The 8 best luxury mattresses, reviewed by experts

Considering that we spend one-third of our lifespan sleeping or trying to sleep, it stands to reason that beds and bedding are worthy investments. (1) This is one purchase where a higher price point can pay dividends in the way of good sleep quality and mattress longevity. However, just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean it’s a better mattress or guarantees improved sleep quality. The best luxury mattresses elegantly combine form and function, but the best mattress for you is one that accommodates your specific sleep preferences.

“A mattress that lacks proper support, uses low-quality materials, or is too firm or too soft can worsen pain from pressure points and fail to keep the spine in proper alignment while sleeping,” notes Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM, quadruple-board certified medical reviewer.

Our team spent hours assessing over 60 luxury mattresses so we could provide you with honest luxury mattress reviews. Throughout the testing process, we analyzed each mattress’s construction, support, pressure point relief, cooling properties, and responsiveness—the eight mattresses on this list came out on top.

Our picks for the best luxury mattresses

How to choose the best luxury mattress for you

The best luxury mattresses may be chock full of high-end materials and assorted extras that call for a high price tag, but a good mattress is only good if it matches your sleep style and personal preferences. Anything less can affect your sleep quality and duration. Over time, short sleep and poor quality sleep can lead to a host of health issues, starting with moodiness and irritability and ending with more serious health outcomes like heart disease and stroke.

“Consider the mattress’s spinal support, comfort, durability, and motion isolation (if sharing with a partner) when choosing the best mattress for you,” adds Dr. Raj. “Finding the right mattress for you can be crucial for your overall sleep and health.”

Ultimately, the comfort of your mattress plays a key role in your overall sleep quality. So, when shopping for one, be sure to consider the following. (5)

Sleep position

While the best sleeping position reduces stress and promotes better body balance, everyone has their favorite. (6) So, when shopping for a luxury mattress, keep your preferred sleep style in mind.

Side sleepers should look for a soft to medium-firm mattress that delivers ample support and cushioning for relief at common pressure points like the shoulders and hips.

Back sleepers will find that a medium-firm to firm mattress promotes proper alignment, keeping their hips and lower back from sinking too deeply into the mattress. Research shows that medium-firm mattresses are better for those with low back pain. (7)

Stomach sleepers should opt for a firm to ultra-firm mattress that prevents their hips from sinking too much. Anything softer is likely to push your back out of alignment, causing a curvature night after night, which can be painful.

Sleep temperature

While research shows that ambient temperatures in your sleep space can impair your sleep, studies have also shown that your body temperature can affect its duration and disturb your sleep architecture (the transition from one sleep stage to the next. (8) All of this is to say, temperature matters.

Hybrid mattresses are a better option for those who tend to overheat night after night, as the coil construction promotes airflow to keep things cool. Beyond that, look for other cooling features and upgrades like breathable materials, cooling gel foams, or phase change materials that dissipate heat.

Edge support

Simply put, good edge support means you can lay or sit on the edge of your bed without it crushing beneath you. Good edge support increases the usable space of your mattress, making it an important consideration for couples. It can also facilitate your movements into and out of bed.

Motion isolation

If you’re sleeping with a partner (even the furry kind), good motion isolation means a better night’s sleep—for you. Without it, your bedmate’s movements will likely disturb and keep you awake at night. Memory foam mattresses are typically great at keeping motion transfer to a minimum. If you’re team-hybrid, however, be sure to look for dense, high-quality foams for some help.

Materials and price

When shopping for a luxury mattress, you’ll likely encounter a lot of marketing talk about the materials contained within. Ultimately, you’ll need to make heads or tails of what you’re looking at to ensure those details warrant the price tag. While support and comfort should be standard, posh details like Euro pillow tops, cooling upgrades, and hand finishing may be worth splurging on.

Trial period and return policy

Reading about a mattress is one thing; sleeping on it comfortably is another. The good news is that most mattress companies offer sleep trial periods, free shipping, and free or low-cost returns, all intended to make your decision a little easier. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with return and exchange policies as well as the logistics of each before buying.

Types of luxury mattresses

The materials can also depend on the type of luxury mattress you’re shopping for, which you’ll want to consider before you start your search. Most mattresses fall into one of the four core categories below, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Memory foam

Memory foam mattresses are often a favorite among sleepers who like a deeper sinking feel. The foams cradle your body as they adjust to pressure and body heat. Traditionally, these beds have been known to trap heat. However, recent technology, like gel and copper-infused foams, have helped mitigate that effect.

Latex

Latex mattresses have been rising in popularity recently as sleepers seek healthier sleep products for themselves and the environment. While you can find mattresses made with all latex foam, we often see it combined with other materials, like springs in a hybrid bed or other foam types. Latex offers exceptional pressure relief and gives mattresses a buoyant feel. However, it’s also pricier and may increase the mattress cost.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses are likely considered more traditional and less luxurious. However, brands like Saatva have proven that this doesn’t have to be the case. Many now include a thin layer of foam to help cushion the springs and add a plush pillow top to enhance comfort.

Hybrid

You’ll notice almost all of the mattresses on this list fall into the hybrid category. These beds combine the best qualities of foam and innerspring mattresses. They balance the pressure-relieving features of memory foam mattresses with the sturdy support of steel coils, making them incredibly versatile.

“It’s unusual to find one mattress that will be comfortable for back, stomach, and side sleepers as side sleepers tend to like mattresses to be the softest,” says Dr. Andrew Spector, a sleep medicine specialist at Duke University

“Having a mattress that allows couples to each choose their own preferred sleeping position is a perk. It’s also important for couples to have a mattress that doesn’t transmit motion,” Spector continues. “As anyone with an active bed partner knows, it can be highly disruptive to your sleep if you’re sleeping next to someone who moves a lot. A mattress that limits the transmission of that movement will be better for couples, especially if one is particularly active during sleep from a condition such as restless legs syndrome or periodic limb movement disorder.”

Our tester noted the Helix Midnight Luxe’s quality materials when first evaluating the hybrid mattress. “The foam feels durable and high quality, and there are wrapped coils underneath. You can feel the memory foam, and you sink in slightly when sitting on the mattress. Overall, the quality of the materials seems durable,” said Jaimie Pearce.

While our testers liked how easy it was to move on the mattress, the responsive, bouncy surface didn’t isolate motion well. They said they could feel their testing partner’s small, simple movements when both were on the mattress.

After trying multiple sleeping positions, our team thinks the Helix Midnight Luxe should provide pressure relief. They felt the strong support from the deeper spring coil layers working with the soft, sinking top foam layer—an excellent hybrid mattress at work.

Part of the brand’s premium line of mattresses, our testing found that the Helix Midnight Luxe supports sleepers with a nice balance of comfort and support. The hybrid design is a solid pick for a variety of sleep styles, and couples will appreciate features like good motion isolation and a choice of cooling options.

  • The mattress has a balanced feel, offering plenty of support and cushioning.
  • Plush Euro top and coil construction makes it a good option for a range of sleep positions.
  • The mattress offers good temperature regulation.
  • It’s responsive, making movement and position changes easy.

Why we like Helix Midnight Luxe as the best hybrid luxury mattress

Our testing revealed that the Helix Midnight Luxe is the best hybrid high-end mattress. Luxury details include a pressure-relieving pillow top, exceptional weight distribution, and customizable cooling options.

Overall, the Midnight Luxe has a balanced feel. Sleepers will find that the combination of targeted zoned lumbar support and memory foam cradles their body at the shoulders while providing a firmer feel under their hips, where most of their weight is concentrated. The pillow top is plush, but we found that the Midnight Luxe is still a good pick for those who like to sleep on their mattress instead of in it.

Although the brand says the Midnight Luxe is designed for side sleepers, our testing revealed that its enhanced spinal alignment and lumbar support may also be suitable for back sleepers in all weight categories and some stomach sleepers as well. One of our testers believed the foam feels durable and high quality. “You can feel the memory foam, and it feels like you sink in slightly when sitting on it,” they add.

While couples will appreciate a full perimeter of edge support, our testing showed that you may be able to feel your partner’s bigger movements. This mattress is also pretty responsive—it’s easy to move around on and doesn’t require much effort to change sleeping positions.

With more bodies on the bed, temperature regulation is an important factor for sleepers to consider. The hybrid design of Midnight Luxe breathable coils and copper-infused gel foams keep you cooler, although sleepers should note that this mattress isn’t cool to the touch. If sleeping hot is a real concern, you can opt for the GlacioTex™ Cooling Cover, which helps with heat dissipation.

What to consider

  • Despite cooling features, this mattress isn’t cool to the touch which can make it feel a bit too hot for some sleepers.
  • It may be a luxury mattress, but we have to note that hefty price tag of $2,373.33 for a queen before any discounts.
  • The mattress weighs around 115 lbs for a queen, which may make it difficult to set up for some users.

Spector notes that side sleepers tend to prefer softer mattresses to relieve pressure on the hips and allow for better spinal alignment. “A mattress that is too soft, though, can lead people to get stuck when trying to roll over,” he advises. “You don’t want to have to fully awaken just to change positions at night.”

When evaluating the Nectar Luxe’s support, our tester reported that they easily sunk into the top layer and didn’t feel like the mattress was lifting them up. Sleepers who enjoy a hugging, sinking feel may like the Nectar Luxe’s plush all-foam layers.

Our tester was impressed with how supportive the Nectar Luxe is for side sleeping. “I personally liked this bed for side sleeping best. I liked the support it gave to my shoulders,” noted tester Jaimie Pearce.

While the mattress excelled at side sleeping, our tester also recommended it for back sleepers who want a softer mattress. In this position, they felt the mattress contour to and support their back.

The Nectar Luxe mattress delivers a nice balance of pressure relief and support for a range of sleep styles. It’s responsive with a medium feel and above-average motion isolation.

  • The mattress delivers a balance of support and pressure relief.
  • Copper-infused cover and phase change material contribute to its cooling capabilities.
  • A solid choice for side sleepers as well as side and back combo sleepers.
  • Only provides average edge support and motion isolation.

Why we like Nectar Luxe as the best for side sleepers

In our extensive sleep testing, the Nectar Luxe earned its position as the best luxury bed for side sleepers. Ultimately, it’s a series of foam layers, but sleepers will find a medium feel, ample support, and elegantly cradled pressure points.

From the top down, the Nectar Luxe features a comfort layer made from gel memory foam that contributes to a plush feel and good motion isolation. This is followed by a transition layer made from soft poly-foam that’s responsible for cushioning and pressure relief. The design is rounded out with a 7-inch stability base layer that adds structure and enhances durability.

While foam mattresses are known to sleep hot owing to a lack of airflow, the Nectar Luxe employs three elements to help you sleep cooler: a copper-infused memory foam cover, cooling gel memory foam, and phase change material that absorbs and dissipates heat. Nectar claims this approach delivers superior cooling capabilities. However, our testing revealed that while you won’t overheat with the Nectar Luxe, you’ll be more temperature-neutral than anything else.

In the absence of coils, edge support is usually negligible with foam mattresses, and the Nectar Luxe is no exception. Our testers found only mediocre support when lying or sitting on the edge. It’s not the best, but it’s not the worst either. They state, “This mattress is an all-foam mattress and doesn’t seem very durable or like it would last a long time.” The same goes for its motion isolation—slightly above average; they noticed some movement but nothing earth-shattering.

The Nectar Luxe performed a bit better in terms of responsiveness. It has a surprising amount of bounce for an all-foam mattress, so sleepers should find it easy to switch positions.

Check out our best mattresses for side sleepers or our full Nectar Premier mattress review to learn more.

What to consider

  • One of our testers noted that the foam doesn’t seem super durable, as it doesn’t seem reinforced by anything.
  • Our testers found only mediocre support when lying or sitting on the edge, which won’t make it ideal for someone who likes to sit on the edge to put their shoes on, for example.
  • Despite being a luxury mattress, we noted that there is no white-glove delivery service. This means you’ll have to bring the mattress in and set it up yourself, which could be bothersome for some.

What customers are saying

The Nectar Luxe, earning 4.3 stars with over 7,000 reviews on Amazon, is a favorite among most customers for its blend of comfort and support.

Verified Amazon customer Stacie V. writes, “After researching, I decided to buy this mattress, and I was not disappointed. The breathable cover is a major plus, especially during hot nights. The therapeutic gel memory foam is fantastic and offers the support I need. It’s even suitable for all sleep positions, so you’re covered no matter how you sleep. I highly recommend it!”

“Private Smith” is a verified Amazon customer who experienced similar comfort: “My sleep is improved, and previous aches and pains are melting away! We are glad we got this to replace our standard mattress/box springs!”

Unfortunately, Robert B. experienced the same lack of edge support that our testers noted: “So far, the sleep has been good, and no back aches, I am happy to say. It’s medium firm, I believe, or it’s supposed to be. The biggest problem is that the edges of the bed seemingly collapse when sitting on the edge, but if you move more in and, of course, lay down to sleep, it’s not so bad.”

“Buying a new mattress can be a big challenge,” cautions Spector. “Aside from the obvious cost issues, you usually don’t get to try it out for more than a few minutes in a store or maybe not at all if you’re ordering online, yet you’re going to have to sleep on it all night. A firmer mattress might feel great in the store, but after 7 hours at home, you might wish for something softer. If testing a mattress in the store, be sure to test it in your preferred sleeping position with a pillow that matches what you would typically use at home. Try rolling over. Is it easy to shift positions? Try it with a partner. How much of their movement do you feel? In the end, you’ll never know until you’ve slept on it, so don’t forget to check the return policy in case you get it wrong.”

The Saatva Rx is constructed with a Therapeutic Support Core™ that delivers incredible support and top-notch pressure relief. This bed may be highly beneficial for those experiencing pain and discomfort associated with chronic back and joint pain. The high-quality foam contours your body and helps eliminate pressure build-up, as the sturdy coil unit provides support and spinal alignment.

  • Excellent for side sleepers and those with long-lasting joint issues.
  • This mattress is incredibly responsive, allowing for easy repositioning.
  • Breathable cover and foams, and coils that allow airflow to help regulate body temperature.
  • With a 365-night sleep trial, you have a full year to decide if this is the right mattress for you.
  • Saatva will remove your old mattress for free.

Why we think the Saatva Rx is the most comfortable luxury mattress overall

Falling into a comfortable bed after a long day can be like getting a much-needed hug. With a combination of welcoming softness and sturdy support, we deem the Saatva Rx the most comfortable luxury mattress of the ones we tested.

This mattress is designed for those with chronic back and joint pain, and Saatva’s dedication to providing pressure relief, support, and unparalleled comfort is evident as soon as you slip into the Rx. To keep you from overheating, the Saatva RX employs a breathable organic cotton cover that promotes cooler sleep, while the Lumbar Zone® Quilting provides additional support around the spine. Sleepers’ lower backs are comforted by the gel-infused memory foam as the high-density foam layers gently cradle their whole body. Our testers appreciated that while the upper layers bring luxurious comfort, sleepers also feel secure thanks to the more than 1,600 micro coils.

If you’re already dealing with back pain, you certainly don’t want a mattress that may exacerbate these issues. The Saatva Rx provides exceptional responsiveness, spinal alignment, and pressure relief, which are performance attributes that can provide higher-quality sleep and unparalleled overall comfort. This mattress’s combination of softness and support works well for side sleepers of all weight categories, while most back sleepers will also find that this bed meets or exceeds their needs. Those who sleep on their stomach may notice a little more sinkage around their hips due to the plush upper layers. Although this doesn’t make it a dealbreaker for us, we suggest using a flatter pillow to maintain good spinal alignment.

Our testers are fans of how responsive and bouncy the Saatva Rx is, making it a great choice for combination sleepers and sexually active couples. As is typically the case with a highly responsive bed, there wasn’t as much motion isolation, meaning that those who sleep with a restless partner may be disturbed by the nocturnal twists and turns. Although we would have liked to have seen a little more edge support when sitting on the side of the bed, the firmer coils on the outer perimeter still gave ample security when lying near the outer edge.

The Saatva Rx is not a cooling bed by design, but it implements several cooling features that increase comfort. The breathable cover, gel-infused foams, and micro-coils that promote airflow work together to promote a comfortable sleeping temperature.

If you want a bed that combines elements of cradling, support, pressure relief, and responsiveness to provide a supremely comfortable sleeping experience, the Saatva Rx may be the bed for you.

What to consider

  • While we appreciate the high-quality materials that make this mattress a luxury pick, it may make this bed too expensive for some shopper’s budgets. The current cost for a queen mattress is $2,945.
  • Because the bed is so responsive, the mattress might have poor motion absorption for some couples who are light sleepers.
  • Our testers would have liked a bit more edge support when sitting on the side of the bed.

“While some people who prefer to sleep on their backs will stay in that position all night, many people who fall asleep on their backs wind up on their sides at some point during the night,” notes Spector. “Having a mattress that will be comfortable in multiple positions is important. Shoppers should be cautious of any mattress that transmits movement, especially if they share the bed with an active sleeper. That could be a deal-breaker for some couples. Shoppers also tend to underestimate how important it is to stay cool overnight. Getting too hot is a common cause for getting poor sleep, so mattresses with cooling features can help alleviate some of that.”

Suitable for a variety of sleeping positions, we found that the WinkBed delivers a firm mattress with impressive edge support and a plush pillow top feel. Under the covers, buyers will find a bouncy mattress with exceptional edge support and one of the best cooling mattresses around.

  • Zoned support helps sleepers maintain proper spinal alignment throughout the night.
  • Buyers can choose from four firmness options—three of which don’t add to the bottom line (Plus costs more).
  • This mattress is a solid option for hot sleepers.
  • Provides excellent edge support.

Why we like The Winkbed as the best firm luxury mattress

If you think sleep tourism is the only way to enjoy the luxe feeling of a hotel mattress, here’s some good news. The WinkBed delivers a hotel-worthy luxury mattress feel at a surprisingly affordable price.

From top to bottom, this mattress features two inches of plush gel-infused foam that cradles pressure points, an innerspring unit comprised of individually wrapped coils that provide zoned support for your back, and edge support.

Overall, the WinkBed is what you’d expect from a traditional hybrid—it’s firm yet gently contouring (courtesy of the foam Euro top). We found that the zoned support really shined in our evaluations, and the mattress excels in weight distribution and alignment.

While the WinkBed provides firm support those struggling with back pain typically need, our testing found it to be one of the best mattresses for combo sleepers. It’s incredibly responsive and helps with weight distribution in all positions. Moreover, the coils provide excellent bounce, so sleepers should find it relatively easy to switch positions.

Couples are likely to appreciate the responsiveness and edge support, which boosts the usable sleeping surface. However, our testers concluded that motion isolation comes up short. With only average motion isolation, deep sleepers may find it stifles their partners’ big movements, but light sleepers may need to look elsewhere.

One of the standout features of the WinkBed is its cooling capability. It features a Tencel cover, gel-infused foam, and breathable coils—all of which make it a cooling mattress and a good match for hot sleepers.

Read our full WinkBed mattress review for more information.

What to consider

  • While deep sleepers might not notice much movement, light sleepers may dislike the average motion isolation this mattress offers.
  • While it is a luxury mattress, the price tag of $1,799 may be a bit much for some customers.
  • Due to its exceptional firmness, this might make the mattress a bit too firm if you’re a side sleeper, which may cause discomfort in your shoulder or hips.

Spector says affordability should be one of the factors shoppers consider, not just the features.

“If you can get a cooling mattress with good movement isolation in a firmness level that suits your sleeping style, why pay two-to-three times more than you need to? You can get all the features you need in a more affordable mattress. Durability becomes the big question because replacing a more affordable but less durable mattress is not as economical. For those who can’t afford the higher up-front costs of the more expensive models, though, buying a luxury mattress at an affordable price would be the way to go.”

When testing the Silk and Snow Hybrid Plush, our tester quickly realized how much sinkage it has, even for a hybrid mattress. The Plush option truly gives the mattress a more traditional memory foam feel. “I mostly sank into this mattress. It wasn’t completely sunken in, but I did feel cradled in this bed,” said tester Jaimie Pearce.

Our tester recommends the Silk and Snow Hybrid Plush for side and back sleepers but doesn’t think it offers enough lifted support in the hips for stomach sleepers. If you switch between sleeping on your back and side throughout the night, the plush mattress is surprisingly supportive.

“This mattress was pretty easy to change positions in […] I think you sink in a little, having to exert some energy while moving from position to position, but it wasn’t too hard.” Pearce noted.

Overall, the Silk and Snow Hybrid Plush is an affordable option for most side and back sleepers who want a plush, cradling mattress.

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is a high-quality, plush mattress that blends value and luxury. It’s crafted with CertiPUR-US-certified foams and tempered Canadian steel for ultimate pressure relief and sturdy support.

  • It’s a very soft mattress with exceptional cradling for side, back, and combination sleepers.
  • This mattress’s $1,100 price tag for a queen-sized mattress makes it accessible to many shoppers.
  • The breathable cover features antimicrobial and cooling properties to help keep sleepers cool, clean, and dry through the night.

Why we like Silk & Snow Hybrid Plush as the most affordable

The Silk & Snow Hybrid Plush is designed for those sleepers who want a lavish, cloud-like sleep experience without the luxury price tag. Though it has a cheap price, it doesn’t feel substandard. It’s a robust, 14-inch, Canadian-made mattress that balances pressure relief and support through high-quality foams and sturdy steel coils.

We were impressed with the thick, quilted pillow top featuring an antimicrobial cover. Since you can’t remove the mattress cover to wash it, we like the fact that it’s protected against germs and bacteria. The breathable material also helps reduce heat buildup and keep moisture at bay. With the pocketed coils at the base also allowing for excellent airflow, this mattress ends up being one of the best cooling mattresses for the price.

The cover also contains a plush memory foam layer to help give this mattress a softer feel. Another layer of high-density foam just below that deepens the pressure relief. We could feel the mattress cradling our joints, making it incredibly comfortable for side sleeping.

To ensure the deep sinking feel doesn’t land you right onto the supportive innerspring layer, Silk & Snow includes a thick poly foam layer to smooth the transition. It helps distribute weight evenly and ease you onto the springs below. The coils provide zoned support, with firmer coils in the middle third to support the lower back. Additionally, this layer is wrapped in extra firm foam to help give more support along the edge. Our testers found it held up well when lying near the edge but sunk considerably when sitting along the perimeter.

However, one tester doesn’t believe the foam will hold up, stating, “The edges seem like they aren’t as durable as other choices. There are no wrapped coils.”

We found this mattress felt exquisite for those who like a soft, cloud-like sleep surface. The materials also felt very durable. The brand uses high-density CertiPUR-US foams and up to 1200 tempered Canadian steel coils. We expect this mattress will last many years.

What to consider

  • Despite being a luxury mattress, it lacks a crucial luxury feature for some: widely-available white glove delivery. It’s only available in Toronto and GTA area.
  • One of our testers noted that the edges seem like they aren’t as durable as other mattresses.
  • Being an all-foam mattress, one of our testers doesn’t believe it will hold up well over time. Additionally, this material may make the mattress a  bit too soft for stomach sleepers.

“When it comes to treating back pain, a medium-firm mattress tends to be better than the most firm mattresses, “ says Spector. “More than cost, firmness levels and comfort are what should drive a person to choose a mattress. Expensive mattress might end up being more durable, but just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean it’s the right one for you. If the higher cost also gets you other useful features, such as cooling and reduced movement transition, then it might be worth splurging. There’s no doubt that mattresses can make a huge difference in sleep quality.”

We tested the Nolah Evolution Luxury Firm, the middle of the mattress’s three firmness options. Our tester thought the mattress offered firm support with a soft top layer. Our tester only sank into the first layer when lying on the mattress, feeling a firm lift underneath

“I think this mattress does a good combination of lifting and also feeling supportive around pain areas. It could be a good option for those with some pain,” noted Jaimie Pearce.

Our tester—a side sleeper—praised the mattress’s combination of firmness and cushioning top layer as excellent for side sleepers and sleepers with pain. The firm support from the spring coils and pressure-relieving top layer should help support sleepers with back pain.

The Nolah Evolution mattress features a dreamy blend of innerspring support and plush comfort layers that’s shortlist-worthy for sleepers with back pain. Our testing found that with advanced cooling technology and a choice of firmness levels, the mattress is also a good option for hot and side sleepers.

  • Individually wrapped coils and a variety of foams yield a supportive sleep experience with good pressure relief.
  • Buyer’s choice; multiple firmness options.
  • The mattress features enhanced cooling capabilities courtesy of the hybrid design, a cooling topper, ArcticTEX™ cover, AirFoamICE™.
  • The zoned support offers good spinal alignment.
  • A good option for hot sleepers and couples.

Why we like Nolah Evolution as the best luxury mattress for back pain

The Nolah Evolution mattress delivers a supportive innerspring with pressure relief that’s kind to sleepers who regularly deal with back pain. Incidentally, this is Nolah’s luxury model, so it’s the most expensive mattress on our list. However, high-end details like a plush Euro-top finish, three foam layers, and cooling technology may be worth it for some sleepers.

Our evaluation reveals that the Nolah Evolution is made with HDMax™ coils and AirFoam™. While both components do the heavy lifting to deliver targeted lumbar support, we found that they also help distribute your body weight and alleviate pressure and tension around your joints. Additionally, our testers noted that the individually wrapped coils help keep motion transfer nicely in check so your partner’s tossing and turning don’t keep you up at night.

“The mattress quality feels good,” states a product tester. “It does feel durable. The edges don’t have as much support, but it does have wrapped coils. The fact that it is 15″ speaks to the mattress’s durability, and I can tell it is a good quality mattress.”

The Nolah Evolution is also packed with a host of cooling features. It starts with innerspring coils that boost airflow and breathability and ends with a High Thermal Conductivity topper that draws heat away from your body.

On the basis of our evaluations, we found that this mattress excels in spinal alignment and promotes neutrality, making it a must-have for anyone with back pain. (3) However, the plush finish and choice of firmness levels make it a good option for most body types and sleep preferences.

What to consider

  • We love that it’s a luxury mattress, but the price point of $2,499 for a queen size makes this one of the most expensive mattresses on this list.
  • One of our testers noted that it doesn’t have very strong edge support.
  • At 15 inches and a whopping 115 lbs for a queen, this mattress may be a challenge to set up for some users.

“Cooling and movement isolation are two very important features when considering a mattress,” says Spector. “They are worth the extra costs if you can afford them. Sleeping hot and sleeping next to a partner that moves around a lot at night can sabotage your sleep.”

Our tester immediately noticed how high quality the Bear Elite Hybrid Luxury Firm looked and felt. The firm, durable edge didn’t sink when our tester sat on and lay near it to test edge support. Our tester said it’s difficult to roll off the mattress, which is great news for couples or sleepers who like to spread out and use the entire surface. The mattress also isolated movements well during our motion transfer testing, another excellent feature for couples.

“After testing other mattresses, I felt the least motion transfer from this model,” Jaimie Pearce, product tester, noted. “I could hardly feel my partner move at all […] I definitely wouldn’t wake up when my partner got into bed or if they moved around.”

The hybrid mattress offers firm, comfortable support for back and stomach sleepers, but it may be too firm for side sleepers, according to our tester. We recommend side sleepers choose the “Soft” comfort level for more cushioning in the shoulders and hips. Our tester was impressed with the Bear Elite Hybrid’s durability, support, and motion isolation, making this a top pick for couples.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is Bear’s most luxurious mattress. The hybrid design features a zoned coil support system with a plush finish that delivers support and pressure relief where you need it most. This mattress also features cooling technologies; buyers can choose from three firmness options.

  • The zoned coils and a plush top yield a supportive mattress with good pressure relief.
  • The mattress offers many features but may be considered pricey outside of sale events.
  • It provides superior cooling capabilities courtesy of the copper-infused memory foam and phase change material.
  • Buyer’s choice with multiple firmness options.
  • Good motion isolation and cooling properties make it a good option for couples.

Why we like Bear Mattress Elite Hybrid as the best luxury mattress for couples

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a hybrid mattress that strikes a nice balance between support and pressure relief.

This mattress features a zoned coil system (high gauge coils are concentrated in the center of the bed) that boosts support where you need it most. Moreover, the coils are individually wrapped, so they move separately, which helps motion isolation. Great news, therefore, for those with restless bed partners—our testing shows you’re less likely to be disturbed by any tossing and turning.

Another plus for couples is the Elite Hybrid’s excellent edge support. With coils along the perimeter of the mattress, our testers noticed a nice increase in the usable surface area of their mattress. One of our testers noted that the mattress felt pretty firm and seemed very durable, but that the foam felt thinner than other mattresses we tested.

Our testers also appreciate the Elite Hybrid’s host of cooling features, which start at the base with coils that promote airflow and breathability. The Elite Hybrid has a cool-to-the-touch cover and copper-infused memory foam with Phase Change Material, or PCM, that absorbs and dissipates your body heat to keep you cool throughout the night. What to consider

  • Despite being a luxury mattress, it’s important to note that the Bear Elite Hybrid costs $2,304 for a queen before any discounts or sales. This amount can change if you add the celliant-infused cover.
  • One of our testers noted that the foam felt thinner than other mattresses, which may provide discomfort for some users.
  • We didn’t appreciate that the mattress doesn’t offer white-glove service to help you set it up at home. At 110lbs, this may make it difficult for some users, like those with any mobility issues, to handle moving it into the house.

Spector emphasizes how important cooling features are. “Turning the air conditioning down will only help so much if your mattress is retaining heat,” he says. “Having multiple strategies for dissipating heat can be an advantage and particularly valuable for people who already know they tend to be warm at night.”

Our tester noted the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite’s high-quality, breathable construction with multiple foam and spring layers. “The materials used in this mattress feel super heavy duty […] I feel like this mattress could last 15–20 years,” said Josh Himes.

Our tester also felt nice pressure relief from the cooling mattress. His shoulders and hips sank comfortably into the mattress while staying supported, and they’d recommend this mattress for most sleeping positions.

“I was really impressed by the pain relief and contouring on this bed. This is something Brooklyn Bedding calls out on their website, but experiencing it firsthand I was quite impressed. I think this bed could be good for all sleeping positions as it allows pressure relief on your hips and shoulders as a side sleeper but also supports your hips and lower back as a stomach or back sleeper,” Himes notes.

The Sedona Elite’s breathable design, cooling features, and pressure-relieving surface make it a comfortable mattress for those who prioritize cool, supportive sleep.

The Sedona Elite by Brooklyn Bedding features a dual coil construction that delivers excellent lumbar support and pressure relief. It’s packed with cooling technology, including copper-infused memory foam and a GlacioTex+ cooling cover, making it a fantastic luxury option for couples and hot sleepers.

  • The mattress features a double-coiled construction that delivers zoned support while cradling pressure points.
  • The cooling features include copper-infused memory foam, a GlacioTex+ cooling cover, and coil construction.
  • It delivers good edge support and excellent motion isolation.
  • The mattress is finished by hand.

Why we like the Sedona Elite as the best cooling luxury mattress

Staying cool during the overnight hours is key to a good night’s sleep, so hot sleepers will appreciate all the cooling features packed into the Sedona Elite. (4

This hybrid mattress features a double coil construction with a medium-firm feel that offers side and back sleepers a nice balance of zoned support and contouring for pressure relief. Our testers found that the hyper-dense transition foam adds to the mattress’s comfort as it softens the feel of the coils.

Support and pressure relief are great, but the standout feature of the Sedona Elite is its cooling technology. While the coil components boost airflow and breathability, our evaluation revealed that the top layers do some pretty heavy lifting to keep you cool during the overnight hours.

Pulling back the covers here, you’ll find a copper-infused memory foam and a GlacioTex+ Cooling Cover, both of which drew away and dissipated heat in our testing, which helps you sleep cooler.

While edge support and a cooler sleep might make the Sedona Elite attractive to couples, we discovered that light sleepers may also find what they’re looking for here. Our testers also praise the mattress’s motion isolation, with one tester saying they felt almost nothing when their testing partner moved next to them on the mattress

Unlike other mattresses on our list, the Sedona Elite has the distinction of being the only one that’s completed by hand. The steel coils are made in-house, and each mattress exits the factory with a hand-sewn finish.

What to consider

  • For a bed-in-a-box, we found this mattress to be a bit expensive, at $2,399 for a queen before any discounts or sales.
  • While the mattress offers side and back sleepers a nice balance of zoned support and contouring for pressure relief, it may not provide enough relief for stomach sleepers.
  • Like other mattresses on this list, the Brooklyn Bedding Sedona Elite does not offer white-glove service, which may make it a challenge for some users to set up in their home.

How we test the best luxury mattresses

Every Fortune Recommends ™ mattress review is guided by an experienced team of certified sleep science coaches, industry experts, and real-world consumers. We aim to analyze every mattress we discuss through a variety of physical tests. We evaluate factors like edge support, sinkage, motion isolation, and pressure relief to arrive at a comprehensive assessment. When physical testing insights are not available, we rely on thorough research performed by writers and editors with years of experience in sleep content.

Our proprietary testing methodology ensures each mattress undergoes the same meticulous evaluation so we can provide objective and trustworthy feedback that’s grounded in genuine user experiences. Read our full mattress testing methodology for more information.

Sleep experience – 40%

A high-quality mattress should feel like it’s designed to provide you with the best sleep of your life. It should also deliver on that promise. Our mattress testers assess various factors to reflect the functional aspects of the mattress as well as the user’s sleep experience.

Here’s what we test:

  • Temperature regulation
  • Motion isolation
  • Back pressure relief
  • Side pressure relief
Support – 30%

Alongside the sleep experience, comfort and support are just as important for a healthy and restful sleep. A high-quality mattress should assist in providing relief from aches and pains. It should also offer firm edge support, which is especially important for those who need extra stability when getting out of bed or slipping on their shoes.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Edge sinkage
  • Center sinkage
Customer experience – 15%

Sometimes, the mattress can be great, but if the overall shopping experience wasn’t, that could easily put a sour taste in a user’s mouth. We analyze the purchasing process from start to finish, including what options are available when something goes wrong.

We scrutinize each mattress on the following:

  • Warranty
  • Sleep trial
  • Delivery time
  • Customer service
  • Mattress weight
Health & safety – 10%

A mattress is more than just a sleeping surface—it’s an environment where you spend a significant portion of your life. We assess critical aspects of mattresses that may directly impact your well-being and peace of mind.

Our factors in this rating include:

  • Hypoallergenic materials
  • Safety certifications
  • Brand reputation
Cost – 5%

Assessing value involves an examination of several key factors that contribute to a mattress’s worth, with price at the forefront. A mattress that’s priced just within reach of its target audience yet surpasses competitors in terms of materials, performance, and support presents a compelling value proposition. The availability of frequent discounts is also factored into our cost assessment.

Bonus points

When a mattress goes above and beyond the factors listed above, we award it with extra points to signify its special status. These features aren’t necessary to create a comfortable, supportive mattress, but they do provide additional value.

Bonus points are added for the following considerations:

  • Customization
  • Accessory inclusion
  • Technology
  • Weight supported

What is considered a luxury mattress?

Categorizing a mattress as “luxury” doesn’t rely solely on the price tag. However, that remains a significant factor, recognizing most luxury options cost considerably more than standard mattresses. Considering the features that drive up the price tag, luxury options often prove their worth with all they have to offer.

These mattresses boast advanced construction with high-quality materials to offer superior comfort and support. They’re often stacked with multiple layers of premium foams, natural and organic materials, and high-grade coils. The higher-end materials also contribute to longer-lasting durability, so the mattress maintains its comfort and support for years.

The luxury experience also often goes beyond the mattress itself, with brands including advanced services that can help improve the value of your purchase. We typically see generous sleep trials and extended, comprehensive warranties. While many offer free shipping, some companies also throw in complementary in-home set-up and offer to remove your old mattress while they’re there.

Pros and cons of luxury mattresses

Just because a mattress is labeled as a “luxury” product doesn’t mean it’s flawless. There will always be unique benefits and drawbacks that you should consider before purchasing.

Pros

  • Higher-quality: These mattresses’ top-notch materials—high-density foam, latex, and reinforced steel coils—provide exceptional comfort and support.
  • Lasting durability: The high-grade materials are often more durable and resistant to sagging, increasing the mattress’s lifespan.
  • Enhanced features: These mattresses often go beyond the basics by offering plush pillowtop covers, advanced cooling technologies, and enhanced lumbar support.
  • Exceptional customer service: Many luxury mattress brands pride themselves on offering outstanding customer service from order to delivery, with many offering generous trial periods, extended warranties, and complimentary in-home setup and mattress removal services.

Cons

  • Expensive: It’s no surprise that higher-end mattresses come with higher price tags. Higher-quality materials and enhanced features cost more.
  • Bulky: These mattresses are typically made with more materials and higher-quality materials that can be denser. Overall, you end up with a thicker, heavier mattress that can be hard to set up, rotate, or move around.
  • Overly specific or complicated: You could end up paying more for a mattress that offers distinct features that you don’t need or don’t fit your sleep preferences. The wide array of features and choices may also become confusing and complicate the buying process.

Other luxury mattresses we tried

We’ve tested over 60 mattresses, assessing each one on factors like materials and construction, performance, support, and comfort. Unfortunately, not every mattress is suitable for our list.

  • Aurora Luxe Cooling: We did not select the Aurora Luxe Cooling for our Best Luxury Mattresses list due to concerns about durability and edge support. Although it provides excellent motion isolation and a cooling feel ideal for couples, the soft edges, and moderate sinkage may make it challenging for those needing reliable edge support and ease of movement.
  • WinkBed Lux Firm: While it offers solid edge support, comfort across sleeping positions, and minimal motion transfer, it may lack adequate lumbar support for those with back pain. Additionally, the firm, responsive feel might not provide enough contour for very light side sleepers who need more pressure relief.
  • Titan Plus Luxe: We didn’t choose the Titan Plus Luxe for our Best Luxury Mattresses list because, despite its supportive feel and minimal motion transfer, it didn’t match the durability and edge support we saw in other top contenders. The bounciness and slight edge sinkage raised concerns about potential sagging and long-term performance.

FAQs

What mattresses do luxury hotels use?

Our research reveals that no one brand is used across the tourism industry. According to TripAdvisor, travelers will likely find a different mattress in every hotel chain they visit. (7) Moreover, travelers may also find that some hotels use their own proprietary mattresses across their locations.

W Hotels uses their own W Pillow Top Mattress. Similarly, The Four Seasons uses their Four Seasons at Home Signature Mattress, and The Marriott uses their own Innerspring bed.

To learn more, check out our complete best hotel mattresses roundup. If you’re interested in recreating your sleep experience at a particular hotel, your best bet is to ask which bed they use.

How much should a luxury mattress cost?

Luxury mattresses vary widely in price. According to our research, the best luxury mattresses on this list range from $1,799 to $2,495. Ultimately, it’s up to the buyer to determine what they’re willing to pay for and what their budget will allow.

What is the most expensive mattress you can buy?

While rapper Drake made headlines last year with his $400,000 Swedish-made mattress, which dropped jaws everywhere, you might be surprised to know that it’s not the most expensive mattress out there. With a $1.6M price tag, Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars crafted the most expensive bed in the world with an artsy floating bed that allows you to sleep in midair. (8)

Are high-end mattresses worth it?

A high-quality mattress is imperative for a good night’s rest, and many luxury mattresses excel at providing an optimal sleep experience. These mattresses also contain more high-quality materials that improve durability for long-lasting support and comfort. So, while you’ll pay more upfront, you may end saving money in the long run.
