoy this.”
The Titan Plus is aimed at larger bodies, and the firmer construction will offer more support to sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds.
Designed for larger bodies, the Titan Plus is a great pick for heavier-weight sleepers who want good support while sleeping. The foam and coil construction ensures joints are cradled while the spine remains in alignment.
- As a firm mattress, the Titan Mattress Titan Plus offers excellent support for heavy back sleepers.
- A great value for the cost; the Titan’s materials felt durable and long-lasting to our testers.
- This mattress will work best for heavy sleepers over 250lbs.
- The Titan Plus has average cooling qualities, but very hot sleepers may not stay as cool as they’d like.
- This mattress offers solid responsiveness, making position changes easier.
Best cooling king size mattress: Bear Mattress Elite Hybrid
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
What our tester says
Bottom line
“People tend to underestimate how important staying cool at night is,” observes Spector. “They might know to turn the thermostat down before going to bed, but if they have a mattress that retains heat and cover themselves with heavy blankets, the room temperature might not be cold enough to keep you cool, and that can affect sleep duration. A mattress that keeps you cool can be really valuable.
The testing team spends hours testing mattresses to ensure readers have accurate information, and part of this process involves trying different sleep positions, checking to see how well certain movements work on the mattress (i.e. changing positions, getting in and out of bed), and measuring how well it isolates motion.
Tester Lily Moe found this mattress to be especially comfortable for side sleeping. “I do feel like it has the right amount of pressure relief for your hips when lying on your side,” Moe says. “My spine feels properly aligned, which hasn’t been the case always for other mattresses. I feel like if you had a really sensitive lower back, this could be good for you.”
During the motion isolation test, the Bear Elite Hybrid scored highly, with Moe saying she hardly felt the movements of the other tester.
With plenty of cooling features, including a breathable cover, copper-infused foam, and airy coils, the Bear Elite Hybrid is a great fit for anyone who runs hot at night.
- The Bear Mattress Elite’s PCM fabric cover feels cool, airy, and plush to the touch.
- This mattress offers high quality, but the price felt a little steep to our testers, who recommend watching for a sale.
- The copper-infused memory foam kept our reviewers cool all night long.
- The Bear Elite’s zoned coil system provides above-average motion isolation.
Best value king size mattress: Brooklyn Bedding Signature
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
What our tester says
Bottom line
“Even the most expensive mattresses aren’t for everyone,” says Spector. “Mattresses are always a personal decision, so if you can find what you need in a cheaper mattress, that’s great. A mattress that transmits more motion might not be a problem if you sleep alone or if you have a partner who doesn’t move much. This could be a great trade off to save some money. And although staying cool is important, if you’ve never felt too hot or woke up sweaty, saving money on extra cooling features might not be worth it for you. The right mattress still comes down first to firmness, with other features being bonuses.”
Mattress testing is a blend of subjective and objective data collection by our testing team. Some factors, such as pressure relief and motion isolation, can be measured objectively using specific tools. Others, such as firmness and comfort, are measured subjectively by laying on the mattress.
“I feel like the responsiveness is really good. It’s very easy to get out of the bed, and if you had any mobility issues, the bed would support you getting in and out of bed or moving around,” says tester Lily Moe. “I think it’s very good for stomach and back sleepers, it feels most comfortable for me lying on my back. I feel like my weight is well-destributed, and the heavier points like hips and shoulders are in neutral positions.”
Comfortable and affordable, the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid delivers top-notch performance without the luxurious price tag found on other hybrid mattresses.
- Our testers voted the Brooklyn Bed Signature Hybrid as best for the price: the materials felt comfortable and durable.
- Brooklyn frequently offers coupons and discounts through its website.
- This mattress has a generous bounce, which may work best for combination sleepers.
- On top of the supportive foam lies a cozy pillow top for ultimate comfort.
Most comfortable king size mattress: Saatva Classic
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
What our tester says
Bottom line
“A couple shopping for a king-sized mattress probably already know if one or both of them are very active sleepers,” notes Spector. “If at least one member of the couple moves around a lot, motion transfer is likely to be a problem, and a mattress that prevents this is important. Otherwise, a little bounce to help repositioning is helpful because it could lead to shorter arousals at night when rolling over. You don’t want to have to work at switching positions.”
Tester Jaimie Pearce spent a while laying on the Saatva Classic, trying different sleeping positions, and taking notes on how it felt on the edges.
“This seems like a super durable mattress. The edges are supportive and I think it would hold it’s shape very well over time,” Pearce says. “The foam rails make it super stable, it’s easy to get in and out of, and you can lie on the edges without feeling like you’ll roll off. I could tell immediately when laying on it that it was a high quality durable mattress, definitely luxury.”
With high levels of support and cushion, the Saatva Classic is a luxurious mattress that offers comfort for all sleep positions.
- The Saatva Classic feels extremely comfortable and supportive—a rare duo.
- This option is more expensive than average but comes with a lot of perks, like free removal of your old mattress.
- The Saatva may work best for combination sleepers who like to move around.
- Its patented Lumbar Zone® technology provides ultimate back support.
Best king size mattress for back pain: Emma Hybrid Comfort
Pros and cons
Mattress overview
Our advisor’s take
Bottom line
“There is no one-size-fits-all solution to back pain,” notes Spector. “A side-sleeper with back pain probably can’t willfully become a back sleeper in order to sleep on a more firm mattress and get back pain relief that way. Each person needs to factor in their own sleep preferences when choosing a firmness level. A side sleeper with back pain might find relief by replacing their firm mattress with a softer one while a back sleeper with back pain might change from softer to firmer.”
“In addition, mattresses that designate zones of different support might hit people of different heights in different places,” Spector explains, “so if you’re much taller or shorter than average, you might not find the zones to your liking.”
With ample support for the lower back, the Emma Hybrid Comfort can help alleviate back pain for some sleepers.
- The Emma Hybrid Comfort offers comfortable support for back and stomach sleepers.
- This mattress offers fantastic value at $1,649, including free shipping and returns.
- The Emma Hybrid provides medium-firm support, which research finds offers maximum relief for people with back pain.
- While its firmness works well for back pain, side sleepers may find it too firm.
- With outstanding motion isolation, you won’t feel much movement from anyone who shares your bed.
How we test the best king mattresses
Every Fortune Recommends ™ mattress review is guided by an experienced team of certified sleep science coaches, industry experts, and real-world consumers. We aim to analyze every mattress we discuss through a variety of physical tests. We evaluate factors like edge support, sinkage, motion isolation, and pressure relief to arrive at a comprehensive assessment. When physical testing insights are not available, we rely on thorough research performed by writers and editors with years of experience in sleep content.
Our proprietary testing methodology ensures each mattress undergoes the same meticulous evaluation so we can provide objective and trustworthy feedback that’s grounded in genuine user experiences. Read our full mattress testing methodology for more information.
Sleep experience – 40%
A high-quality mattress should feel like it’s designed to provide you with the best sleep of your life. It should also deliver on that promise. Our mattress testers assess various factors to reflect the functional aspects of the mattress as well as the user’s sleep experience.
Here’s what we test:
- Temperature regulation
- Motion isolation
- Back pressure relief
- Side pressure relief
Support – 30%
Alongside the sleep experience, comfort and support are just as important for a healthy and restful sleep. A high-quality mattress should assist in providing relief from aches and pains. It should also offer firm edge support, which is especially important for those who need extra stability when getting out of bed or slipping on their shoes.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
- Edge sinkage
- Center sinkage
Customer experience – 15%
Sometimes, the mattress can be great, but if the overall shopping experience wasn’t, that could easily put a sour taste in a user’s mouth. We analyze the purchasing process from start to finish, including what options are available when something goes wrong.
We scrutinize each mattress on the following:
- Warranty
- Sleep trial
- Delivery time
- Customer service
- Mattress weight
Health & safety – 10%
A mattress is more than just a sleeping surface—it’s an environment where you spend a significant portion of your life. We assess critical aspects of mattresses that may directly impact your well-being and peace of mind.
Our factors in this rating include:
- Hypoallergenic materials
- Safety certifications
- Brand reputation
Cost – 5%
Assessing value involves an examination of several key factors that contribute to a mattress’s worth, with price at the forefront. A mattress that’s priced just within reach of its target audience yet surpasses competitors in terms of materials, performance, and support presents a compelling value proposition. The availability of frequent discounts is also factored into our cost assessment.
Bonus points
When a mattress goes above and beyond the factors listed above, we award it with extra points to signify its special status. These features aren’t necessary to create a comfortable, supportive mattress, but they do provide additional value.
Bonus points are added for the following considerations:
- Customization
- Accessory inclusion
- Technology
- Weight supported
What to consider when buying a king-size mattress
If you’re looking for a king-size mattress to fit your personal sleep needs, you have much to consider. Medium-firm mattresses work well for back pain, and firm mattresses can provide support for those regardless of weight or BMI. (3) If you share your bed, you may want to go with a mattress with good motion isolation and edge support so you don’t feel your partner move around, and if you sleep with a bed-hog, you know the edge of the mattress won’t let you slide off.
If you sleep hot, look for a mattress with excellent cooling technology (typically coiled/hybrid models over full-foam). If you have back or joint pain, you may need to try out a few mattresses to find your sweet spot–firm enough to support your back but responsive enough to mold to your hips and shoulders. All the king mattresses on our list have a trial period, so you can try a couple before deciding on your perfect sleeping surface.
Who is a king-size mattress best for?
With all the luxurious space a king-size mattress offers, this size benefits just about everybody. Standard king-size beds typically measure 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. (8) If you sleep with a bed partner, those 76 inches may feel like a lifesaver.
Does a child (or three) join you at some point during the night? A king-size mattress gives you enough space for a pillow buffer against toddler kicks to the face. People with pets tend to love bigger mattresses, too. The less you have to fight over space, the better.
The main downside to this size is that all those inches must fit into your bedroom or sleeping space. Some may not mind crawling directly onto their mattress from the bedroom door, but others may decide it’s too big for the room.
Types of king-size mattresses
You’ll quickly notice that most king mattresses are named after states…we’re not sure why. Here are all the types of king-size mattresses and their measurements: (4)
- Regular/Standard King Mattress: 80 by 76 inches
- RV/Short King Mattress: 80 by 72 inches
- California King Mattress: 84 by 72 inches
- Texas King Mattress: 98 x 80 inches
- Wyoming King Mattress: 84 by 84 inches
- Vermont/Alberta King Mattress: 96 by 96 inches
- Alaskan King Mattress: 108 by 108 inches
Are you not sure which is right for you? Grab your measuring tape and see how a king-size mattress will fit in your bedroom.
King-size mattresses also come as all-foam or foam/coil hybrids. While some suppliers offer full foam king-size mattresses at lower prices, most of our testers noticed better support and cooling from hybrid mattresses.
Other mattresses we tried
Our team tested more than 60 mattresses. While every bed we evaluated comes in king size, not every bed had all the features to make it on our list of the best king-size mattresses. Here are a few other mattresses we considered:
- Avocado Green Mattress: Environmentally conscious shoppers may love the natural materials in this mattress. However, at $3,699 for a medium-firm king-sized bed, we thought the Avocado Green was too expensive to include on our list.
- Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe: This premium mattress has lots of cooling features to keep hot sleepers comfortable. After testing, we decided not to include it on our list of best king mattresses because the cooling cover’s slick material led to very poor edge support.
- Silk and Snow Hybrid Mattress: After testing, we did not include the Silk and Snow Hybrid on our list because this boxed mattress didn’t seem as durable as some other beds.
FAQs
How much does a good king-size mattress cost?
According to our research, a comfortable, supportive, and durable king-size mattress costs between $849 and $3,000. Most mattress sellers let you try one out for at least two months to see if it is worth the money.
How long should a king-size mattress last?
Every mattress on our list comes with a minimum 10-year warranty, and many offer a lifetime warranty. We recommend steering clear of any mattress that offers a warranty of less than 10 years.
Who makes the most comfortable king-size mattress?
According to our research, medium-firm mattresses offer the best support, and the Saatva Classic wins our top spot for comfort. (4) However, mattress comfort remains subjective, and you may need to try out one or two to find your perfect match.
How big are king-size mattresses?
A standard king-size mattress measures 80 by 76 inches, which equals about six and a half feet by just under six and a half. You can get a slightly shorter king for an RV or try the massive Alaskan king at a whopping 108 inches squared.
